In consultationwith the director of formation and others responsible forformation, he arranges for the pastoral field placement of each participant,including an orientation and training of those who assisthim in the field placement. Supervisory skills cannot be presumed,and teaching them is a high priority. Good supervision guaranteesthat the pastoral field experience remains systematically educativeand formational. The coordinator for pastoral field formation alsoprovides a written assessment of the participant’s pastoral field educationexperience. The coordinator for pastoral field formation hasfaculty status, thereby ensuring that all pastoral field experiences arecarefully coordinated with the other dimensions in formation.276. It is important that the coordinator for pastoral field formationhave parish experience, be familiar with pastoral education, be the coordinator forQualifications ofknowledgeable in theology and supervisory techniques, be familiar pastoral formationwith the value and practice of theological reflection—its goals,objectives, and methods. He should possess formal training in supervisionand counseling. Since the pastoral service of the diocesanChurch extends to all individuals and groups, including all socialclasses, with special concern for the poor and those alienated fromsociety, the coordinator for pastoral field formation also should haveknowledge of the needs and resources within the diocesan Churchand be familiar with deacon placements within the diocese and theireffectiveness in the local Church.FacultySELECTION277. Faculty members are nominated by the director of formation Vatican directivesand approved and appointed by the bishop. The faculty contributes for educatorsin a significant way to the formation of future deacons. The qualityand expertise of the faculty determine the qualities and abilities ofthe future deacon. The Congregation for Catholic Education hasformulated, in its Directives Concerning the Preparation of SeminaryEducators, specific criteria to guide the selection of faculty that applyto the selection of diaconal faculty members as well. 15 The criteriaestablished by the Congregation are highlighted in the notes of thischapter. 16
