A number of practical concerns have emerged regarding diaconalministry. Because of the diverse responses that exist throughoutthe United States, the United States Conference of CatholicBishops has published the following particular law to provide a moreharmonious approach.Age for Ordination87. In accord with Canon Law, the United States Conference ofCatholic Bishops establishes the minimum age for ordination to thepermanent diaconate at thirty-five for all candidates, married orcelibate. The establishment of a maximum age for ordination is atthe discretion of the diocesan bishop, keeping in mind the particularneeds and expectations of the diocese regarding diaconal ministryand life.Clerical Title88. While various forms of address have emerged with regard todeacons, the Congregation for the Clergy has determined that in allforms of address for permanent deacons, the appropriate title is“Deacon.” 95Clerical Attire89. The Code of Canon Law does not oblige permanent deaconsto wear an ecclesiastical garb. 96 Further, because they are prominentand active in secular professions and society, the United StatesConference of Catholic Bishops specifies that permanent deaconsshould resemble the lay faithful in dress and matters of lifestyle.Each diocesan bishop should, however, determine and promulgateany exceptions to this law, as well as specify the appropriate clericalattire if it is to be worn. 97Liturgy of the Hours90. Permanent deacons are required to include as part of theirdaily prayer those parts of the Liturgy of the Hours known as Morningand Evening Prayer. Permanent deacons are obliged to pray for theuniversal Church. Whenever possible, they should lead these prayerswith the community to whom they have been assigned to minister.
