first words, editors notes
Firstly, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all those
who contribute to the magazine. It is very evident that
many in Broadstone are keen to be involved in their
community and are loyal, supporting the local shops,
helping friends and neighbours and caring for the
environment around them. You will see in this
edition that Broadstone shops offer a wide
variety of goods and this will hopefully inspire more
of us to shop locally.
Thanks also to all of you who entered the
previous Broadstone Puzzler competition (the
answers are on page 44). The winner was
David Williams. The prize offered this time is a
Broadstone Discount Card; to find out more about
this card go to page 23.
The Delph House article in the summer
edition of ‘BH18’ inspired one Broadstone
resident to contact us; go to page 15 to read
all about his memories of his father’s time
working for the Putnam family. We would
encourage more of you to contact us and
would be only too pleased to hear from you
with articles, photos or information about
local events.
David Williams receiving his prize, a bottle of
Grants Whiskey
Read on through and you’ll find an update
on what the Scouts have been doing including
a reinvention of the old ‘Bob-A-Job’ week,
nature and environmental articles, both of which
may inspire you to get involved and more news on
Broadstone F.C. We hope you enjoy!
The Broadstone Residents Association
desperately needs at least two Area Wardens
and four or five Road Wardens to cover various
sections of Broadstone.
To be an Area Warden is certainly not an
arduous task and requires somebody
(preferably an existing Road Warden) to
oversee a group of Road Wardens ensuring,
amongst other things, that they know when and
where to collect their bundles of magazines for
distribution.
A Road Warden is responsible for his/her
allotted group of houses, simply taking an
hour or two PER YEAR to deliver two sets of
magzines and one newsletter, including the
collection of subscriptions once a year.
Not an onerous requirement, surely - a great
way to get to know your neighbours and to take
some exercise too!
PLEASE ring me on 696445 for further
information.
Corfe Hills School
China - electronic pen pal scheme 2012
In January 2012 the Corfe Hills Pyramid will begin
to work with 500 students from Guiyang City in SW
China on an electronic pen pal scheme. Children in
China now learn English from the age of 3 and many
families recognise this as possibly the most important
aspect of their child’s education.
CC English School in Guixhou province has 21
branches with over 20,000 students enrolled to learn
English. Principal Sissy Yang is driving forward the
electronic pen pal scheme to give as many of her
students as possible the chance to correspond with a
student of similar age In the UK. We have agreed to
help her achieve her aim.
This is a picture of Sissy Yang with a student who
wishes to have a pen pal with our Pyramid. The best
500 applications will be selected and forwarded to us
for sharing out across the Pyramid. The students can
be seen here placing their applications in a specially
made post box in the CC English School Guiyang
City branch.
It is hoped that our students across the pyramid will
respond enthusiastically to the chance to develop a
friendship with a student in China. The enthusiasm in
China is overwhelming.
Additionally, plans are now reaching finalisation for 10
Corfe Hills students to spend a year in China teaching
English at CC English School in Guiyang when they
have completed their A Level courses this summer.
When you are shopping in Broadstone are there
things you think you won’t be able to buy here? Think
again!
Broadstone shops carry a lot of things we wouldn’t
normally expect from them. Where would you go, for
example, to buy Ginger Beer, a purse, de-ionized
water for your iron, WD40, a snow shovel, extra strong
thread? All these things and more can be bought on
the Broadway in shops, which might surprise you.
Did you know that Oakley Butchers sells Ginger
Beer? Shoes on the Broadway sell more than just
shoes and boots, you can also buy socks and even
wallets and purses there. Certain parcels can be sent
and collected from McColls, but of course our friendly
Post Office is only a few steps away too. Did you know
that Molly’s Coffee Shop also does outside catering
at reasonable prices? I have tried it and recommend
you do too. When I needed extra strong thread for
an upholstery job my first thought was Through The
Window where they have a section of haberdashery,
but they didn’t stock it and told me I would find it at
the Broadstone Cobblers near the roundabout. Longs
fish and chip shop will serve you wine with your meal
if you go into the restaurant and sit down. Village
Veg sell an assortment of items other than veg, as
the weather dictates, from snow shovels to WD40.
De-ionized water for your steam iron …? Any ideas..?
That’s it - Motor World.
All these little items along with the things we expect
- pet food, coffee, banks, food, carpets, sandwiches,
flowers [Broadstone Florist even sell you wine and
chocolates with your flowers if you wish]; I think we
need to applaud Broadstone for its varied, useful,
shops and do this by using them instead of driving
off elsewhere.
With the Broadstone in Bloom ladies looking after the
flower beds and the Chamber of Trade lighting us
up over Christmas we have a wonderful community
feeling to our shopping centre and we must use it so
it doesn’t die like other small towns.
If you have any other unexpected ‘finds’ whilst
shopping here let us know, we will publish another list
some time if there are enough.
turns 30 this year
happy Birthday!
This year it’s our 30th birthday and what
a year its going to be for the club. We
are continuing to build on the strong
foundations laid down by our founders back
in 1982 including, of course, Geoff Hare who
served as player and then Chairman for 25
years!
Although this is the start of a new calendar
year it is in fact the start of the second
half of the season for many of our teams
and some are even about to play their last
two or three games. I am delighted to
report that many of our teams have done
extremely well so far and some are
definitely heading towards the top of their
leagues and promotion.
