Corporate Development 

UJF’s Corporate Sponsorship program provides San Diego-based businesses the opportunity to 

partner with a prominent Jewish community organization that offers vital aid locally, and to the 

global Jewish community. This new program exemplifies the way in which the corporate world 

and the nonprofit world can come together for the benefit of all. 

This innovative program is designed to underwrite operating costs, thereby making more 

Annual Campaign dollars available for critically needed programs and services. In 2007, UJF’s 

Corporate Sponsorship program generated over $224,000 in revenue, providing our sponsors 

exposure to the Jewish and secular community at numerous events and on our website 

throughout the year. 

The business community is an integral part of the Jewish communal network supported by the 

United Jewish Federation of San Diego County. The Federation thanks its corporate partners

This past year tested the resilience and spirit of the Jewish people worldwide with the tragic war in Israel during the 

summer of 2006. We watched with horror at the devastation wrought on northern Israel, as well as in our partnership 

community, Sha’ar Hanegev, located in the north-western Negev, adjacent to Gaza. Our reaction was swift and our 

spirits were raised to new heights by the incredible response of our local community, as thousands of us stood with 

Israel and raised over $4.8 million during the first few months of the war for the Israel Emergency Campaign (IEC), 

led by Claire Ellman and Andrew Viterbi. 

Many members of our Jewish community had the distinct pleasure of personally visiting Israel and Sha’ar Hanegev to 

see first hand where and how our IEC dollars have been spent. Because of our Federation’s existing infrastructure, we 

were able to respond immediately as a community, and 100% of the funds raised were used for those most impacted. 

Thanks to you and the Federation, thousands of children and elderly were kept out of harms way during the war, 

critical emergency services were and continue to be provided, and construction is under way in an effort to rebuild the 

devastated communities and make them safer places to live and work. 

Federation also takes its responsibility for our local community very seriously and we continue to work collaboratively 

with our community’s agencies and day schools to provide ongoing support, helping them to grow and flourish. 

Additionally, we work very closely with our area synagogues providing educational workshops to enhance their 

recruitment, engagement and retention efforts. UJF was honored to have been selected this year by the Union of 

Reform Judaism as the inaugural recipient of their National Shutafim (Partners) Award, recognizing our Federation as 

having the best synagogue relations amongst all communities our size. 

In April 2007, the UJF Board unanimously approved the recommendations of the Governance Task Force, chaired by 

Murray Galinson. The new Board consists of 24 members and is focused on ensuring our Federation is meeting the 

changing needs of our community, Israel and the Jewish people worldwide. 

Of course, all of these activities would not be possible without your generous support, and our Federation’s focus on 

Total Jewish Giving. Hundreds of volunteers showed their interest in UJF this year by helping with Super Sunday and 

thousands participated in the General Campaign, Women’s Division, Young Adult Division (YAD) and the Major Gifts 

events, as well through many supplemental giving programs; we thank each of you for your time and interest. UJF is 

appreciative of your efforts and looks forward to working with you in the months and years to come.

San Diego is currently the 13th largest Jewish 

community in the nation and UJF, together with 

its family of beneficiary and affiliated agencies, 

offers a myriad of programs and services for the 

Jewish community in San Diego.

UJF’s Connection to San Diego 

2007 marked UJF’s 70th year in San Diego. When UJF 

was founded in 1937, San Diego had an estimated 

2,000 Jews. In the years that followed, the Jewish 

community grew steadily to nearly 40,000 in just 40 

years. Today, as it celebrates its 70th year of service 

in San Diego, the Jewish population has skyrocketed 

to more than 90,000. San Diego is currently the 

13th largest Jewish community in the nation and UJF, 

together with its family of beneficiary and affiliated 

agencies, offers a myriad of programs and services for 

the Jewish community in San Diego. 

This year, UJF launched the Jewish Leadership Institute 

(JLI), a program designed to strengthen San Diego’s 

volunteer and professional leaders. Over 75 participants 

attended the four-session workshop exploring topics on: 

What is a Leader?; Jewish Ethics and Leadership Skills; 

and Leadership Impact. 

Over 50 leaders from 13 synagogues participated 

in the inaugural UJF–Synagogue Leadership 

Workshop. The theme, “Membership Has Its 

Privileges,”focused on synagogue recruitment, 

integration and retention. Attendees had the 

unique opportunity to network, brainstorm ideas; 

share best practices and explore areas of common 

concern. UJF awarded close to $90,000 in need-based 

scholarships to San Diego youth for Jewish summer 

camp and travel to Israel—providing 130 young people 

the opportunity to participate in these life-changing 

Jewish experiences. Additionally, in partnership with 

Camp Mountain Chai, the UJF Israel Center provided 

two-week camp scholarships for several children from 

our sister community, Sha’ar Hanegev. 

