As we have been told, John the Baptist, the last and greatest prophet ofthe Old Testament, was tasked to preparethe way for it the coming of theLord. Towards this end he proclaim abaptism of repentance. John was callingthe people of Israel to renewal andconversion. Responding to his call, numeruos people, honestly acknowledgingtheir sinfulness, came out ofthe region of Galilee and Judea andsteamed towards the Jordan to takepart in his brand of baptism.John chose the Jordan, as the site ofhis baptizing, ministry because of itshistoric and prophetic significance.Back in the Book of Joshua, the Jordanwas the river which the Israelitescrossed over at the height of their exodusfrom Egypt. They had to cross itbefore entering the promised land.Israel had sinned so much and brokenthe Covenant and so John wascalling the people to come to the Jordanto confess their sins, re-cross itthrough their baptism, and re-enterthe promised land. John’s calling thepeople to be baptized was a call to anew beginning or to start from scratchall over again as a nation.Today’s Gospel tells of the Baptismofour Lord Jesus. As we are told, one ofthose who line up at the Jordan forbaptism by John surprisingly and interestinglyis no other than Jesus. Atfirst blush we can say that Jesus hasalso sins of His own since the baptismjust denotes that He is also a sinnerlike any other person who takes partin John’s baptism of repentance.Jesus, however, has no sin whatsoever. That He is without sin is testifiedto by St. Paul and other apostlesin their letters. Because He is sinless,Jesus is, therefore, in no needof this rite of moralipurification. Inanother Gospel of John, recognizingwho Jesus is, even refuses to baptizeHim, telling Him he should instead bebaptized by Him. So what all this baptismof the Lord means?Jesus baptism shows the humility ofGod. You are God and yet you submitto this kind of baptism in whichordinary and sinful people take part.It is said that when Jesus went to theJordan to be baptized by John, Hewent down into the world of sinners. He wants to show that He is one ofus, a human being like us.Jesus does not care what people sayof Him to see Him lining up with sinnersat the Jordan. He will most likelyTHE BAPTISM____________OF JESUSSTEVE C. FERNANDEZ, Reflectionsbe branded a sinner for him to go tothe Jordan but it does not dissuadeHim from being baptized to show thatHe is truly a man. Yes, God camedown from heaven to be one of us toexperience hunger, pain, humiliation, suffering, etc.Has a head of family come down tobecome a servant? Has chief executiveof office or company come downto become a janitor or to do somemenial job? Of course none. OnlyGod has done so to be a man.By undergoing this baptism togetherwith these people at the Jordan, Jesuswants to show that God is not far fromhis people. He is near us. By receivingthis baptism, Jesus identifies Himselfwith us let alone with our humannature. His baptism shows His out near withsinners and His sympathy with them.He takes side with them. God walkswith sinners that He may lead themeventually to their salvation. BecauseGod loves us, we have all the chancesfor salvation. The Jews were expecting a powerful, conquering and royal Messiah tocome. The Savior, however, has decidedto appear in humbleness andpowerlessness by His lowly birth andto do a humble act by His Baptism. Itis because humility is important inour life and to our salvation.Only the humble can recognize thatwhat they have, all that they havecome from God and so they havenothing to boast or nor to be proudof. Because everthing that we have isnot ours, it has to be used properly, wisely, and for His glory. It is just the humble who could seeGod in His humbleness and imitateHim. He has decided to appear in humilityso that it is only the humblewho could recognize Him and whocould be saved. “Blessed are thehumbles for theirs is the kingdom ofGod,” He said. A humble person recognizesthat there is one supreme beingwhose will he must allow to ruleand guide his life.By His Baptism, moreover, Jesusteaches the essence of christian spirituality.Humiliation first then comesglorification. For after His baptism, heavens opens and as it opens the HolySpirit in the bodily form of a dovecomes down mightily upon Him.Then the voice of the Father in heavenis heard saying: “This is my own belovedSon with whom I am, pleased.“Sufferng, dying, and death first andthen resurrection by God. This is thepascals mystery. For a student to succeed,he must, make sacrifices. Forthis nation to prosper, our leadersmust learn to die to their corrupt andsinful ways. For anything to end toglory, pain and sacrifice have to beexpressed along the way.The Lord’s baptism, which annointsHim as king as signified by the descentof the Holy Spirit, should remind usof our baptism which makes uschristians which means annointedones. We are christians because we areannointed with the same Spirit whichJesus was. We are given the power ofthe Holy Spirit so we can imitateChrist. Our baptism, which initiates us intothe faith, is a call to discipleship, a callto follow Christ. St. Paul in his letterto the Corinthians says: “You havejust been baptized, have been baptizeinto the body of Christ. Because weare body of Christ, we share in thekingly, priestly, and prophetic missionof Christ. Just as Christ was faithfulto His mission, we too have to be soto our baptismal calling.January 10- 16, 20103