As a community club however, our ethos
is ‘football for all’ and its been very
encouraging to hear from the managers of
Local football club rivals Broadstone Football
Club and Corfe Mullen United raised over £2500
for the Julia’s House Charity.
The money was raised early in 2011 in the
year when the respective Mums’ teams and the
Managers/Coaches’ teams clashed in the annual
derby matches and Barclays Bank with their
charity support scheme boosted the funds
further.
the next match will take place
on 14th April 2012
at Broadstone Recreation Ground
and all are welcome to come and support
their favourite team and help raise even more!
they will undoubtedly achieve about how well
their teams are bonding, how high their spirits
are in both matches and in training and most
importantly how much FUN they are all
having.
It’s been my pleasure to watch a number of
matches and despite the slightly cool winter
weather I do hope some of you will go and
enjoy some too. It’s amazing to see the skill
and determination of all the players from the
under 8s to the over 30s!
On behalf of everyone connected to the
club I’d like to wish you all a happy, healthy
and less financially austere new year and I
look forward to reporting about the end of
season positions and successes in the
various cup competitions in the next edition.
such a worthwhile cause.

Delph House
The article in the Residents’ Association Magazine,
Summer 2011, referring to Delph House, brought
back many memories. I lived in the cottage
below the tower, adjacent to the stables, from the
extremely cold winter of 1946, when Dad, W. Hewitt,
known as Bill Hewitt, was appointed Head Gardener by
Mr Putnam, to oversee the reinstatement of the gardens at
Delph House following the war years. I left Delph House
in 1955 when I married Kathleen; today we both live in
Broadstone.
When we moved to Delph House Dad had previously
been Head Gardener for many years on large estates
for titled aristocrats, but many changes were taking
place following the unsettled period of the war years.
Our family, Dad and Mum, (Mary Hewitt), also myself,
Bob Hewitt, were looking forward to happier post
war times. My brother Dick was still serving in the
Devonshire Regiment’s Intelligence Group, interrogating
the Japanese prisoners. Dick returned to the family
at Delph House Cottage in 1948. It is pleasant
to remember the times we spent at Delph House and
the community spirit achieved from Mr ‘Jimmy’
Putman and Mrs Violet Putman and all the staff employed
on the Estate. While you record much of the detail
regarding the Estate, it is the tight knit community spirit I
remember, probably due to the thankfulness that the war
was now at an end.
Photo - Bob Hewitt, age
20 years, by the peach and
nectarine greenhouse, Delph
House, 1951
The gardens, including
the greenhouses were in
a poor state but under the
directions of the Putnams,
Dad and his gardeners
set about restoring the
kitchen and pleasure
gardens to what would be
expected on this a
family home. The
greenhouses were being repaired and painted by
Charlie White, the Broadstone builder, after all
remedials: the carnation greenhouse staging at Delph
House for visual impact of blossoms and fragrance was
unsurpassed.
Mum was a very experienced cook, having met Dad
on a large Estate where he was Head Gardener. Nora
Streeter, the cook at Delph House, and Mum struck up an
immediate friendship and helped each other over the years.
When Nora retired to the cottages at Bryanston, Blandford,
their friendship continued until Norah’s death.
Living on an Estate, community spirit appeared to
prevail. Myself having been born on a Viscount’s
Estate, was aware of the close community
friendships, for example, my first introduction to
attending a local football match shortly after
arriving at Delph House was going to AFC
Bournemouth on the bus with the Butler. Now as a season
ticket holder 65 years later this direct relationship is not
overlooked.
As a teenager living on the Estate certain disciplines
had to be met. Dad and Mum instilled in me the
discipline of living on Country Estates. Community
spirit from Delph House was extended to the
Broadstone village, where I worked for a fairly short
period; Dad was a member of the Conservative Club
and Mum attended Whist Drives. It was through
involvement in village affairs including the
Broadstone Horticultural Society that the James
Putnam Cup was presented; today at the 2011 show
schedule, this cup is presented to a Horticultural
Society Member whose whole family obtain the
highest number of points.
I remain a Member of this Society, and in memory of my
parents take part in the Broadstone shows: also during
the Poole in Bloom Competition in 2010 my garden was
dedicated to my father – as ‘The Timeless Garden’ it was
awarded The Best Overall Poole In Bloom Winner.
Photo - Bob Hewitt’s ‘The Timeless Garden’
Was it by chance, or the memory of Dad often saying to
me over many years of successful horticulture, “There is
no such thing as green fingers, it is what to do and when
to do it.” These words have given me satisfaction and
success in my chosen hobby.
Sadly Poole in Bloom is no more. The Borough of Poole
decided 2010 was to be the last year for the competition
and would not receive any support in the future.
When Mum and Dad retired they moved to 72 York
Road. From here Dad continued to work for the
Putnam family, looking after the Bournemouth Times
Newspaper printing works’ extensive gardens in
Branksome until shortly before he died in 1972 aged 84
years; Mum died in 1997 aged 96 years.
Firstly we would like to introduce a new member to
our team, PC 2563 Dave Street. Dave has been
working with us for almost a year on a temporary
basis having patrolled Poole North on response
duties prior to this, so he knows the area and issues
well.
