Friday 26 th <strong>April</strong>444 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS -10AMAuctioneer’s: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Alan Webber 07967 718048Steers to £1330 Heifers to £1115A good entry of grazing cattle met with a ‘red hot’ trade with fierce competition from first to last! Only a few forwardcattle on offer were topped by R Saffin of Drewsteignton with his 26 month old Simmental steer at £1330 followedclosely by smart 22 month Limousin steers for Robert Bater of Umberleigh. Similar aged Limousin steers for RobertReddaway of Okehampton fetched £1275 a head whilst Andrew Peters of Talaton and AR Gifford & Son of Totnes bothsaw £1265 a piece for their 20-22 month old Limousin & British Blue steers. The native breeds, best of the day was JamiePalmer of Totnes with good shaped 2 year old Hereford steers at £1165 & £1160 apiece. The heifer section saw AndrewPeters top with £1115 with a well-shaped Limousin, and three quarter meat Devon heifers for J Shapland of Crediton at£1050 & £980. Denis Pratt of Whimple reached £1040 with 22 month old Charolais heifers with good, similar agedBlonde x heifers at £1020 for JM Vincent of Plymouth. Younger sorts were equally in demand with £1040 for 16 monthold Angus steers from RJ Merchant of Moretonhampstead, £1035 for Andrew Peters 15 month old Charolais steers,£1025 for 13 month old Blonde x steers for Peter Hendy of Plymouth and £925 for both Stuart Dagworthy of Exmouthand Mike Hutchings of Chudleigh with 13-14 month old South Devon steers. The monthly sale of organic store cattle sawa flying trade for a good entry from MH Bulled of Poughill with nearly all of their consignment of 30 cattle beingpurchased by registered organic buyers. Amongst the notable prices was £900 for a grand 13 month British Blue steer,£960 for a 22 month old Aberdeen Angus steer and £890 for a similar aged Angus heifer.A quality entry of show cattle from Culm Valley YFC saw the Champion beast, an 11 month old Limousin steer fromCharlotte Alford top £1390, Maggie Palmer’s 17 month Limousin x steer which won first prize for best animal out of adairy cow made £855. Overall Novice Champion was Sunny Selway with her young British Blue heifer making £770,Kevin Davis made £630 & £600 for his 9 month old British Blue heifer & steer respectively.Note: Vendors are reminded that all Cattle Entry Forms must include a TB Test Date.45 CALVES - 10.30AMAuctioneer: Mark Davis 07773 371774A limited entry of calves saw a lift in the trade and manymore calves could have been sold to advantage! Top ofthe day was £400 for a three week old Charolais x bull fromFrank Pike of Cullompton. There were plenty of buyers readyto give £350+ for the best continentals and WE NEEDMORE to satisfy demand. South Devon bulls sold to £365for Mr CE Mudge of Tavistock who also sold a 16 day old SouthDevon bull very well at £265. Young Aberdeen Angus bulls soldto a very strong trade with the best looking a tremendoustrade at £210 for Steve Loud of Colyton. Heifers saw a muchimproved strong trade with the best to £300 twice for twosweet 16 day old British Blue Heifers from Mr FJ Luxmore ofCrediton. Others to £275 for Andrew Reed of Cullompton,who also sold Limousin Heifers to £220. Young fresh calves sold to £155 for an 18 day old Holstein from Mr F Luxmore of Crediton. A 26 day oldBritish Friesian from Derek Burrough of Yarcombe sold at £135. A superb run of well-shaped 10 & 11 month old Blonde x stirksfrom Michael Scott of Drewsteignton saw the best race away to £840 apiece for 10 month old steers with others at £820& £800. Similar aged heifers from the same home reached £800 & £795. Elsewhere, Johnny Vanstone of Tavistock saw£755 for his smart 10 month old Limousin steer while Kenny Watson of Postbridge (first time vendor in the market)reached £660 with super 6 month old South Devon steers. Malcolm Harris of Kingsbridge offered a pretty pen of 5-7month old Limousin steers which fetched £655 apiece.Store cattle vendors are reminded where pedigree native breed bulls have been used, please provide the registeredpedigree name of the sire by writing the pedigree name clearly on the entry form.1516 SHEEP - 11AMAuctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 31870146 ORPHAN LAMBSA similar number on offer met with strong demand for the best, to a top of £40 apiece for eight strong Suffolk x Mulesfrom Ross & Emma Sizmur of Okehampton. Followed by £30 from George Pring and £26 from Edward Pring bothmembers of Whimple & Broadclyst YFC. £16 on behalf of Derek Harris of Dartmouth with the majority of young lambstrading between £6-£10. Average £14.80 is down just 28 pence.523 STORE HOGGS & 55 LAMBSTop of £95.50 was achieved by a pair of ram hoggs from Messrs Bicton College of Budleigh Salterton, £93 for a pen fromK Ellis of Chudleigh with Stuart Crang of Thorverton at £86.50 & £82.50. CM Gordon of Silverton reached £85 and