PSYCHOLOGYRESEARCH INSTITUTEANNUAL REPORT1 August 2005 – 31 July 2006http://www.science.ulster.ac.uk/psyri/Welcome to the Psychology Research Institute at the University of Ulster. The Institute operates tosupport research carried out by individual researchers within our three recognised research groupsBehavioral Neuroscience, Peace and Conflict and Health Psychology on the Coleraine and Mageecampuses. Researchers within the Institute have attracted external funding of over 3 million poundssince 2001 from the BBSRC; ESRC; EPSRC; The Wellcome Trust; The National Institute of Health: TheTempleton and Russell Sage Foundations and other government and charitable sources.State of the art experimental facilities have been purpose built to support our behavioural neuroscienceresearchers and a SRIF 3 funded upgrade of human experimental facilities will commence in 2006. Anactive group of postgraduate students plays a fundamental part in our ongoing research programmes.

1. FOREWORD BY THE PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR(RESEARCH AND INNOVATION)‘Excellence, Innovation and Regional Engagement.’ Thisis the phrase that summarizes the objectives ofthe University of Ulster and was derived throughinstitution-wide consultation in the past academicyear. All three parts are highly relevant to researchand, together with the specific core objective to‘undertake excellent research in selected areas of activity’,make it clear that research is, and will continue to be,a highly prized activity of the University. When our 17 Research Institutes were establishedin the 2004-05 academic year those staff colleagueswith research outputs of the highest quality were designated as members. Overtime the number of members has increased, and the research resources ofthe University are increasingly focussed on meeting their needs. Additionallymechanisms have been put in place across all institutes to ensure the targetedsupport of colleagues at earlier stages in research careers who have the potentialto emerge as significant researchers in their own right. Our Research Instituteswill be supported to achieve longevity and establish a reputation amongst externalpeers, research funders and research users. This first Annual Report documents a significant body of work much of which isinternationally significant. As a reader, you may be a member of another researchinstitution, perhaps seeking to collaborate with UU, or perhaps you are a graduate,or soon-to-be graduate, considering postgraduate research as a starting-point inyour career, or perhaps you are involved in the private sector. You may even havebeen responsible for funding some of the research, or you are seeking solutions orexpertise to solve a problem. Whatever your perspective, I hope that the materialcontained in this Annual Report will be useful and informative. The precise workunderway in an institute may change with time, as will the Institute’s membership, and annual reports will be one mechanism through which this evolution will betracked.I commend each colleague whose achievements are documented in this reportfor the excellence of her/his work and I assure every reader of the University’scontinuing commitment to supporting the achievement of excellence.Professor Bernie Hannigan3

2. FOREWORD BY THERESEARCH INSTITUTE DIRECTOR“Psychology now heads the University league table inobtaining research council money”This year has been an important one for our research institute, and I would liketo take this opportunity to highlight a number of developments and significantachievements by Institute staff. One of the most important indicators of a healthyresearch environment is its ability to attract new staff. We have been fortunateto recruit five young research active staff to our Magee campus who will takeup post this summer: Dr Edel Ennis, Dr Elizabeth Simpson, Dr Adele McKinney,Dr Michael Gordon and Dr Andrea Campbell. These appointments combinedwith permanent posts for Karen Kirby and Dr Anne Tracey will strengthen ourresearch capacity. Our postgraduate numbers continue to grow steadily with newMasters programmes swelling these numbers. These young researchers contributestrongly to our research environment and the work of our research groups. The Peace and Conflict group has been strengthened by the addition of threeexperienced researchers Professor Gillian Robinson, Director of INCORE andProfessor Owen Hargie and Dr David Dickson from the School of Communication.Their addition significantly strengthens our multidisciplinary approach and jointwork with colleagues in the group is already underway.Work is underway on our SRIF 3 upgrade of experimental facilities, which willsee new laboratory facilities and equipment in human experimental psychologysupporting the work of our Health Psychology, Peace and Conflict and BehaviouralNeuroscience groups. The movement of staff this summer from our Jordanstowncampus to the Magee and Coleraine campuses, while a painful transition forcolleagues, will complete psychology’s reorganisation onto two campuses. Thisreorganisation has placed an additional burden on research active staff, and Iwould like to pay tribute to those staff on the Coleraine and Magee campuseswho have kept research alive while teaching large numbers of students. The Institute has worked hard to make grant money a key research objective forall research staff. I am pleased to report that Psychology now heads the Universityleague table in obtaining research council money. This is an excellent achievementand is driven by our three research group leaders Professor Brendan Bunting,Professor Ed Cairns and Professor Julian Leslie who continue to lead by examplein attracting research funding. Professor Gillian Robinson’s recent 3.4 million ESRCaward, should help us top the league table again in 2007- well done Gillian!Professor Maurice StringerDirector of Psychology Research Institute4