Crime and Anti-social behaviour statistics
We are pleased to report that crime figures for
December 2011 are extremely low. Only 12 crimes
were reported compared to 25 for the same period in
2010. Anti-social behaviour figures have followed a
similar vein with just 9 incidents reported compared to
23 for the previous year.
This is a result of both active patrolling in areas where
incidents have been reported as well as listening to
our residents’ issues and concentrating on those
priorities in particular.
There were 2 attempted dwelling burglaries
reported, one in Stonecrop Close and the other in
Corfe Way. On both occasions entry was attempted
at the rear of the premises.
There were 2 non-dwelling burglaries; one a garage
in Ridgeway where padlocks were cut and a lawn
mower and carpet cleaner were stolen, the other
was in Clarendon Road where a security light was
deactivated and entry gained to the garage via a
window and various items stolen.
Please check your building’s security both inside and
out, houses and outbuildings and should you want
any advice please call us and we can arrange to do a
Crime Prevention visit for you.
There were no thefts of or from vehicles this month,
which is reassuring.
There were 4 other thefts reported. The most
interesting one being theft of milk. This was the
first milk theft since our Operation in November.
However, 3 females in their late teens were
detained, one will receive a caution and the other two
restorative reprimands.
Four other crimes were reported, two being criminal
Ice, snow and Grit
Part time Lighting
Following successful trials in Branksome,
Hamworthy, Merley and Bearwood, Poole Council
plan to extend Part Time Lighting to other areas
of the town. In selected roads streetlights will be
turned off from midnight to 6am.
Switching off the lights will provide an estimated
yearly saving of £14,800 and a carbon reduction of
83 tonnes.
A number of suitable roads/streets in Broadstone
have been proposed and discussions are taking
place with Council Officers, local Police and
Councilors to agree which roads might be suitable.
Once confirmed and approved by the police all
18 | Winter 2012
cOunciL news
This time last year we had endured a month of heavy
snow and ice, residents had problems getting to work
or keeping hospital appointments and the council had
used up half of its winter supply of salt grit.
This year the council has two new grit lorries able
to carry more than twice as much grit as existing
vehicles, extra grit bins and a full stock of salt grit.
At the time of writing long range forecasts are
predicting mild weather well into January, but in
the event of snow and ice the council is far better
prepared than last year. Main roads and bus routes
will be gritted, however, the council have never
gritted side roads and pavements and will not be
doing so this year.
Last year there were problems with buses; the
number 4 was unable to cross Broadstone Way and
had difficulties on Hillbourne Road and the top of York
Road. The number 32 had problems on Whitchurch
Avenue and there were problems on Lower Blandford
Road and West Way. The Highway Maintenance
Department is aware of the problems and will ensure
that these areas are gritted this winter if it becomes
necessary.
I had a meeting with the manager of the Highways
Maintenance department to discuss the above
and the fact that there are a number of side roads
in Broadstone with steep slopes. Last winter a
number of public-spirited residents agreed to store
some bags of grit and work with their neighbours to
spread the grit on their roads.
We have a list of these residents and it has been
agreed that in the event of severe weather it may be
possible to distribute some bags of grit as last winter,
however, this will very much be subject to resources
and grit being available. I will contact these residents
individually if necessary.
Last winter bags of grit cost about £7 per bag, this
year bags are available in supermarkets at £3.99.
Clearing Ice and Snow from Pavements Yourself
There is no law stopping residents from clearing
snow and ice on the pavement outside their homes
or from public spaces. It is unlikely that anyone
would be sued or held legally responsible for any
injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully.
Residents should follow the snow code when
clearing snow and ice safely.
Residents with concerns are advised to check official
advice on these matters on the Directgov web site,
which provides legal advice and tips on clearing snow
and ice safely and effectively.
Roy Godfrey
residents in streets affected by the scheme will be
written to well in advance to give them adequate
notice.
The final list of areas confirmed and residential
consultation letters were posted to residents in
potentially affected roads and sent out on the week
commencing January 3rd. Responses from residents
must be received by week ending January 27th.
The final list of roads will be presented to the
Transport Advisory Group committee in February
and their findings passed to the Cabinet meeting
in March for final approval. Installation works for
conversion of lights to part night lighting in agreed areas to
commence in April.
Proposed traveller sites in dorset
Independent consultants Bakers Associates have
reviewed land within the Borough of Poole and have
identified 23 sites that have been subject to detailed
moved, there is significant tree cover, which should
be protected. The site has good access to services.
After the Christmas festivities, I enjoy something a
little less rich. Humous is a delicious dip and goes
just as well with roasted chips or crisps as it does with
freshly sliced raw vegetables, such as carrots, celery
or peppers.
Ingredients
1 tin of chick peas
1 pinch of dried chillis
1 tsp ground or whole cumin seeds
salt and pepper
2 cloves of garlic, chopped
1 1/2 tbsp tahini
5 - 6 tbsp olive oil
lemon/lime juice to taste (I use the juice of 2 limes)
chopped fresh herbs, e.g. basil, coriander
First, grind the dried chillis and cumin in a pestle and
mortar. Place the chick peas, chillis and cumin, salt,
the barbers lounge
Flavoured Humous
pepper, chopped garlic, tahini, olive oil, lemon or lime
juice and fresh (or dried) herbs into a blender or food
processor. Blend until the humous is as smooth as
you like. Taste and adjust seasoning and herbs as
necessary.
