Letters to the EditorDear TKD Talk,I visited Nepal earlier this year to meetmy wife’s extended family. My wife is aNew Zealander <strong>of</strong> Nepalese descent andthis was my first opportunity to go toNepal to meet my new relatives, visitamazing temples, see some wonderfulviews, and train in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. I hadjust graded to 1 st dan and was lookingforward to training.It took me three weeks to find them, butITF is alive and well in Nepal. In just sixshort years Nepal ITF has amassed 10,000members and has successfully becomepart <strong>of</strong> the school system. That’s not tosay their path was easy – at one pointthey were arrested for a couple <strong>of</strong> hoursfor practising the Chang-Hon style <strong>of</strong><strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>.Last year their founding member, Mr RajuThapa IV dan, left for America, leavingthe organisation in the sound hands <strong>of</strong>internationally experienced third dans.<strong>The</strong> president, Mr Krisna Bahadur BalalIII dan, works full time promoting the art.His team does an excellent job maintainingand developing ITF in Nepal.Nepal ITF practitioners train with spirit,power and a lot more kihaps. And boy,these guys love doing the splits. Everyonecan do the splits. I trained with themfive days a week for a month. <strong>The</strong>ytaught me to use my hips and abdominalsto increase power, while emphasisingbalance so that you don’t stumble after akick. I was able to help them with patterns.If you visit Nepal you will be verywarmly welcomed, both inside and outsidethe dojang.I gave four newspaper interviews andwas even on the Channel Nepal satelliteTV sports show viewed by 52 countries.We went by bus on a picnic to Nagarkot,a hilltop overlooking the HimalayanRanges. We took lunch with us – a wholealive Nepalese Sheep. We cooked, ate,drank and danced that Saturday afternoonaway.Nepal is a safe place for foreigners to visit.You will find a people who are always4Mr Hitchins with members <strong>of</strong> Nepal ITFready to laugh and to dance. This is inspite <strong>of</strong> an unstable political situation andseven years <strong>of</strong> civil war. <strong>The</strong>re are dailynewspaper reports <strong>of</strong> soldiers, policemenand innocent people being killed, withhuman rights violations committed byboth sides. Nepal ITF stands as a pillar<strong>of</strong> light against this background <strong>of</strong> darkness,showing people that there is anotherway.I encourage all <strong>of</strong> you to take opportunitiesto train internationally. Ididn’t want my kids go grow up withouta strong male involvement in their youngvulnerable lives.When my eldest boy Jake was six, I tookhim along to an ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> club inGisborne. We were impressed. After thefirst class we were hooked, and soonbecame part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> family(club spirit).I am now a blue stripe and my son, nownine, is a green belt. We worked hard forour belts, and we are proud <strong>of</strong> ourachievement.Year 2004, my second son Daniel beginshis journey, and not far after, Nicholastoo. My point is, my children and I are aLetterslot more confident and optimistic aboutour future, and the <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> lifestylestands out a mile. <strong>The</strong> children are respectful,determined and have a sense <strong>of</strong>achievement and belonging.A huge thank you to our instructor, MrKim Bull, for understanding our situation,changing our lives for the better, anddemanding our best effort in all we do.Also for making us understand that ourdedication to our instructor, our club andthe ITF organisation is so important andshould be recognised, respected andsupported. We got to do a lot <strong>of</strong> new thingsand met a lot <strong>of</strong> new people, and we definitelygot up at a new time in the morning,6:00am! At camp we did some <strong>of</strong> thebest training sessions <strong>of</strong> our lives! <strong>The</strong>instructors were really great too. Clairebroke her first ever wooden board andwe did a lot <strong>of</strong> really fun bag work. <strong>The</strong>adults were awesome too! <strong>The</strong>y cookedall our meals and made sure everythingwas sweet. Mr de Koster was our medicalperson, so if you got hurt you justwent straight to him - so he helped us alot! <strong>The</strong> instructors showed us how t<strong>of</strong>ly, well almost, with our jumping kicks!But the best thing was meeting new people.Now, a lot <strong>of</strong> those people have becomereally good friends <strong>of</strong> mine, likeHayley Rosser, Paige Moki; and evensome <strong>of</strong> the boys were cool too!We also learnt the meaning <strong>of</strong> teamworkand our team was so good at it that wewon first place out <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> the otherteams at camp. We had an awesome timeat camp and we can’t wait to go againnext year.We really appreciated the hard work allthe adults put into the camp, especiallyour own instructors, Mr and Mrs Dunn,who didn’t even have any <strong>of</strong> their ownkids there. And we were really gratefulthat the instructors were so good! Wehad the best time ever! And finally, ourheartfelt thanks to Tauranga <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> for the awesome and friendly eventthat it was. Development Camp 2004: Like No OtherCover Storyby Carolyn Faithfull, 2nd gupAfter plane delays and the best part <strong>of</strong>the day travelling, I arrived at Camp Adairin Hunua, Auckland and venue for the2004 Development Camp. Arriving earlyI had plenty <strong>of</strong> time to observe CampAdair’s facilities: a high ropes course, achilly looking river and bush coveredhills. I wondered how these would beutilised over the weekend. Shortly MrsOlsen, the camp coordinator arrived,followed by Mr McPhail and the otherstudents. Excitedly we gathered roundas the programme was pinned up in everybunkroom. <strong>The</strong> high ropes course wasn’tmentioned (phew!).reinforce this with positive statements.<strong>The</strong> training session began by warmingup our body-temperatures, followed byjoint loosening movements, somedynamic stretching and then gentleexercises similar to the main part <strong>of</strong> thetraining. <strong>The</strong> most important lessonswere utilising the largest muscles in thebody effectively– the gluteus musclegroup, and proper technique whenjumping.and goal setting side <strong>of</strong> things and themountains turned out to bepsychological ones, not the real onesbehind the camp!Mr Rimmer’s advanced kicking was nextfor the morning. When Mr Rimmerinformed us we would be breaking threeboards in the air before training was over,I think a few people may have seriouslydoubted this (remember: believe you aregood!). However, by the end <strong>of</strong> the class,after working up gradually, I thinkeveryone thought the breaks weredefinitely achievable.<strong>The</strong> camp <strong>of</strong>ficially opened at 7pm, withMr McPhail explaining the camp rules:1) No complaining about anything.2) Address your seniors as ‘Sir’ or‘Ma’am’ in every sentence.3) Always believe you are good andSaturday morning started with a 5.30amwake-up for a training session entitled,‘<strong>The</strong> Mountains We Climb – Motivationand Goal Setting’. Told to arrive in dobokand running shoes, I was eyeing thosebush covered hills and wondering howsteep they really were. However, thesession focused more on the motivationMr Patterson taught patterns beforelunch, in ‘General Choi style’. Cover Storypieces in an informative manner. Thiswas followed by an opportunity for theclass to practise each pattern, andhopefully make the comments stick.This was followed by several innovativesparring drills making use <strong>of</strong> the ‘halfstep’and an interesting discussion ontactics. We discovered the mostimportant elements <strong>of</strong> sparring are:timing, focus, speed and power, in thatorder.Lunch was scrumptious, and the highstandard <strong>of</strong> cooking was maintainedthroughout the weekend. I would like tothank the cooks very much for theirdelectable efforts!<strong>The</strong> evening session was taken by MrBanicevich, who made it into a veryentertaining competition. It was a veryinformative class, and if you think that‘right walking stance low forearmguarding block’ is a lengthy name for atechnique, then try it’s real name, ‘forwardstepping right walking stance outerforearm low outward obverse side block’!<strong>The</strong> camp finished with spectaculardemonstrations <strong>of</strong> specialty techniquesby Mr van Roon and some usefulassisted and resisted training drills tostrengthen those jumping muscles. Everytime Mr McPhail announced the end <strong>of</strong>each class I was disappointed, “But waitI want to learn more sir….!” <strong>The</strong> campended with a certificate presentation andPower breaking commenced after lunchand had the walls shaking, with MrPatterson demonstrating all thetournament power techniques. <strong>The</strong> mostimpressive demo was a straight punch,which sent Mr Harvey flying backwardabout three meters. Our own breakinghad Mr Uhn Coradine impressingeveryone with his three board sidepiercing kick.I must admit I was a little apprehensiveabout the sparring training. However,within the first fifteen minutes Mr Nivenhad exercised everyone into submission,with a work-out designed to exert the sameamount <strong>of</strong> energy as a sparring match.No sooner had my head hit the pillowthat night, it was breakfast again, and theday started <strong>of</strong>f with Mr Pellow teachingself-defence. I had never met Mr Pellowbefore and I must admit he was a littlescary. Unsurprisingly