WVDP Phase 1 CSAP10.6.3 Sample ShippingAll environmental samples collected during the project will be shipped no later than 48 to 72hours after the time of collection. The latter time of 72 hours may be necessary if the samples arecollected on a Friday and have to be shipped on a Monday via commercial courier. During thetime period between collection and shipment, all samples will be stored in a secure area. Allcoolers containing environmental samples will be shipped overnight to the laboratory via FederalExpress, similar courier, or laboratory courier.10.7 Investigation-Derived WasteThe field activities described in this plan will generate Investigation-Derived Waste (IDW)materials. These materials generally will consist of soil, sludge, water, and spent personalprotective equipment (PPE) resulting from sampling and associated project premises activities. When accumulated, these materials must be managed appropriately to minimize the exposure andrisks to human health and the environment while adhering to applicable regulatory requirements.IDW will be managed and disposed of consistent with DOE waste management procedures. Theobjective of this section is to establish specific management practices for the handling andsubsequent disposition of these materials. The IDW includes all materials generated during project performance that cannot be effectivelyreused, recycled, or decontaminated in the field. It consists of materials that could potentiallypose a risk to human health and the environment (e.g., sampling and decontamination wastes) andalso materials that have little potential to pose risk to human health and the environment (e.g.,sanitary solid wastes). Two types of IDW will be generated during the implementation of fieldactivities: indigenous and non-indigenous. Indigenous IDW expected to be generated duringCSAP activities will primarily be soils or soil-like material. Non-indigenous IDW expected to begenerated includes decontamination fluid/water and miscellaneous trash, including PPE. Whenaccumulated, the media will be managed appropriately to minimize exposure and risks to humanhealth and the environment while adhering to applicable regulatory requirements. In some instances, it may be appropriate to return IDW to its original location; an example of thiswould be returning trenched soils to their trench after characterization work at a particularlocation is complete. In other cases, returning IDW to its original location is not an option. IDWminimization is a goal; for each field activity that is expected to generate IDW, the field samplingRev. 1 77
