Note: The 3fp and 2fp imperfect and 2fp imperative <strong>for</strong>ms are not attested; they<br />

are replaced by their corresponding mp <strong>for</strong>ms. (u instead of n ). Also note: If the<br />

imperfect or imperative <strong>for</strong>m ends in a vowel (2fs, 2mp, 3mp), the connecting<br />

vowel between the verb and the suffix is omitted.<br />

<strong>Rules</strong> <strong>for</strong> Verb Analysis (13)<br />

15. Identify the root letters in the <strong>for</strong>m--usually two or three<br />

will be present. Choose the third letter. See #11 above <strong>for</strong> a<br />

list of rules on how to determine the third root consonant.<br />

16. Determine the Pattern of the verb:<br />

A. If the verb (according to #13 above) is Perfect, the<br />

recognition points are the following:<br />

Qal--no prefixes, no dagš ses<br />

Niphal--N prefix<br />

Piel-Pual--dagš s <strong>for</strong>te in middle letter. (Look<br />

<strong>for</strong> the êu„ vowel in the Pual)<br />

Hiphil--נ prefix (נֵ [strong verbs], מכנ [pe waw].נן<br />

or נג [hollow], נְ [gutturals])<br />

Hophal--הלנו, (מֶנ [pe waw or hollow], נד [pe nun])<br />

Hithpael--ּנֵ<br />

B. If the verb (according to #13 above) is Imperfect, the<br />

recognition points are the following:<br />

Qal--הלִֵ (ִן, ֶּן, בן, ָן <strong>for</strong> Pe Yod; ִו etc. <strong>for</strong> Hollow)<br />

Niphal--הֶוִֵ (Niphal triangle). אחןבוִן with inital<br />

guttural<br />

Piel-Pual--טקֶ הִל (Note seăwיD under the prefix and<br />

dagšs <strong>for</strong>te in the middle letter)<br />

Hiphil--הלִֻ (מכִ Pe waw; ִן Pe yod, ִו Hollow)<br />

Hophal--הלִו (מִֶ <strong>for</strong> Hollow or Pe Yod; ִד <strong>for</strong> Pe<br />

Nun)<br />

Hithpael--ּלִֵ, etc.<br />
