The aspirant’s spiritual director is critical to <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mationprocess. This priest, who is to be approved by <strong>the</strong> bishop, must bewell trained <strong>and</strong> knowledgeable about <strong>the</strong> diaconate. The spiritualdirector accompanies, supports, <strong>and</strong> challenges <strong>the</strong> aspirant in hisongoing conversion. The spiritual director assists <strong>the</strong> aspirant in hisrelationship with God <strong>and</strong> his underst<strong>and</strong>ing that it is Christ who“calls,” <strong>the</strong> Church that affirms his diaconal vocation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishopwho responds to that affirmation by <strong>the</strong> imposition <strong>of</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s.195. As collaborators in discerning <strong>the</strong> readiness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aspirant tomove into c<strong>and</strong>idate <strong>for</strong>mation, <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>and</strong> its pastor also shouldaccompany <strong>the</strong> aspirant <strong>and</strong> his family through <strong>the</strong>ir prayers, support,<strong>and</strong> presence. In <strong>the</strong> aspirant path in <strong>for</strong>mation, <strong>the</strong> parish is <strong>the</strong> primaryplace to observe <strong>the</strong> aspirant’s relational skills <strong>and</strong> his practicein pastoral service. The pastor, <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e, is to provide an assessment<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aspirant <strong>and</strong> his family. This assessment will fur<strong>the</strong>r enable <strong>the</strong><strong>for</strong>mation staff to support <strong>and</strong> challenge <strong>the</strong> aspirant’s discernment <strong>of</strong>his readiness to move into c<strong>and</strong>idate <strong>for</strong>mation.Intellectual Dimension196. The objectives <strong>and</strong> content <strong>for</strong> intellectual <strong>for</strong>mation at <strong>the</strong>aspirant level should communicate a deeper knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith<strong>and</strong> church tradition than <strong>the</strong> aspirant has already attained. Itwould be appropriate to promote an in-depth <strong>and</strong> systematic study<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catechism <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church, <strong>and</strong> to introduce <strong>the</strong> traditions<strong>of</strong> Catholic philosophy, spirituality, <strong>and</strong> doctrine, especially <strong>the</strong>