perhaps, he kepttelling us to use the techniques you learnin class just as you are taught them todefend yourself. For example, if someonegrabs your wrist, you could relax andeasily release their hand or punch in theusual fashion by pulling the grabbedhand back to the hip, thereby pullingthem <strong>of</strong>f balance and into your attack.Mr Raukura ensuring we had setchallenging goals within a realistictimeframe.Thank you to all the instructors thatparticipated over the weekend. Composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>by Paul McPhail, VI danDirector <strong>of</strong> Techniques<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> is composed <strong>of</strong> five mainphysical components:1. Fundamental movements2. Patterns3. Sparring4. Conditioning5. Self defence<strong>The</strong>se five phases are closely related andone flows into the other and continueson, blending together so that eventuallyone acquires all the essential skills in<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>.Fundamental movementsFundamental movements refer to thelearning, practice and perfection <strong>of</strong> allthe basic movements 1in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. Inthe club situation these can be practisedtogether as line work, individually, orwith partners. This area <strong>of</strong> trainingcannot be over emphasised and aninstructor will usually devote time to itevery session. As in any sport, unlessyou have mastered the basic stances,balance and mechanics <strong>of</strong> themovements, your progress in the moreadvanced aspects will be limited.3 5Technical TipsFundamental exercises can sometimes beboring for students, as there must beplenty <strong>of</strong> repetition to get improvement.It is a challenge for the instructor to comeup with ways to make it varied andinteresting.PatternsWith knowledge <strong>of</strong> the basic fundamentalmovements, the 2first pattern is learnedat 9th gup level: Chon-Ji Tul. In patterns,we use these movements in hypotheticalsituations against several opponents.Patterns help to further develop power,rhythm and balance. Many people enjoypatterns as they are challenging tomaster and enjoyable to perform. <strong>The</strong>reare 24 patterns to learn in all.SparringFrom here the student begins to applythe skills obtained from fundamentalmovements and patterns to actualmoving opponents.Sparring starts with the pre-arrangedformats (3-, 2- and 1-step sparring), sostudents can practice slowly anddeliberately, mastering stances, distanceand focus as it applies to the opponent.Free sparring teaches the students toapply the techniques in a nonprearrangedexercise through theoretical,powerful movements that areaesthetically pleasing while avoiding“chicken fighting”.ConditioningCollaterally with sparring, students mustdevelop their bodies and toughen theirattacking and 4blocking tools so they areable to deliver maximum damage in actualcombat.This conditioning includes generalfitness work, bag and pad drills andforging exercises. Students also beginto learn breaking techniques to test theirtechnique and the condition <strong>of</strong> theirattacking tools.Self defenceSelf defence refers to the practicalapplication <strong>of</strong> techniques learned fromthe previous phases. Here we learn howto apply what we know in realisticsituations. You may, for example, havegood side kick and can use it in sparring,but don’t know how to apply the kick ina self defence situation. This is wherewe practice these skills.<strong>The</strong> effectiveness <strong>of</strong> your techniques inself defence, will in part depend on howgood your fundamental movements are,ie your power, speed, balance andreflexes. Techniques from the Ladies TeamsFree Sparringby Lipi Shukla, I dan and Alix Bartholemew, I dan, Nibun ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>Lipi Shukla is a member <strong>of</strong> the team competing in the Junior World Championships in Italy this year. Alix Bartholemew was amember <strong>of</strong> the New Zealand team who competed at the World Championships in Poland last year.Defence against front leg side piercing kickWhy I like this technique.I find this technique works well against opponents taller thanme, or people who have longer legs and throw side kicks tostop me charging. This technique allows me to take a hit in anon-scoring area and throw my opponent <strong>of</strong>f balance, so I canget in and score.Defence against turning kickSide kick makes contact with arm, not body.As the side kick makes contact, lift the arm and push the kicksideways.Ready position from same side facing.As the opponent performs a turning kick, step forward with therear leg, punching the rear hand, ensuring your body changesfacing and stance.This ensures that the turning kick strikes the back, which is anon-scoring area, and the punch strikes a scoring area.Throw a punch with the <strong>of</strong>f hand, while