40Chapter 2VI. United States Conference <strong>of</strong> Catholic Bishops:Particular Law Governing Deacons in <strong>the</strong> United StatesParticular law86. A number <strong>of</strong> practical concerns have emerged regarding diaconalministry. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diverse responses that exist throughout<strong>the</strong> United States, <strong>the</strong> United States Conference <strong>of</strong> CatholicBishops has published <strong>the</strong> following particular law to provide a moreharmonious approach.Age <strong>for</strong> Ordination87. In accord with Canon Law, <strong>the</strong> United States Conference <strong>of</strong>Catholic Bishops establishes <strong>the</strong> minimum age <strong>for</strong> ordination to <strong>the</strong>permanent diaconate at thirty-five <strong>for</strong> all c<strong>and</strong>idates, married orcelibate. The establishment <strong>of</strong> a maximum age <strong>for</strong> ordination is at<strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diocesan bishop, keeping in mind <strong>the</strong> particularneeds <strong>and</strong> expectations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diocese regarding diaconal ministry<strong>and</strong> life.Clerical Title88. While various <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>of</strong> address have emerged with regard todeacons, <strong>the</strong> Congregation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clergy has determined that in all<strong>for</strong>ms <strong>of</strong> address <strong>for</strong> permanent deacons, <strong>the</strong> appropriate title is“Deacon.” 95Clerical Attire89. The Code <strong>of</strong> Canon Law does not oblige permanent deaconsto wear an ecclesiastical garb. 96 Fur<strong>the</strong>r, because <strong>the</strong>y are prominent<strong>and</strong> active in secular pr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>and</strong> society, <strong>the</strong> United StatesConference <strong>of</strong> Catholic Bishops specifies that permanent deaconsshould resemble <strong>the</strong> lay faithful in dress <strong>and</strong> matters <strong>of</strong> lifestyle.Each diocesan bishop should, however, determine <strong>and</strong> promulgateany exceptions to this law, as well as specify <strong>the</strong> appropriate clericalattire if it is to be worn. 97Liturgy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hours90. <strong>Permanent</strong> deacons are required to include as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irdaily prayer those parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Liturgy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hours known as Morning<strong>and</strong> Evening Prayer. <strong>Permanent</strong> deacons are obliged to pray <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>universal Church. Whenever possible, <strong>the</strong>y should lead <strong>the</strong>se prayerswith <strong>the</strong> community to whom <strong>the</strong>y have been assigned to minister.
