The UK’s struggles are faced across the whole of the EU: according to the Commissionbetween 2005 and 2011 EU manufacturing saw the highest increase in energy costs relativeto the US, China and Japan. 15 According to Commission President Barroso, between 2005and 2012 the gas price for European industry increased by 35 per cent and the electricityprice increased by 38 per cent.