UJF worked closely with the Jewish Senior Services 

Council (JSSC) and its member agencies (Jewish Family 

Service, Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, 

Jewish Community Foundation and the Lawrence Family 

JCC) to establish a viable infrastructure to implement the 

“On The Go” Senior Transportation Program. 

In April 2007, the leadership of UJF unanimously 

approved the recommendations of the Governance Task 

Force to restructure the board by selecting 24 members 

to succeed the existing 82-member board. The new board 

aims to restructure, refocus and recommit UJF to the 

community, while making efficiency and effectiveness 

key components of the governing process.

UJF’s connection to Israel 

As part of its commitment to Jewish people throughout 

the world, United Jewish Federation of San Diego County, 

in partnership with the North American federation 

movement, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American 

Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the people 

of Israel, have developed special relationships with 

Jewish communities worldwide. These relationships 

are cultivated through special projects, exchanges and 

missions that bring Jewish San Diegans together with 

Jews in communities throughout the world, creating a 

global Jewish safety net and furthering our community’s 

commitment to Jewish peoplehood and tikkun olam. 

Through a multi-dimensional approach to outreach, 

programming and Israel travel, UJF works to strengthen 

the connection between Israel and the San Diego 

Jewish community. Federation initiatives in the social, 

educational, economic and political arenas promote a 

shared Jewish identity among Israelis and San Diegans, 

creating a strong bond between the two communities.

Sha’ar Hanegev 

In 1998, UJF formed a partnership with the Ibim Student 

Village (a youth village/absorption center that welcomes 

young immigrants from other countries who are arriving 

before their parents and/or families, and prepares them 

to become Israeli citizens) and the Sha’ar Hanegev 

Regional Council, located in the north-western Negev. 

The Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council (Hebrew translation 

meaning Gate of the Negev Regional Council), is 

responsible for over 45,000 acres of land, containing ten 

kibbutzim, one moshav, one family farm, Ariel Sharon’s 

Shikmim, the Ibim Student Village and 6,000 residents. 

The goal of the partnership is to provide direct support to 

the state of Israel by strengthening the people-to-people 

and institutional connections between San Diego and 

Sha’ar Hanegev. 

Our Sha’ar Hanegev family lives a precarious existence. 

They live under the constant threat of Kassam missiles 

which strike the region on a daily basis causing injury 

to its people and property damage to homes and public 

buildings. Equal to the physical damage, the terror and 

fear among the residents of the region has disrupted 

“normal” everyday life. Additionally, as students and 

families fear for their safety, attendance begins to drop, 

which greatly threatens the future of the educational 

system, and the region itself. 

Christians United for Israel (CUFI) hosted its first local 

“Night to Honor Israel,” with UJF as the “honored guest” 

and nearly 1,000 people in attendance. Over $26,000 

was raised and designated for crucial improvements to 

the elementary school in Sha’ar Hanegev. UJF Board 

Chair Ken Polin personally presented the check to 

Sha’ar Hanegev’s mayor, Alon Schuster, during his visit 

to Israel in February. 

The UJF Israel Center, LLC, the 

Sha’ar Hanegev Committee, and the 

UJF Board unanimously agreed to 

direct $162,000 in IEC funds to the 

Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council for 

the following programs: 

Emergency Cultural Basket Enhancement: 

Provided critically needed social/cultural outings and 

experiences for families and seniors in the region. This 

gave temporary refuge to the residents during the war, 

and kept them out of harm’s way. 

Social Welfare & Trauma Enhancement: 

This division experienced a substantial increase in 

the number of individual and family clients due to the 

escalating crises. Increased resources were allocated to 

better serve the needs of the community during the crisis. 

Emergency Extracurricular Activities Support: 

After-school programs enabled students to continue their 

everyday activities despite the increasing threat of Kassam 

rockets. Additional funds helped to relocate the programs 

and continue to serve the children.

The Israel Emergency Campaign 

Israel Emergency Campaign (IEC) 

When Hezbollah militants began firing rockets from 

the Lebanese border on July 12, 2006, the Second 

Lebanon War began. News of the conflict struck 

a chord in San Diego, and the history of San Diego’s 

support for the state of Israel had a new chapter 

in the making. 

UJF, in collaboration with United Jewish Communities 

and the Federations of North America immediately 

launched an ad hoc fundraising drive known as the Israel 

Irvin Jacobs 


Emergency Campaign (IEC), chaired locally by 

Dr. Andrew Viterbi and Claire Ellman. The response was 

overwhelming—UJF San Diego alone raised over $4.8 

million in just over two months—a generous gift from one 

Jewish community to another, halfway around the world. 