I enjoy humous when it is not so smooth and the chick
peas, though partly blended, are still visible. In our
home we like spice and so are likely to put in more
than one pinch of dried chillis. When blending, you
may choose to add only 4 tablespoons of oil to start
with and depending on how it looks, add a couple
more spoons as you see fit. Use extra virgin olive oil
or a flavoured olive oil, such as chilli infused, for extra
flavour.
This is great as a dip or as a side to a Moroccan style
dish, such as a tagine meal with cous cous. Certainly
this gives a taste of the Middle East.
Brand new medical facility for you in Broadstone.
You will be delighted to know there is a new medical facility in Broadstone.
This is a purpose built hydrotherapy pool, which has been added as an extension to
Broadstone Physiotherapy.
Hydrotherapy is a medically recognised and well known treatment for pain and
rehabilitation.
Nearly all large NHS Hospitals have an in-house Hydrotherapy Pool.
Many Private Hospitals will also have a pool – locally the Nuffield Hospital in Bournemouth
does but the BMI Harbour Hospital in Poole does not.
The Broadstone Physiotherapy pool has been designed to be sterilised using Ultra violet
light so no chlorine smell or skin irritation and is warmed to 35 C (like a warm bath) by
modern heat exchange technology.
There is full wheelchair and disabled access and personal shower & changing facilities.
Hydrotherapy is an effective and comfortable form of treatment. The warmth of the
water gently eases pain and the natural buoyancy makes movement easier.
So working with your physiotherapist on a one to one basis you will be able to increase
your mobility and strengthen weakened muscles.
Hydrotherapy will really help if you:
Have a New hip/knee replacement
Or an old stiff joint that has been replaced
Have recently had Back surgery
Have bone or joint fractures
Suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis
Are an athlete needing rehabilitation
Have a Neurological condition such as stroke or cerebral palsy
Need help with your Pain management
Your first appointment will include an assessment to establish how we can help you.
The pool has easy access and you do not need to be able to swim.
We strongly recommend that you check with your own doctor to confirm that
hydrotherapy would be suitable and appropriate for you.
I thought a few tips on how to have a bonfire
but not to annoy your neighbours might be
useful.
Firstly, choose a day when there is as little
wind as possible, although a light breeze can
help the fire burn. Make sure your garden
rubbish is dry. If it is damp then the chances
are that it would compost anyway, so this
should not be burnt. Damp waste will also
cause the smoke which people hate. If you
have dry garden waste it is worth saving it up
until there is a large pile. Sticks and dry grass
burn very quickly if used to start the fire.
So, make a pile of smaller twigs and dry
matter leaving a gap underneath to put in
Make sure if there is any wind you light the
fire on the side where the wind is blowing
from, it should be possible to use only one
match.
Keep a close eye on what is burning to start
with, and make sure that the fire is drawn
Calling all Broadstone residents... we need your
help. Do you have something that you would like
to share with your fellow residents, such as stories,
poetry, gardening tips, recipes, book reviews or
ideas for a puzzle? We would love to hear from
you with anything that you’d like to submit for the
upwards to burn with as little smoke as
possible. As long as the waste is dry and the
fire gets hot quickly it should be possible to
keep the fire burning hot enough to cause
very little smoke. Once the bed of the fire is
glowing then it is time to put on some of the
damper things, but only in small amounts,
allowing them to dry out quickly in the heat
and burn away. When all the combustible
material is used up the fire should be raked
into the centre of the heap to contain the
area. It is a good idea not to leave the fire
unchecked as some burning bits can fall off
and spread the fire if it is not attended.
My best bonfires are those which burn with
very little smoke, burn very quickly and leave a
glowing pyramid of ash which is still hot the
next day. When all is cold the remains can be
put in the compost to add to the mixture.
As a safety precaution I always have either
the hose or a bucket or two of water handy in
case the fire should get out of hand.
We suggest that residents check their local
bye-laws before having a fire.
“stay safe - and enjoy your fire.”
Winter 2012 | 33
Broadstone Recreation Ground has seen its first
Redwings (Turdus iliacus) of the year; they arrived
two weeks ago and wasted no time getting stuck into
the holly berries, and they are still here. My wife and
I witnessed a dozen of these winter visitors on the
9th of January in the same tree, and in the hedgerow
of hawthorn trees that separate the football pitches
Fieldfares have been busy eating the berries. Tawny
Owls (Strix aluco) are still vocal at night and in the
early hours, a magpie (Pica pica) has started to build
a nest in one of the birch trees; this bird starts nest
building earlier every year.
