Organization, Structure, <strong>and</strong> Personnel <strong>for</strong> Diaconal <strong>Formation</strong>135appropriate links to o<strong>the</strong>r diocesan entities to ensure a collaborative<strong>and</strong> integrative approach to <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> deacons<strong>and</strong> diaconal ministry throughout <strong>the</strong> diocese.NORMS1. The diocesan bishop is <strong>the</strong> one ultimately responsible <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>discernment <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> aspirants <strong>and</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates, as wellas <strong>the</strong> pastoral care <strong>of</strong> deacons. He exercises his responsibilitypersonally, as well as through his director <strong>of</strong> diaconal <strong>for</strong>mation<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> deacon personnel whom he has appointed<strong>and</strong> who are responsible directly to him or, in his absence, to apriest whom he has appointed as his delegate. (267)2. The director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation, who must be ei<strong>the</strong>r a priest or a deacon,is appointed by <strong>the</strong> diocesan bishop to be head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diaconate<strong>of</strong>fice. He is directly responsible to <strong>the</strong> bishop. (272)3. The bishop may set up a <strong>for</strong>mation policy board to assist him <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation in matters <strong>of</strong> diaconal <strong>for</strong>mation. (283)4. The director <strong>of</strong> spiritual <strong>for</strong>mation, who must be a priest, isnominated by <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation. He is approved <strong>and</strong>appointed by <strong>the</strong> bishop. He personally oversees <strong>the</strong> spiritual<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> each participant <strong>and</strong> provides an orientation too<strong>the</strong>r spiritual directors, who must also be priests <strong>and</strong> who maybe chosen by <strong>the</strong> aspirants or c<strong>and</strong>idates with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> bishop. (274)5. The coordinator <strong>for</strong> pastoral <strong>for</strong>mation, who corresponds to“<strong>the</strong> pastor (or o<strong>the</strong>r minister)” required by <strong>the</strong> Basic Norms <strong>for</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Formation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Permanent</strong> Deacons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congregation <strong>for</strong>Catholic Education, is nominated by <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation. 25He is approved <strong>and</strong> appointed by <strong>the</strong> bishop. (276)6. Faculty members are nominated by <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n approved <strong>and</strong> appointed by <strong>the</strong> bishop. (278)7. Mentors <strong>for</strong> aspirants <strong>and</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates, who are to be knowledgeable<strong>and</strong> competent to assist <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation, are nominatedfrom among priests <strong>and</strong> deacons by <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation.They also are approved <strong>and</strong> appointed by <strong>the</strong> bishop.Mentors are charged with closely following <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong>those committed to <strong>the</strong>ir care, <strong>of</strong>fering support <strong>and</strong> encouragement.(281)
