Gadkari launches ‘WaterManagement Cell’ of BJPAtwo-day seminar on‘Water ResourcesManagement in India -Challenges Ahead’ was held inNew Delhi on February 18 and19 to deliberate on adoptation ofinnovative irrigation practices toovercome future challenges. The seminar was organisedby Water Management Cell of theBJP, which was launched by BJPNational President Shri NitinGadkari on the same day. In hisinaugural speech BJP NationalPresident Shri Nitin Gadkarisaid, “It is a very importantsubject and with yourdiscussions and deliberations, Iam sure we will get a finitedirection to work in some Stateson this front. If there was anybiggest mistake that was doneon the planning side in thiscountry then it is not givingenough importance to water. Wealways talk about industrialgrowth rate but not aboutagriculture growth rate.”He added, “When BJP comesto power at the Center, we willgive top most priority to fix thismistake of neglecting the watermanagement and agriculturegrowth rate. Currently, irrigationsector is in the states list. Withlimited resources available attheir disposal, States are not ableto do enough allocation to thiscrucial irrigation sector. This isleading to migration of ruralpopulation to urban areas whichled to increase in urban poverty, increase in commodity prices etc.If ‘water and irrigation’ subjectsare moved into the concurrentlist, then the central governmentcan help in financing the stateson this crucial front.”He advised BJP ruled Stategovernments to introduce thewater conservation in theelementary, middle and highereducation schools. “InMaharashtra, Nagpurmunicipality is won by BJP. Weare planning to give 24 hours ofwater supply to the citizens ofNagpur. With the same amountof water as available before, weare planning to get thisaccomplished. We can supplycity’s sewage water to the powerplant near Nagpur and utilizethe good waters that are beingutilized by the power plant fordrinking and irrigationpurposes. Thus, management ofwater is an art and we can getthe best out of it propermanagement,” he added. Heasked the cell to suggestappropriate inter connectivityprojects and water conservationmethods and come up with ablue print so that these can beimplemented in the BJP rulingstates right away and also canbe implemented by the NDAGovernment when it comes topower at the Center.BJP National Vice PresidentMarch 1-15, 2011 22
