PREFACEINTRODUCTION“Nilgiris” the name is Sanskrit means BLUE MOUNTAINS and in TamilNEELAMALAI. The Nilgiris District is situated in the Western Ghats. It is surrounded bythe Coimbatore District, Kerala State and Karnataka State on the eastern, western and thenorthern side respectively. The Nilgiris District is a celebrated summer resort for thetourists from all of India. Udhagamandalam popularly called, as Ooty is the Queen of HillStations in India. Udhagamandalam the capital of the Nilgiris District has one been thevenue of TamilNadu Legislative Assembly. The economic activities of this district isaccelerated by the visit of tourists to a considerable extend which increase the incomecapacity of the people engaged many fields.GEOGRAPHICAL AREA AND LOCATIONThe geographical area of the District is 2,543 square kilometers, consists ofsix taluks namely Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Gudalur, Kundah and Pandalur.The up plateau at an altitude of 6,500 feet consists of three Taluks namelyUdhagamandalam, Coonoor and Kotagiri while Gudalur Taluk is the oldest plateau at analtitude of 3,000 feet. There are four Panchayat Unions in this District. The fourMunicipalities are Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Gudalur and Nelliyalam. There are 11special village panchayats in this district. Wellington is the only Contonement in thisDistrict.POPULATIONThe population of the district according to 2001 Census is 7,62,141 of which3,78,351 males and 3,83,790 females. The increase in population over 1991 census 7.31% Density varies from place to place. The density of population in this district is 300 persquare kilometers. The expected population in 2011 is 8,23,637. The major town namelyUdhagamandalam, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Gudalur, Jegathala, Ketti has population 93,987,50,196, 43,038, 14,657 and 24,465 respectively as per 2001 census.1

ELEVATIONNatural forest wealth is the one of the main factors adding to the naturalbeauty and economic importance of this District. Forest area is 1,42,577 hectares. Thehighest elevation is the peak of Doddabetta, which lies at a height of 2,595 meters fromthe Mean Sea level. The towns of Kotagiri, Coonoor and Gudalur lie at a height of 1,983,1858 and 1,117 meters above mean sea level respectively.SEASONAL CONDITION AND RAINFALLThe general climatic condition in this district is cool. High elevation of thisdistrict result low temperature, which is further lowered by excessive moisture content ofthe atmosphere resulting from the exaltation by the vegetation. The mean minimumTemperature was 10.0 Celsius and the mean maximum was 29.8 Celsius during 2007-08.The total rainfall during 2008-2009 was 1872.4 mm.NATURE OF CROPSThe Gross area under cultivation is 77,520 Hectares. Tea, Coffee, Potato andvarious Vegetable crops including Cabbage, Cauliflower are raised in this District.Cardamom, Pepper and Ginger are the major spices. Due to increase in the cost ofcultivation of Potato and other root growers in the District have switched over to plantingTea in the recent years.2

SALIENT FEATURES OF THE DISTRICTThe Nilgiris Hill forms a part of the Western Ghats. The name Nilgiris wasdue to by the blue haze envelops the range with most distant hills of considerable size.Doddabetta, the highest peak in South India with an altitude of 2,595 Meters lies in thisDistrict. The other prominent hills of this District are Elk hills, Devarshola peak, Hulicalhill and Cairn hill. There are many waterfalls in this District. Almost between every pairof mountain runs a river or a stream. Important amount them are the Pykara streamsrising on the slopes of Mukkuruthi peak. The Segoor River has an origin near the slopesof Udhagamendalam. The Gathadahalla near Kotagiri and Coonoor is a tributary of riverBhavani. The important among the waterfalls are Kulacombai falls, St.Catherine’s falls,Upper and Lower Pykara falls, the Kateri falls, Kallaty and the laws falls.The main tourist attraction in this District is the Botanical Garden. Besidesthe Botanical Garden there are several other places. The important among them are theboat house near Bus-stand, the Rose Garden, the Deer Park, and the Doddabetta peak inUdhagamandalam. Sim’s park, Pasture Institute, Kateri falls, Lamb’s rock and Dolphin’snose are the Important Tourist sports in Coonoor. In Kotagiri block Kodanadu view pointand St. Catherine’s falls are the two main tourist attractions. In Gudalur block the maintourist attraction in Mudumalai wild Life Sanctuary.In this District, Tea is the main plantation crop. There are more than 200 TeaManufacturing Industries under both Private and Government undertakings. TheTANTEA in Gudalur block and UPASI in Coonoor block are the main Governmentundertakings. The Central Government establishments namely, Hindustan Photo Filmsand Cordite Factory in Aruvankadu are found in this District.3