thebest of a run from Spencer Elworthy of Barnstaple achieved £77. Overall average of £57.80 for the hoggs is up slightly onlast week. The first of the new season stores saw a run of 55 good 35kg Dorset’s from Dan Partridge of Dunsford reach£74.50 and averaged £73.15.65 GRAZING EWES£109.50 was top for a Texel ram from Messrs Bicton College, with a Charollais from Nigel Haley of Buckfastleigh at£107.50 and the best of the ewes to £104.50 on behalf of Laura Vallis of Cullompton and £99 for Gemma Coles of CulmValley YFC. Average of £60.45 is similar to the previous few weeks.22 BREEDING EWES/HOGGSBest of the empty breeding ewes to £110 and £89 from Whimple & Broadclyst YFC. Pure Suffolk ewe hoggs cutting theirteeth to £101 from Mike Waycott of Ashburton and Suffolk x ewe hoggs to £90 from Martin Partridge of Christow.805 COUPLES (315 EWES with 490 LAMBS)The highlight of the sale was the consignments of two cracking runs of coupleson behalf of Whimple & Broadclyst YFC and Culm Valley YFC who dominatedthe top prices. Top of £250 was achieved by James Westcott of Culm Valleywith four Suffolk x ewes with eight nice lambs at foot (£83.33/life) withanother such pen at £225 or £75/life. Also at £225 was Mark Snell of CulmValley with a Devon & Cornwall Longwool double. Whimple & Broadclyst soldtheir best to £225 as well, firstly for a double from Katie Bowditch andsecondly for a pair of good doubles from Edward Pring. Emily Ackland (also ofWhimple) sold her best double to £212, the same value as Martin Westcott ofCulm Valley’s four with seven. Harvey Pile of Culm Valley sold four with eightat £210, the same money was called for the best single from Rachel Down ofWhimple & Broadclyst (£105/life). Others from Matthew Tidball at £205 withplenty more YFC doubles and singles around the £200 mark. Congratulations to all YFC exhibitors on the high level ofstockmanship and presentation. In the commercial pens, top was £170 achieved by Michael Vooght of Northlew withflock age Dorset doubles, closely followed by Mike Waycott with Suffolk x FM doubles at £168 and SP Thompson ofDawlish with full & broken mouth doubles at £156. More hogg couples coming forward, meeting with increasing demand.Best NC Mule singles to £162 from Robert Partridge of Teignmouth and some nice Suffolk x hogg singles sold to £140 &£132 on behalf of Dan Hutchings of Barnstaple. Of the hill bred outfits, BM Herdwick singles reached £68 on behalf ofChris Stacey of Buckfastleigh and Welshie singles to £60 and doubles to £70 from Dartmouth Farming Ltd. Overallaverage of £56.28 a head or £148.03 an outfit.


MONTHLY CATALOGUED SALE OF SUCKLER COWS & CALVES – 12 NOON (Following Stirks)Auctioneer: Mark Davis 07773 371774A small entry for our first monthly Suckler Cow sale saw a super trade for all types forward. Top of the day was £1220for a 2006 born South Devon cross cow with herd <strong>April</strong> born Simmental heifer calf at foot from Messrs Adcock &Wotton of Moretonhampstead who also sold a 2010 born Hereford cow with an <strong>April</strong> born Angus heifer calf. PhillipMears of Chagford sold a 2002 born Charolais cow with her September born Steer calf well at £1120. Several other plainolder cows sold well between £850-£910 and more could have easily been sold.Next monthly sale – Friday 31st May 2013PIGS – 10.30AMAuctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133What a superb day, a wonderful entry of 29 cull sows saw the best at £203 forthe pick of a smart trio from Messrs Dowrich Farms Ltd of Crediton. Close upwas Andrew Freemantle at £190 (x2) with others at £186, £179 & £174 fromthe same farm. Richard & Vicky Gibbins saw their best at £183 with others at£176 and the best medium weights at £168. A super entry of 70 prime pigssaw the best trade ever seen at any <strong>Kivells</strong> auction with a wonderful line up of10 quality pairs of butchers prime pigs presented by members of Culm ValleyYFC. It was a real credit to the members for putting on such a tremendousshow of pigs and they were all rewarded for their efforts with a fantastic tradewith the Overall Champion selling at a wonderful £405 on behalf ofDaniel Stevens of Blackborough whose parents Nick & Heather verygenerously donated the proceeds of Daniel’s pig to The Laura Persey Trust which was purchased by Stillmans of Taunton.Mark Snell of Kentisbeare saw his pen at £180 with James Westcott at £179 and Daniel Stevens at £175. Well doneCulm Valley YFC! It wasn’t just the show pigs that were in demand, Richard & Vicky Gibbins topped at £149 for a penof 4 with others at £139 & £138 and their consignment of 16 averaging £141. In the store pig pens much more interestpushed the young stores to £46 again from Dowrich Farms Ltd with others from the same good farm at £40. MessrsChadwick of Ashton saw their best pen at £47 whilst in the breeding pens; Tom Stevens of Culm Valley YFC saw his sow& litter reach £305.