Nationally, IEC has raised over $360 million to help Israel 

recover—and to support those still vulnerable in the 

North, in Sderot and the surrounding areas, including 

Sha’ar Hanegev. Here is how your generous support has 

helped rebuild and revitalize the affected areas: 

War Emergency – upgrading bomb shelters, moving 

children, the elderly and disabled out of harms way, and 

providing trauma and post-trauma counseling; 

Post-trauma Intervention – providing clinical intervention 

and counseling to families and people of all ages; 

Advocacy – supporting the UJC/JCPA Israel 

Advocacy Initiative; 

Education – emotional support for children to 

reestablish a normal routine; training school staff in 

dealing with trauma issues; providing special-needs 

children with care, upgrading kindergarten facilities, 

and providing after-school activities to keep children 

positively focused, incentive scholarships to boost 

enrollment in local colleges and universities; providing 

aid and supplies to needy families; helping Ethiopian 

students in vulnerable areas; 

Community Capacity – helping municipalities to better 

handle war emergencies, helping organizations better 

provide food to the poor in vulnerable areas, helping 

Ethiopian-Israelis in vulnerable areas; training young 

people as community leaders; fostering Arab-Jewish 

communications; creating youth villages where students 

mentor younger children, sending student volunteers 

to help beautify areas, helping train city leaders in 

emergency planning; increasing volunteerism; supporting 

NGO’s in vulnerable areas, supporting Magen David 

Adom and frontline hospitals. 

Economic opportunity – business loans for economic 

development and job creation in the North, small-business 

loans and grants, business development, mentorship and 

job training in Sderot and surrounding areas; 

Sderot Crises – providing incentive scholarships to 

boost enrollment at Sapir College, providing posttraumatic 

counseling and support; providing classroom 

facilities, sending children to summer camp in safer 

areas, providing the elderly and disabled with respites, 

providing business loans and aid;

UJF’s Connection to the Global Community 

American Jewish Joint 

Distribution Committee (JDC) 

Since 1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution 

Committee, Inc. (JDC) has served as the overseas arm of 

the American Jewish community. JDC serves the needs 

of Jews throughout the world, particularly where their 

lives as Jews are threatened or made more difficult. 

JDC sponsors programs of relief, rescue and renewal and 

helps Israel address its most urgent social challenges. 

They are committed to the idea that all Jews are 

responsible for one another. 

Rescue – Whenever and wherever a Jewish community 

is threatened, JDC offers rescue. In the early 1990s, JDC 

helped sustain the lives and secure the rescue of 15,000 

Ethiopian Jews. 

Relief – For Jewish communities in distress, JDC offers 

aid. For more than two decades, JDC has been providing 

food, clothing and medicine to some 250,000 elderly 

and impoverished Holocaust survivors in the former 

Soviet Union. 

Renewal – Since the fall of communist regimes in 

Europe, JDC has been helping Jewish communities 

rediscover their heritage and rebuild a vibrant Jewish 

communal life. 

Israel – JDC continues to provide assistance to the State 

of Israel as it addresses the social service needs of its 

most vulnerable communities: children-at-risk, struggling 

immigrant populations, the elderly and the disabled. 

Non-Sectarian Aid – In times of crisis – natural 

disasters, war, famine – JDC offers aid to non-Jews 

to fulfill the Jewish tenet of tikkun olam, the moral 

responsibility to repair the world and alleviate suffering 

wherever it exists. 

Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) 

JAFI connects the Federation community in a global 

partnership devoted to ensuring the future of the Jewish 

people. The Jewish Agency works in communities around 

the world with a dual purpose: 

Aliyah - For Israel to survive and flourish as a Jewish, 

democratic society, aliyah remains imperative. Israel 

must become home to more Jewish people. 

As the ‘first responder team’ of our global 

partnership, JAFI continuously monitors the situation 

of Jews around the world, ready to take immediate 

action whenever the safety of Jews or their ability to 

live Jewish lives is threatened. It must always maintain 

this readiness. But clearly, the center of gravity of aliyah 

today is moving from rescue operations to promoting 

and facilitating the immigration of those who choose to 

make Israel their home. Aliyah of choice is currently a 

primary focus of the Jewish Agency. 

Jewish/Zionist Education 

Across the board, our global Jewish family is in decline. We 

are losing more than 100 Jews every day. If we are counting 

on the next generation to lead us into the future, then we need 

to put Israel into their lives. 

As the need for Jewish education evolves, JAFI focuses on 

three major strategic objectives: dramatically increasing 

participation in transformative experiences in Israel; reaching 

out to communities as a full partner in developing compelling 

content and strategies for local engagement; and training and 

inspiring educators.
