The balance will be distributed here locally to F.R.I.E.N.D.S of Broomfield, Glory Community, and toOperation TBI Freedom to assist local veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries.We'll be canvassing at (2) King Soopers, (2) Safeway, and (2) Wal-Mart locations and asking for volunteers towork two-hour shifts. Refreshments and snacks will be provided to make this an enjoyable and educationalopportunity for our youth and families to experience the benefits of extending a helping hand to those lessfortunate. HOLY FATHER’SGENERAL AUDIENCEDear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!This Sunday we continue reading the 10 chaptersof the Evangelist Luke. The passage today is that onMartha and Mary. Who are these two women? Marthaand Mary, sisters of Lazarus, are the relatives andfaithful disciples of the Lord, who lived in Bethany.St Luke describes them in this way: Mary, at the feetof Jesus, “listened to his teaching,” while Martha wasburdened with much serving (cf. Lk 10:39-40). Bothwelcome the Lord on his brief visit, but they do sodifferently. Mary sets herself at the feet of Jesus tolisten but Martha lets herself become absorbed inpreparing everything, and so much so that she says toJesus: “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left meto serve alone? Tell her then to help me” (v. 40). AndJesus answers scolding her sweetly: “Martha, Martha,you are anxious and worried about many things. Thereis need of only one thing” (v. 41).What does Jesus mean? What is this one thing that weneed? First of all, it is important to understand that thisis not about two contradictory attitudes: listening to theword of the Lord, contemplation, and practical serviceto our neighbour. These are not two attitudes opposedto one another, but, on the contrary, they are twoessential aspects in our Christian life; aspects that cannever be separated, but are lived out in profound unityand harmony. Why then was Martha scolded, even ifkindly, by Jesus? Because she considered only what shewas doing to be essential; she was too absorbed andworried by the things “to do.” For a Christian, worksof service and charity are never detached from theprinciple of all our action: that is, listening to the Wordof the Lord, to be — like Mary — at the feet of Jesus,with the attitude of a disciple. And that is why Marthawas scolded.POPE FRANCISST. PETER'S SQUARESUNDAY, JULY 21, 2013ANGELUSIn our Christian life too, dear brothers and sisters, mayprayer and action always be deeply united. A prayerthat does not lead you to practical action for yourbrother — the poor, the sick, those in need of help,a brother in difficulty — is a sterile and incompleteprayer. But, in the same way, when ecclesial serviceis attentive only to doing, things gain in importance,functions, structures, and we forget the centrality ofChrist. When time is not set aside for dialogue withhim in prayer, we risk serving ourselves and not Godpresent in our needy brother and sister. St. Benedictsums up the kind of life indicated for his monks intwo words: ora et labora, pray and work. It is fromcontemplation, from a strong friendship with the Lordthat the capacity is born in us to live and to bring thelove of God, his mercy, his tenderness, to others. Andalso our work with brothers in need, our charitableworks of mercy, lead us to the Lord, because it is in theneedy brother and sister that we see the Lord Himself.Let us ask the Virgin Mary, the Mother of listening andof service, to teach us to meditate in our hearts on theWord of her Son, to pray faithfully, to be ever moreattentive in practical ways to the needs of our brothersand sisters.
