A c<strong>and</strong>idate’s diaconal <strong>for</strong>mation can be aunique <strong>and</strong> challenging situation <strong>and</strong> opportunity <strong>for</strong> his wife. Sheshould be involved in <strong>the</strong> program in appropriate ways, remembering,however, that it is <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong> who is responding to a call to <strong>the</strong>diaconate. The Church has determined that a married man cannotbe considered <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> diaconate without <strong>the</strong> consent <strong>of</strong> his wife. 49After ordination, a deacon’s wife needs to “be duly in<strong>for</strong>med <strong>of</strong> [her]husb<strong>and</strong>’s activities in order to arrive at a harmonious balancebetween family, pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> ecclesial responsibilities.” 50139. The participation <strong>of</strong> a wife in her husb<strong>and</strong>’s <strong>for</strong>mation programstreng<strong>the</strong>ns an awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong>’s diaconal vocation<strong>and</strong> helps <strong>the</strong> wife to accept <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>and</strong> changes that willtake place, should her husb<strong>and</strong> be ordained. It also provides anopportunity <strong>for</strong> those responsible <strong>for</strong> diaconal <strong>for</strong>mation to assesswhe<strong>the</strong>r she has “<strong>the</strong> Christian moral character <strong>and</strong> attributeswhich will nei<strong>the</strong>r hinder [her] husb<strong>and</strong>’s ministry nor be out <strong>of</strong>keeping with it.” 51 To help <strong>the</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idate’s wife to give an in<strong>for</strong>medconsent to her husb<strong>and</strong>’s request <strong>for</strong> ordination, it is necessary toinclude specific resources <strong>and</strong> programming addressed to her. Whenworkshops <strong>and</strong> spiritual exercises <strong>for</strong> wives are planned, wivesshould be consulted to ascertain <strong>the</strong>ir questions <strong>and</strong> concerns.While every ef<strong>for</strong>t ought to be made to provide scheduling <strong>and</strong>material assistance to make wives’ participation possible, care mustsimultaneously be taken to keep clear <strong>the</strong> essential distinctionbetween ordained <strong>and</strong> familial life <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> clear independence <strong>of</strong>diaconal ministry. 52140. Children <strong>of</strong> participants also need to be included in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mationprocess in “appropriate ways.” 53 This will depend, amongo<strong>the</strong>r considerations, on <strong>the</strong>ir ages, circumstances, <strong>and</strong> interests.These occasions provide opportunities <strong>for</strong> parents <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir childrento support <strong>and</strong> assist each o<strong>the</strong>r in keeping communication open<strong>and</strong> expectations clear. Younger children <strong>and</strong> teens especially needto be encouraged to express <strong>the</strong>ir concerns about <strong>the</strong> public role <strong>of</strong>this ministry <strong>and</strong> how it affects <strong>the</strong>ir lives both within <strong>the</strong> family <strong>and</strong>among <strong>the</strong>ir peers. They need to express honestly <strong>the</strong>ir concernsover <strong>the</strong> commitment <strong>of</strong> time <strong>and</strong> energy by <strong>the</strong>ir parents <strong>and</strong> whatthis means to <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>and</strong> to each member.