We visited Dunyeats Hill Reserve to check if the
pond had frog spawn in it. I know it’s early but I
have found it here in late January. Overhead a
buzzard kept us company searching the heath for
prey. While we were surveying the bog area that
lies close to the pond we accidently flushed a snipe
(Gallinago gallinago) and a woodcock (Scolopax
rusticola) that were busy feeding, but we never saw
one Dartford warbler (Sylvia undata) or Stonechat
(Saxicola torquata). There was no sign of life on
any of the ants nests (Formica rufa) including
(Formica sanguine) but four feet underground they
would be active. I have found some of these nests
active on the 22nd of January; if the sun is out warming
the soil these tiny invertebrates will make their way
to the surface and gather en masse on the top of
their nest, which is known as the solarium, absorbing
the sun’s heat into their bodies which they then
take back into the nest where it is released. On the
botanical side I found many one year old plants of
the Marsh thistle (Circium palustre), which is good
news for the Goldfinches and Linnets (Carduelis
cannabina) that I have seen here in the summer
feeding on the seed heads of the older thistles. Also,
turkey tail fungi still decorates many old tree stumps,
and tiny colourful lichens e.g. (Cladonia floerkeana)
and (Cladonia coccifera) easily recognised by their
grey, erect podetia and conspicuous red hymenial
discs growing in the acid soil here on the heath.
I went into Pocket Park to check if there was any activity
in the pond yet e.g. frogs in amplexus; this is when
the male grasps the female in his loving embrace
to fertilize the eggs as they are laid, they can stay
in this position for days. I have found them here in
January in the past but that was a few years ago.
The only trouble with them mating early could mean
a sudden frost will kill the spawn. The frogs that use
this pond to spawn also have to contend with drought
because every year the pond dries up and the tadpoles
perish. The highlight of Pocket Park today was being
greeted by half a dozen goldfinches (Carduelis
carduelis); these beautiful red faced birds are always
a delight to see, usually in small flocks known as a
charm, the perfect word for the most handsome of
the finch family. And did you know a group of crows
is known as a murder? Very fitting as these black
Corvids are afraid of nothing; I have often seen them
attacking Buzzards.
Friday 6th I went to see if there had been any
activity at a Badger sett that I have been watching in
Broadstone for several years and found someone
had tried blocking up the entrance to the sett
with logs and branches. I spent a good half hour
clearing the rubbish from the holes; why do people
do this? It had been done recently over the
Christmas holidays because I check this sett every
week so with a bit of luck the Badgers may have
been sound asleep deep underground. They do
come out in the winter and forage for food but they
have been known to occasionally stay underground
for days. This is the first time in the ten years of
badger watching that persecution of this beautiful
animal has happened. Perhaps the person/persons
that carried out this abominable crime did not get
what they wanted for Christmas so decided to take
it out on the Badgers. I know some people may be
thinking Badgers are a pest, they come into your
garden and dig up the lawn looking for worms, but
that’s a small price to pay for living with Badgers,
for there is no cleaner animal nor one that more
assiduously keeps itself free from dirt or parasites. To
watch them come out at dusk to feed and in May to
see the cubs playing, is a sight you will always
remember.

BRoAdstone stRoKe CLUB
I was pleased to help with organising the Stroke Club
in 1985 and, in spite of not “wanting to get involved”,
I am still the organiser/Chairman of the club. We are
a purely social club and a very happy small group of
people doing various activities and especially enjoy
days out and pub lunches!
When we were two or three years old the members
felt they wanted and needed a special badge. After
much discussion the design was agreed. We had
a member who had a contact with the SAS and I
wrote to the Commanding Officer asking if he had
any objection to our using the idea of their motto
“Who Dares Wins” but changing one word to “Who
Tries Wins”. I had a charming letter back giving their
approval. We have a super shield made by an
ex-Royal Marine.
We meet every other Friday at the Conservative Club,
Tudor Road 2pm -4.30pm. Our ages range from late
60’s to 90’s. We are a friendly group and welcome
new members and their carers. Please telephone
first to make sure we are there as we might be out
on a pub lunch! If you would like more details of our
activities please phone Kathy McDavid on 694179.
WeeK is BaCK!
How many of you remember Bob-A-Job week (later
renamed Scout Job Week) from years gone by?
Bob-A-Job week started in the late 1940s when
Scouts were given an official card and went round
knocking on doors, wearing their uniform and
offering to do small jobs such as sweeping the drive,
running an errand or doing a bit of gardening in return for
‘a bob’ towards local scout funds. It was renamed Scout
Job Week with decimalisation but was finally axed in
1992 following concerns about youngsters knocking on
the doors of strangers.
2012 sees the launch of scout Community Week
from 14-20th May, a nation-wide initiative by the
Scout Association that takes the best bits of Bob-a-Job
Week and offers groups the opportunity to design a
fund raising project that delivers real benefits locally,
encouraging groups of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and
Explorers to ‘do 1 thing’ to have an impact on their
community.
The first Scout Community Week trial event last year
was a great success, with gardening, building bird
boxes, painting buildings and litter picking just some
of the projects carried out by the eight Scout groups
who took part. The event is now going national
and we, at Broadstone, would like to be part of this
adventure. However, to do so We need YoUR heLP.
• do • you do you have have any any ideas ideas of projects/tasks
• are • are you you a group, a group, charity charity or organization
Just a few suggestions that have come from the national
Scout website include:
• Plant a community garden.
• Adopt a town monument and keep it clean.
• Plant flowers at the town hall.
• Paint a mural or clean up a local park.
• Paint fences or park benches.
• Make bird feeders for public places.
• Adopt an acre of a park or a mile of roadside to keep
clean.