We pray with a great time-shift in today’sGospel. Thirty years have passed sincelast-Sunday’s Gospel wherein the Magiwere visiting the Holy Family. We pray forour personal coming to maturity; with us,it has taken longer than a week. We canpray also for an increase in our desire topray “with” and less to pray “for”.Jesus heard the ordaining words of hisbeing the “beloved” and we long to hearthose words from around us and withinus. Who we listen to does determine whatwe hear. We pray to hear, to listen andto believe the message and the Messenger. He walks us prayerfully through hisvery public life of love.REFLECTION. We hear of a certain“Servant” in the First Reading of our liturgy.Isaiah, within the fifteen chaptersforty through fifty-five, compiles theBook of Consolation. This prophet writesoften of Israel as a “servant”. More definitely,Isaiah, within these chapters, proclaims four special Servant Songsdescribing a particular person. We hearthe First Song in which, in the words ofthe Lord, he calls to and points out thisone “servant”.This person has a specific mission whichinvolves his going beyond the boundariesof Israel, bringing a “light”. This“light” will bring “justice” to the earth aswell as recovery of sight and freedom forthose in darkness and prison. This “Servant”will be gentle and not like other4 January 10- 16, 2010Jesus’ Baptismprophets who work themselves up into afeverish frenzy resulting in shouting andconvulsions. He will be gentle of speechand action. He will be upheld by the Lordand loved explicitly so as to bring “justice”between God and God’s creation. While it is a text announcing a special personfor that time of hope, it has a taste ofthe characteristics of the coming Messiah. The Spirit of God will be upon and withinhim and his identity will be known by thepeople of Israel through his actions. The Gospel is one more “Annunciation”scene. As with Gabriel’s announcing toMary that she would give birth to a sonwho will be born of the Holy Spirit, Jesusis announced as the “beloved son” by thesame Spirit. John has baptized the crowdand Jesus fulfills his ritual tradition. Then, while praying, there is a new formof baptism specifying him as the “belovedservant”. In a sense, it is more of a“confirmation” or even more, an “ordination”.This is not the moment whenJesus takes upon himself a “Divine Nature”,but an announcement of his comingof age in our salvational history. Bythe overshadowing by the Spirit he becameincarnate. By the “over-hovering”of the same Spirit he becomes incorporated, that is embracing himself as “servant-Messiah”of God and for all God’speople. The same Spirit “incarnates”and “Incorporates” that family inLuke’s account of Pentecost in The Actsof the Apostles. With our being baptized, we enterthis same coming of age, this samebeing part of Jesus’ salvific embrace ofGod’s mission of returning creation to itsproper state of praise and order. Thework of the Spirit is bringing about fleshand family. The Spirit overshadowed andconceived a fleshly presence and a familyof faith. We are likewise inspirited totake flesh anew and our mission of extendingGod’s family in Christ. We have been celebrating these pastweeks, the Word becoming flesh. Mary’sflesh was more than it seemed; her bodywas more than others knew. In time hercousin, the shepherds; the Magi came toreverence that which was different fromwhat it had seemed to be. That WordMade Flesh was transformed too, frombeing what it seemed to be seen for whathe was, the “Beloved Son”.Ah, here’s the rub. My flesh and yourflesh have been immersed in the baptismalexperience of Jesus. His bodyand person were united by God to uniteus within ourselves and incorporate uswith and for each other. It is a “rub”because, like Jesus, we are baptized, confirmed and all are ordained to gopublic. Jesus had to leave his prayingalone, leave the riverbank, leave theassociation with John and begin hiswalk towards Jerusalem. We in our turnmust leave our privacy our pews, ourcomfort zone, our well-planned,surpriseless ways. The “rub” is that ourflesh, our persons, our presences aremuch more than they seem. We are soclose to ourselves though, that what“seems” is deceptive. As Jesus heardhis new name, he moved from “seems”to “is”, as did Mary of Nazareth. The“rub” is that we have to rub against thesame spirits of this world which confrontedJesus from shortly after his“baptism” to shortly before he baptizedthe earth with his blood. Our being Baptized and Confirmed dedicatesus into the “Listeningness” of Jesus. As he listened to the mysterious God andto the bewildering voices of humanitywithin and around Him, by these samesacraments we plunge into the waters of“Discernment”. To be guided by the spiritdoes not mean our being subtracted fromthe attractive voices which sure cansound “divine”. Our ears were blest atour baptisms to begin this process oflearning what God sounds like and whatour egos, our flesh, and our worldlinesstoo, sound like. Jesus learned to listento it all with receptivity and discretion. We will spend these next weeks of theLiturgical Year listening so that we mighthear, and hearing, we might live what wecome to believe.“This is he of whom John said, ‘I haveseen and have given witness that thisis the Son of God.” Jn. 1, 32
