There are three separate but integral paths that constitute aunified diocesan <strong>for</strong>mation program <strong>for</strong> deacons: aspirant, c<strong>and</strong>idate,<strong>and</strong> post-ordination. Although this <strong>Directory</strong> addresses eachpath separately, <strong>the</strong>y never<strong>the</strong>less become “one sole organic journey”in diaconal <strong>for</strong>mation. 1 In each path, <strong>the</strong> four dimensions orspecific areas in <strong>for</strong>mation—human, spiritual, intellectual, <strong>and</strong> pastoral—arealways essential. 2Separate paths: A unified<strong>for</strong>mation programII. Dimensions in <strong>Formation</strong>105. One who will serve as a deacon requires a <strong>for</strong>mation that promotes<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole person. There<strong>for</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> fourdimensions in <strong>for</strong>mation should be so interrelated as to achieve acontinual integration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir objectives in <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> each participant<strong>and</strong> in his exercise <strong>of</strong> ministry.Human Dimension106. A participant comes to <strong>for</strong>mation with a history <strong>of</strong> interrelationshipswith o<strong>the</strong>r people. <strong>Formation</strong> <strong>for</strong> ministry begins withhuman <strong>for</strong>mation <strong>and</strong> development. Participants “should <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>ecultivate a series <strong>of</strong> human qualities, not only out <strong>of</strong> proper <strong>and</strong> duegrowth <strong>and</strong> realization <strong>of</strong> self, but also with a view to <strong>the</strong> ministry.” 3Four dimensions inministerial <strong>for</strong>mationGrowth inself-<strong>for</strong>mationOBJECTIVES107. Deacons have an important role in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> human development<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> justice. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir close living<strong>and</strong> working situations in society, <strong>the</strong>y can well underst<strong>and</strong>, interpret,<strong>and</strong> try to bring solutions to personal <strong>and</strong> social problems in<strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel. There<strong>for</strong>e, deacons need to be close to <strong>the</strong>people, helping <strong>the</strong>m to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> realities <strong>of</strong> social life so <strong>the</strong>ycan try to improve it.