• Clean up litter along a river or in a park.
All money raised from Scout Community Week
will go directly back into Scouting, 75% to the
Broadstone Scout Group and 25% to the
Development Grants Fund. This is a national Scout
fund, which provides a financial lifeline to those
young people and their families in need of additional
support to take part in Scouting. The fund also
offers match-funding to help young people take part in
expeditions and helps families purchase Scout
uniform.
One example of the work of the Development Grants
Board is Cub Scout Charlie who has cerebral palsy
and sometimes needs a wheelchair. As a member
of his Scout Gang Show, he needed extra help
getting to and from rehearsals. Charlie and his family
successfully applied to the Development Grants
Board to help with the cost of hiring a taxi to
transport him to rehearsals each night and ensure he
didn’t miss out on being in the show.
At Broadstone Scout Group we are very lucky to
have our own Scout Hall but that means we also
have the vast expenses that go with owning our
own building! So fund raising is an important aspect
of our group’s work. You might have seen us in the
“toastrack” running a tombola during the Christmas
parade. A huge thank you to everyone in the
community who bought tickets – we raised a
fantastic £120.
in this regard we would welcome advice from
Members of Broadstone Scout Group are no
strangers to helping, and getting involved in, the
local community. Last year, Brookdale Beavers did
a sponsored walk and raised £310 for the Poole
Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Broadstone
Scouts held a sponsored raft race at their
autumn camp and raised £144.50 for Julia’s House
following a visit to the care home and Springdale Cubs
visited Delph House in the week before Christmas
to sing carols to the residents. Our units made a
fantastic show with their entries in the annual Christmas
Parade and our Cubs and Scouts took part in
the Remembrance Day celebrations at the War
Memorial.
We hope that you will come with us on this
exciting journey for 2012, not only in giving us ideas
for Scout Community Week, but also in supporting
our fund raising. We hope to be able to set up a
means of on-line giving in addition to the more
traditional sponsorship forms. We have a page on
Last summer while spending a few days with my
wife in London we decided to visit our old stomping
ground, Clapton, Hackney and Stoke Newington to
see what changes had taken place since the1960s.
The first real surprise was to find several of the
wonderful Victorian council houses, where our friends
had lived were gone, bulldozed into oblivion and
replaced by grotesque three-storey private flats.
Modern and clean yes, but architecturally boring,
lacking the worn steps that led up to two Corinthian
columns with ornate capitals; they had supported the
flat porch, which was once the outstanding feature of
the houses that had stood there for the last hundred
and fifty years but had since disappeared, very sad.
They did the same when modernising Euston station
in 1961 by knocking down the Doric arch that had
stood at the entrance to the station since 1837 and
then after demolition decided to dump over 50% of
the arch into the River Lea. What a horrible resting
place for such a superb piece of architecture, but we
are told this is progress and nothing will stand in its
way; the truth is this was vandalism. They wanted
to do the same to Gilbert Scott’s masterpiece, St
Pancras station and they would have done had it
not have been for John Betjeman’s Campaign for its
preservation.
One place we did visit, which I was told had changed
dramatically for the better and on arrival I could not
believe what I saw, was Abney Park Cemetery in
Stoke Newington. This old Victorian burial ground
which was created in the early Victorian period is
known as one of the Magnificent Seven, the other
six being Kensal Green, West Norwood, Highgate,
Nunhead, Brompton and Tower Hamlets. Abney
Park is an historic parkland originally laid out in
the early 18th century by Lady Mary Abney and Dr
Isaac Watts and the neighbouring Hartop family and
covered an area of approx 13 acres. In 1840 it
became a non-denominational garden cemetery
semi-public park arboretum, covering an area in
total of 32 acres. I must admit I never took much
notice of the place whilst passing it every day in
the early 1960s, going to and from work; it always
appeared to be closed to the public except for a
small area that was used on rare occasions for
burials, its only real patrons being ghosts and spirits
accompanied by bats and owls. The tombs being
overgrown with bramble and large sculptured
memorials of Angels having long been strangled by
ivy had finally disappeared from sight many years ago.
Now the entrance to the cemetery had changed, gone
was the gothic gloominess it once portrayed, it now
smiled. Someone had been busy cleaning the entrance
pillars; they were now white, the gates and railings
VANDALISM to CREATIVITY
by Keith Clements; Parks, Nature Reserves, Heathlands
had been painted and there was a sign above the gate
welcoming people to the visitors’ centre. I went in to
see what changes had taken place inside and again I
could not believe my eyes; some of the memorials that
were once black being covered in years of pollution
had been cleaned. A beautiful lion that lay on the tomb
of the Bostock family once cloaked in ivy and lichen,
now gleamed in the sun and a small head stone with the
name Aaron Buzacott - Secretary of the Anti-Slavery
Society (now International) - peeped out between
shrubs surrounded by forget-me-nots, (Myosotis
arvensis). The centrepiece has to be the Gothic
chapel now open for activities. Long gone are the
once imagined vampires that lived there; only their
shadows remain. William and Catherine Booth,
founders of the Salvation Army are buried here.
