Minor Football ChampionshipValley Rovers Minor footballers played Bantry in thePremier 2 football championship in Kilmichael todaySunday March 29th at 3 pm. They say goals win gamesand this was the case today with Bantry getting 2 ineach half to finish the winners on a score line of Bantry4 goals and 9 points to Valley Rovers 12 points. Bantrywon the toss and played with the aid of a very strongwind in the first half. Bantry opened the scoring with apoint from a free in the 2nd minute followed with apoint from play in the 5th minute. Valleys then startedto get on the ball and got the next 3 scores with WilliamHurley kicking a point in the 9th minute followed by apoint each from Pa Hurley and Adam Settini in the 10thand 15th minute both from play. For the next 14minutes Bantry dominated and kicked 3 points 2 fromfrees and 1 from play. They followed this up with 2goals in the 21st and 29th minute to give them a 7 pointlead coming up to half time. Just before the break PaHurley kicked 2 points from play to leave us trailingBantry by 5 points at the break. After the break andwith the aid of the wind we got some good possessionand kicked 3 points 1 from Chris O Leary and 2 from PaHurley to leave just 2 points between the teams with 12minutes of the 2nd half gone. Over the next 12 minutesBantry kicked 3 points all from close range frees whichshows the pressure our defence were under. Valleys didreply with 2 points from play kicked by Pa Hurley andFergal Lyons. Bantry finished the stronger team kicking2 goals and a point to a single point for Valley’s kickedby Bill Casey. This loss means we go into the losersround in mid July with the more difficult route to followto get to the ¼ final. The remaining Roversscore came from the boot of Jack Murphy in the 26thminute. The visitors kicked 2 from play and 1 free totrail the home side 0-4 to 0-3 at half time.The visitors drew level with a point from play in the32nd minute but from then on the home side tookcontrol of this game. Great defensive play and excellentwork rate from the forwards saw the Rovers kick 6points from play with the visitors only other scorecoming from a free. Fiachra Lynch and John Cottrell hada point each inside the first 10 minutes of the secondhalf. Wing back Darragh Crowley got on the score sheetwith a fine point to put 2 between the teams on 45minutes. With the midfield pairing controlling the gameand the forwards combining well Cottrell kicked hisfifth point of the game from a Jack Murphy pass. Under 8’sJunior HurlingLast Tuesday night Valley Rovers Junior Hurlers took onBallymartle in the South East Junior Hurling league. Onthe night Ballymartle proved too strong for Valleys andran out comprehensive winners. It was there first hurling game thisyear and they showed some good hurling skills. It was aclose match with a final score line of 1-6 to 6 points. Weshowed with great team work what can be achieved withmore work. Playing against the wind in the first half valleyswere under pressure from the throw in. Sliabh Rua racedinto 1-1 lead after five mins. Valleys eventually came togrips with the elements and stormed back into the matchscoring 2-3 without reply.Leading 2-4 to 1-2 at half time the Valleys upped thetempo in the second half. Playing some great football theValley created chance after chance but were unable toconvert them. The game was always in the balance withthe Valleys defence playing some great football, Valleyseventually winning on a score line of 3-4 to 2-3.U10 HurlingOur u10 hurlers travelled to Belgooly to take on nearneighbours Sliabh Rua in their first hurling match of theyear. The conditions weren't ideal for hurling with somevery strong winds but this didn't deter both teams fromserving up an entertaining hours hurling. Our ladsperformed very well and some of the training they havedone at the ball wall has helped improve their strikingfrom the hand. Valleys lost the toss and played against a strongbreeze in the first half allowing Ballincollig build up alead in the first half. OnSunday morning we had 2 under 11 teams who played6 games and won most of their games, and again in theafternoon our under 9s, playing in their first indoorblitz, were also amazing, winning one, loosing one anda draw. The teams played Sliabh Rua, Courcey Rovers,Carrigaline, Passage, Ballinhassig and Tracton.
