Additional notes on The Willowbrook Study (optionalfor teacher to share):Hepatitis A is a mild inflammation of the liver that causes flu-likesymptoms; it can be contracted through contact with feces thatcontains the virus. Hepatitis B is a more severe form of the diseasethat also affects the liver; it is contracted through the exchange ofinfected body fluids. Approximately 50% of patients who haveHepatitis B are unable to overcome it and have what is calledchronic hepatitis. These people must monitor their medications sothey won’t develop liver failure, a potentially deadly condition.EXTENSIONAsk students to choose from the suggested list of cases involvingvulnerable populations in the Teacher Background section of thislesson, or have them research another case study online.SOURCESHenrietta Lacks and HeLa CellsBatts, D.W.