This one time neglected cemetery has now become
a nature reserve/craft centre workshop with regular
activities including woodcarving and stone carving
classes. Students have just finished carving, out
of Portland stone, tree markers with the name and
life size study of the leaf. These are to be fixed at
the base of the tree indicated. Green woodwork
and practical conservation, a wildlife gardening
club for youngsters, music and poetry, nature trails
throughout the year including bird, fungi and plant
recognition and in winter a twig identification
foray, takes place now; who would have thought of
something as simple as twig identification. The
cemetery can also be used for filming and has been;
Tony Robinson of Time Team and Baldric fame has
just finished a series about vampires and in the
summer families are welcome to use the grounds
for picnics and other events. While we were
there a local drama group called the Roar
Theatre were putting on Shakespeare’s “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream” that evening and for the
rest of the week and tickets had already sold out.
Abney Park being transformed into a world of fairies and
Shakespearean dialect, wonderful stuff; now that’s
what I call real progress. This all began in 1991
when a charitable trust was set up to conserve the
site and make it accessible to the whole community.
It offers free environmental education, NVQ training,
heritage skills and volunteer workshops as well as open
days and guided walks. The park is open every day
during daylight hours from 9.30am to 4.30pm and the
visitors centre is normally open Monday to Friday.
If ever you find yourself in this part of London,
pay Abney Park a visit. I promise, you will not be
disappointed. What was once a neglected resting
place for the dead is now screaming with LIFE.
churches TOgeTher news
Broadstone United Reformed Church
The Church facilities have been enhanced in
the year: the Church Hall has been redecorated
and new heating installed, the latter generously
supported by a grant from the SITA Trust.
Also new notice and signboards in front of
the church hopefully reflect a more modern,
welcoming church.
Our family Pop-in Days, held at Easter,
Pentecost, Harvest and Advent, continue
to be very successful, showing parents and
children the different aspects of our church life
through fellowship and fun. These are now also
complemented by sessions specifically for older
children, taking place on the second Saturday of
each month.
Our Junior Church collecting this year has
focused on Water Aid’s “Buy a Toilet” scheme
where for £40 they can install a basic toilet for
a family... and so far we have raised enough
money for over 30 of them. We take it for
granted that every house has one however, for
many in the developing world this isn’t the case;
a total of 2.5 billion people in the world live
without adequate sanitation. This isn’t just an
inconvenience or embarrassing, it causes major
problems with hygiene, spread of disease and
pollution of water sources.
More recently, our collection of 92 shoeboxes
for Operation Christmas Child has again
provided much-needed - and so joyously
welcomed - presents for poor children around
the world.
In October, a small group from Broadstone
URC travelled to Landau in Germany to join
other delegates, including those from our
twin church, Church of the Twelve Apostles,
Frankenthal (Germany) to both celebrate
and consider the further development of the
Twinnings between member churches of the
United Reformed Church of the UK and the
Evangelical Church of the Palatinate.
Having raised over £1,700, the church again
received the Gold Certificate from the
organisers of the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride
to recognise our excellent and long-standing
fund-raising commitment to this annual event.
In 2011, 26 Broadstone URC cyclists - young
and not so young - cycled an overall 818 miles,
including 10 ladies doing 10 miles each to
clock up 100 miles to commemorate the 100th
Anniversary of Macmillan Cancer Support.
St John’s Parish Church
In the summer we started to hold Messy
Church once a month for young families. The
Methodist and URC Churches run something
similar. It does not make the church messy but it
is a time to be crafty and creative, to celebrate
Jesus and have a tea party. At the Christmas
celebration in church, the children helped tell
the nativity story and starred two Marys and five
Wise Men.
This January a new Alpha course begins. It is
held at the Waterloo Christian Centre, Milne
Road, and is for anyone investigating the
Christian faith.
The main news is that the Reverend Martin
Fredriksen is to retire and his last services will
be on Sunday 29th January. He has served the
Parish wonderfully as Vicar of Broadstone for
18 years, and in total has been in the Ministry
for more than 40 years. There are many
throughout Broadstone and in the Parish who
will miss him greatly. We wish him and Dianne a
very happy retirement.
Broadstone Methodist Church
As a worshipping community we look forward to
a new year packed with various services to meet
all ages, as well as events that would cater for
those who prefer something different.
The family film nights are becoming more
and more popular with a ‘full house’ on 3rd
December with the film ‘The Polar Express’.
Many youngsters, mums and dads enjoyed
tasty mince pies and soft drink afterwards.
The next film night was on 7th January for ‘Mr
Poppers Penguins’.
The very next day we held our regular Café
Church and heard Prof. Norman Kember
who was taken hostage in Iraq in 2005 whilst
on a peacemaking mission. He spoke of his
involvement with the peace movement and his
experience whilst in captivity.
Messy church is another opportunity for
families to get together; the next is planned
during February half term. We have recently
completed a ‘Christianity Explored’ course and
hope to run another in a few months time.
Broadstone Methodist church continues to
enjoy being host to so many people who
visit our coffee lounge, luncheon club, light
lunches and the numerous activities held on our
premises such as U3A, Wessex Dancing,
Karate, Guides and Brownies to name a few.
Whatever reason for your visit be assured of a
warm welcome!

