It includes schemes run byHousing Associations, as well as onesrun by the Council.If you apply to move to shelteredhousing, an employee of the Council orone of the Housing Associations willarrange to visit you. They will be ableto tell you more about shelteredhousing, about the choice of differentschemes and other options that mightbetter suit your needs. You may also beable to apply for shelteredaccommodation in other West LondonBoroughs under a scheme calledLocata.They will also complete a form torecord your current needs, which willbe put to the Special Needs Panel toconsider. The panel is made up ofrepresentatives from the ShelteredHousing Management Team and theOccupational Therapy Department whogive professional advice to Housingstaff on whether shelteredaccommodation is appropriate to meetthe individual needs of each applicant.How to use the bookletOn the back of this booklet there is amap of the London Borough ofHounslow showing the location of allthe schemes. Each scheme has beengiven a number, and the key to themap shows the name of each schemeand the number given to it.How much rent will I pay?The charge for rent varies betweenschemes, but is about £40 - £50 perweek and is reviewed each year. Youmay be able to get help with payingsome or all of the rent by claimingHousing Benefit. In addition to the rentyou will have to pay for the supportservices you receive from the ShelteredScheme Manager and the communityalarm scheme called ‘support charge’,you may be able to get help with thepayment of all or part of the supportcharge from the ‘Fairer Charging team’.Please note that Council Tax ischarged separately for the selfcontained1 and 2 bedroom flats in ourschemes.How long will I wait?How long you wait can vary from a fewmonths to several years. It depends onthe priority you have been given andhow many other people are waiting forthe same schemes as you have chosen.We have shown the number ofvacancies we expect for each scheme inthe course of a year, based on thenumber of vacancies we have had overthe last couple of years. Often thenumber of people waiting is far greaterthan the number of vacancies, whichmay mean a very long wait. You areunlikely to be successful in a bid for themost popular schemes unless you havea very high priority. The person whovisits you will be able to advise you onwhich schemes to choose if you want aquicker offer, and which schemes arevery popular and therefore have longwaits.The role of the SchemeManagerMost of the sheltered schemes have afull-time resident Scheme Manager.They work a 36 hour week over 5 daysin every week. They do not work onSundays and have every other SaturdayWho is eligible?You are eligible to applyfor Sheltered Housing ifyou live in the LondonBorough of Hounslowand are 60 years of ageor over and requirehousing related support.If you live outside theLondon Borough ofHounslow but your localcouncil is a member ofthe Locata Scheme, youwill be able to bid forproperties using thatScheme.If you live in any othercouncil area at themoment, please contactyour local council torequest a nomination tothis borough via theH.O.M.E.S. Hounslow Housing Strategy and ServicesVery ShelteredSchemesThere are 2 such schemesin the London Borough ofHounslow, which have amember of staff on duty24 hours a day, 7 days aweek, offering a higherlevel of assistance fortenants who are morefrail. Applications forhousing to these schemesare made in the sameway as for our generalsheltered housingschemes.or a day during the week off too.When the Scheme Manager is on leave,a Scheme Manager from a nearby unitwill do the daily round. If the SchemeManager is ill or away from the schemefor any other reason, LinklineCommunity Support Wardens cover thescheme instead.The schemes that do not have a fulltimeresident Scheme Manager arecovered by Linkline Community SupportWardens permanently.The Scheme Manager is available attheir own scheme or their pairedscheme, from 9 - 12 noon daily.Availability at other times is arrangedfor the requirements of each scheme.The Scheme Manager is also availablefor emergencies whenever they are inthe building, except on their days off.The Scheme Manager visits tenantsdaily and checks on their general wellbeing.They may need to contact thetenant’s GP, family or Social Services orother organisations if the tenant needsassistance. The Scheme Manager willalso meet with individual tenants toidentify their support needs andprovide a support plan which will bereviewed every six months. The SchemeManager may provide extra assistancefor a temporary period if a tenant is illor recently returned home fromhospital. This extra help may includeshopping, collecting the tenant’spension, advising on or completingforms, etc.The Scheme Manager alsoencourages the use of the communalfacilities and promotes social eventsaccording to the wishes of the tenantsof the scheme. General events includecoffee mornings, bingo evenings, videoscreenings, chair aerobics and eveningsuppers with entertainment, but thesevary considerably from scheme toscheme.Communal laundry facilitiesAll sheltered housing schemes havecommunal laundries for the use of thetenants. The laundries have washers &driers and are free of charge to tenants.The laundries are open during the day,but hours may be restricted to enableHome Carers to do laundry for tenantswho have high care needs.Guest roomsSome sheltered schemes have GuestRoom facilities. This accommodationvaries from small rooms with washingfacilities to self-contained flats. Thecharges also vary accordingly.Guest rooms are for occasional useby visitors to tenants of shelteredschemes, who cannot stop over in thetenant’s own flat. No booking will bemade for longer than 2 weeks. Someschemes do not have Guest Roomfacilities, so Scheme Managers of otherschemes will try and assist colleagueswho have a tenant needing a GuestRoom for a visitor.Pet policyNo dogs are allowed in any LondonBorough of Hounslow managedsheltered schemes. If you already havea cat, please check with the SchemeManager to see if it is possible for youto take the cat with you. The decisionwill be made by the Scheme Managerhaving taken into account the views ofthe existing tenants and the layout ofthe scheme.Housing Associations operate theirown policies and you should check thiswith those organisations direct.2
