Gunning Retires
"He sympathized with students and their problems,
he worked well with them and he was willing
to get involved with their activities. He was, and is,
their friend."
The students' friend is Richard J. "Joe" Gunning
who retired as dean of men at La Crosse State
University July 1. The remark attributed to Maurice
Graff, vice president for academic affairs, was one
of many made by friends and co-workers at a reception
held June 24 in his honor.
Gunning came to La Crosse in 1947 after 20 years
as teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in
Wisconsin public schools. He succeeded Clyde Smith
as dean of men.
While at La Crosse, Gunning was involved in the
planning and building of residence halls. He helped
organize Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity he
advises. He was a member of the student union
building committee and co-founder of the State
College Student Welfare Association of La Crosse,
which provides short-term, interest-free loans to
students.
Born in Friendship and graduated from Adams
Friendship High School, Gunning attended Stevens
Point State Teachers College and earned a master's
degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1943.
The local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, professional
fraternity for men in education, recently honored
Dean Gunning for his service as executive secretary
since the chapter was chartered in 1959. He has also
served on the state legislative committee for the
Association of Wisconsin State University Faculties.
Gunning and his wife plan to spend more time
at their cottage in St. Germain not far from his
favorite musky fishing spots. They have a son in
California.