Aircraft Noise
Concerns over aircraft noise, especially at night, have been expressed by a significant
number of Broadstone residents following minor adjustments to flight paths. The
changes were a response to public consultation last year. Broadstone’s councillors
resolve the issues. Several public meetings have taken place and from these it became
BROADSTONE CHAMBER OF TRADE
AND COMMERCE - NEWS
Did you see Elvis in Broadstone’s Broadway? Yes, it
was the man himself and he cleared his diary at the
request of the BCTC to switch on the Christmas lights
to mark the beginning of the festive season!
Outside Budgens, underneath the monkey
puzzle tree, on a clear and dry early evening, a
record-breaking crowd enjoyed some of Elvis’
greatest hits, and his fans revelled in the free hot
drinks and food so generously donated by Molly’s,
Budgens, Greggs, and the Blackwater Stream.
After his gig, Elvis was pleased to pose for photographs
with many of his adoring fan club. Luckily, there are
no reports of ladies of a certain age requiring medical
attention!
The Broadstone Chamber has a committee
specially to arrange this first key highlight
in the big build up to Christmas and Emma
Hamilton Cole, Chair of the BCTC, gives her thanks
to Meryl Ponsford and Maria Primmer (Kestrel),
Vikki Slade (Molly’s), Martin Latyon (MSL Designs),
Amanda Bursey (SOS Swim Shop) and Matthew
Horne (Caesar’s).
On the following Saturday, you couldn’t move in the
Broadway. Why? Santa Claus came to town.
Under the leadership of Stuart Magnus (Newton
Magnus Accountants), who has now celebrated his
Silver Jubilee with the Christmas Parade – thank
you, Stuart! - over 30 local groups and associations
congregated in Story Lane and processed to the
Broadway.
Scouts, Guides, Beavers, Kindergartens, Nurseries,
the Bournemouth Carnival Queen, Broadstone in
Bloom and many, many others – and, of course,
Father Christmas! - they were all there! A magnificent
turnout!
The crowds stood three or four deep in the Broadway
to applaud all of the local groups – and the dashing
young uniformed firemen, showing off their big red
engine – who had worked so hard to join in the fun.
Emma Hamilton Cole welcomed the Mayor of Poole,
Cllr Graham Wilson, and Mrs Wilson. Bob Williams
expertly described the scene in his running
commentary. Volunteers walked up and down the
crowd filling many buckets with lots of loose change.
Did you watch the Christmas Parade? What did you
think of the Christmas decorations? Did you sing
RSPB “Big Bird Watch” & An Ever Growing ICT at
S Springdale First School
It’s lovely to have the opportunity, once again to
share some of the exciting things that have been
taking place at Springdale First School.
The school places great emphasis on road safety
and safe travel and readers may remember that
last year the school was closely involved with the
Safezone trial on Springdale Road. The project
was a great success with reductions in the speed
at which drivers were travelling. Safezone recently
won a National Highways Magazine Excellence
award for the project which had most improved
safety in a local community. I am delighted that
the children’s engagement with the project was a
key factor in Safezone winning the award.
At the moment the children are excitedly preparing
for the RSPB “Big Bird Watch.” A group of
enthusiastic children are taking a lead on this and
we are very pleased that we have been supported
by local businesses.
We are aware that we have lovely grounds
and that encouraging our children to take an
interest in the world around them is very valuable.
As one of the Birdwatch Group said, “We want to get
children outdoors!” This builds on previous
work that has been done to encourage the
children to be environmentally aware. In the
summer term the school achieve the Bronze level
Eco-Award reflecting this commitment.
SInformation and Communication Technology (ICT)
is an ever growing part of all of our worlds. The
children are very confident when using all kinds of
technologies and love showing their families what
they can do at our regular ICT open afternoons.
Recently we have been able to extend this to the
local community with an opportunity for children
to bring in their relatives and show them how to
use the internet safely. We’re also pleased to be
able to offer evening sessions for members of
the local community who might want to brush up
word processing skills, make better use of digital
photography or who want to get more use from the
internet. Anyone is welcome and our school office
will be happy to provide details.
did you know?
Broadstone Youth Centre is the home of the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award in Poole.
This year we have over 100 young people undertaking
their D of E Award at Broadstone Youth Centre at
Bronze, Silver & Gold level.
During the summer months we offer the expedition
section at all 3 levels of the award; this involves
young people attending the youth centre on a weekly
basis for a 3 month period and undertaking their
practice & qualifying ventures in a variety of local
56 | Winter 2012
POOLE
areas, including the Purbecks, New Forest,
Cranborne Chase, Dartmoor & the Brecon Beacons.
The D of E at Broadstone isn’t just about the
expedition section; during the course of the year
we run a number of different projects to support
young people with the various sections of the award
(although young people do not have to be doing
their D of E to participate in any of the projects at
the youth centre). For example, British Red Cross
Babysitting Courses, Life Choice Projects, Health
& Style Courses and our latest project…The
Apprentice Fundraiser Project, involved young
people raising money for local charities. One of the
challenges was for the teams to participate in the
Broadstone Christmas Parade (you may have seen
us!). Other challenges included a charity bag packing
activity at Tesco’s Tower Park, and the next challenge
will be a Charity Car Boot Sale later in the month. The
young people have decided that any money raised
will be going to Julia’s House & Woofability.
If you would like more information on any projects
at Broadstone Youth Centre, please contact Nikki
