Dakota Wesleyan holds a 34-30-1 edge over the Trojans. The last time the two schools met was Sept. 4, 2004, when DSUedged the Tigers, 21-20. This is just the third meeting between DWU andthe Trojans since the Tigers joined the GPAC in 2000.DWU in season openersDakota Wesleyan is 41-65-4 (.373) all-time in season opening games. The Tigers are 1-1 in season openers in the past two years. In 2009, theTigers opened the season against Morningside and lost 31-7. Last year,DWU started with a road game at Dordt College and won, 42-7.Competitive quarterback battleTo start the 2010 season, the Tigers had two players who had nevertaken a college snap vying for time behind center. This season, DWU isconsiderably more experienced at the quarterback spot.Sophomore Jon Bane got the starting nod to take the snaps to openthe season against Dakota State, but his backup is equally as talented.Junior Kyle Cool transferred to DWU this offseason after two successfulseasons at San Jose City College.Bane threw for 1,920 yards and 12 touchdowns as a true freshman in2010. He completed 59 percent of his passes and threw 10 interceptions.Cool earned All-Coast Conference honorable mention and helped his teamto the league title last year. He dealt with an injury during fall camp, but isexpected to see plenty of playing time throughout 2011.The Tigers also signed freshman quarterback Joey Olson in the mix.The former Sturgis Brown High School standout had a solid prep careerand could make an impact on the Tigers’ offense in the future.Experienced playmakersDakota Wesleyan’s offense returns plenty of experienced athletes tocompliment its talented quarterbacks. Leading the way for the DWUoffense this season will be junior running back Josh Endres and juniorwide receiver Anthony Muilenburg.Endres, who ran for 1,001 yards as a sophomore and set a schoolrecord with 316 rushing yards in a game, earned All-GPAC First TeamOffense honors in 2010 and was named a Victory Sports Network PreseasonAll-American in the offseason. He was the Tigers’ workhorse lastseason, and will look for the same role as a junior.Running with Endres will be sophomore Francois Barnaud andfreshman Arthur Brown. Barnaud ran for 132 yards as a freshman and willlook for a bigger role as a sophomore. Brown comes to DWU from SanGabriel in Rosemead, Calif., and will add speed and athleticism to theTigers’ running back corps.Muilenburg also earned All-GPAC First Team Offense accolades aftercatching 59 passes for 638 yards and three touchdowns. He, along withseniors Russell McGuire and Nate Ovenden, will look to get pastopponents’ secondary and make use of the Tigers’ talented group ofpassers. McGuire has been with the Tigers for four seasons and Ovendenjoined the team last year, but dealt with injuries throughout much of theseason.Senior-Heavy Linebacking CorpsDWU’s linebacking corps should be second to none in 2010 thanks toseveral veteran leaders.Three of the four starting linebackers Saturday are seniors, and all– MORE –three had standout seasons in 2010. Jim Williams and Lucas Sieve bothearned All-GPAC Honorable Mention in 2009 as juniors and Dane Carlson

The Tigers’ defensive line should be especiallystrong with returning players such as All-GPAC Honorable Mention selectionand 2011 team captain Zach Reker, as well as Eric Gruis, AaronRolen, Craig Henglefelt and Marco Mora. All five players saw time onthe line last season.Leading the Tigers’ secondary in 2011 will be seniors Tom Jardingand Jesse Holz. Holz led the team in total and solo tackles as a junior in2010, and both players earned All-GPAC Honorable Mention status.Joining the duo will be senior David McGuire and junior DustinBergmeier, who transferred to Dakota Wesleyan in the offseason from theUniversity of Sioux Falls. One question mark in fall camp was the Tigers’ linebacker corps, which took a hit to graduation. Junior Mike Barnaud and sophomoreJordan Hermanson both saw playing time last year, but sophomoreAnthony Cervantes and freshman Jeff Maassen each get their first startSaturday.Solid Special TeamsDWU returns plenty of talent in its special teams unit. Senior LeifEvers is back for a second season as the team’s kicker. He made theswitch from soccer to football prior to the 2010 season. Junior DerekCarlson will take over punting duties. He was also the team’s punter as asophomore.Muilenburg and Russell McGuire will return both kicks and punts forDWU.