stepping through withthe rear leg.This technique enables a smaller person to get inside <strong>of</strong> the legreach <strong>of</strong> a taller person. Timing is very important with thistechnique, and enables people who are heavier on their feet tomove faster. Incorrect method for walking stance middle punch. <strong>The</strong> fist travelsupward, and power is not transferred into the target.that the forefist should travel in a straightline to the target. If you are blocking thetibia with a forearm low block, it is nosurprise that you must cross on top atshoulder height, and block downwardand outward to the target.Most movements are either half facing,full facing or side facing. <strong>The</strong> tool iscentre line, chest line or shoulder line. Itis important to know these things.You must understand where eachmovement begins, the intermediateposition through which it passes, thefinished position, and the trajectory yourbody and each limb travels to get fromstart to finish.It helps to practise a new movementslowly, to get the feel <strong>of</strong> it, before you tryit out. Sometimes it helps to practise onelimb at a time, then put them together.For example, the twin forearm block iseasier to master if you try one hand, thenthe other, then both together.3. How does it work?With an understanding <strong>of</strong> what atechnique is for and how it should work,it is time to do it. As Mr Lowe teachesduring the Instructors’ Course, you needto practise new skills in closed way,progressing to an open way. That is, youpractise them in controlled situations,progressing to uncontrolled situations:a. spot techniqueb. line workc. target workd. pre-arranged exercisese. free exercises.General Choi always told us we shouldfirst learn every technique as a spottechnique. From the appropriate readyposition, perform the technique to theright, return to readyposition, perform thetechnique to the left,return to readyposition, and continue(vice versa fordefence). This is thebest time for aninstructor to correcttechnique, because it iseasier to keep out <strong>of</strong>the path <strong>of</strong> otherstudents, and otherstudents need not waitwhile the instructorcorrects one.Once you are performing the movementcorrectly, you practise the technique inline work. In this way, you repeat themovement to train your muscles toremember the correct method.It is not until this point that General Choiadvocated learning the pattern – after youhave performed every new technique inthe pattern to this level. However, tomaster the technique, and develop thebest patterns, each movement must bedeveloped as an open skill. This isreinforced by the Composition <strong>of</strong><strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> (which Mr McPhaildiscusses in Technical Tips on page 8).When you are comfortable using thetechnique alone, it is time to perform itagainst a target. <strong>The</strong> technique can beperformed in focus exercises using apartner or focus pad, and in powerexercises using an air shield or bag.<strong>The</strong>se exercises utilise a stationarytarget.<strong>The</strong> next step is to practise the techniquewith a partner in pre-arranged exercises.<strong>The</strong>se include all forms <strong>of</strong> step sparring(and result in great techniques forgradings), and exercises such as MrLowe’s “You!” game.An application <strong>of</strong> left walking stanceforearm low blockFeature ArticleFinally, you should try to utilise thetechnique in free sparring. Initially, trysemi-free sparring to consciously use thetechnique in certain situations.Ultimately, the goal is to unconsciouslyuse the technique in free sparring. What istarget? Show me.” If you know what atechnique is called, you know the tool. Ifyou know what it is for, you know thetarget. President’s CornerExecutive Updateby Evan Davidson<strong>ITFNZ</strong> PresidentFirstly, I wish to acknowledge and giveremembrance to our <strong>Taekwon</strong>-D<strong>of</strong>ounder, General Choi Hong Hi, may herest in peace.2003 was a fantastic, rewarding and challengingyear for our organisation. Wegained over 800 new members. It is interestingto note that just over half <strong>of</strong> ourcurrent membership is female. I know <strong>of</strong>no other Martial Art in New Zealand thatcan boast that statistic. Well done andthank-you to all our club instructors.Master Michael Daher, from Sydney,Australia, attended the National Seminarat Massey University and also gradedsix <strong>of</strong> our senior members. From this seminarthe Oceania ITF was established.Auckland will be host to the 2004 Oceaniatournament.<strong>The</strong> success <strong>of</strong> our Senior Team at theWorld Champs in Poland bought with ita higher national pr<strong>of</strong>ile for <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>and increased media awareness. ITF<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> in New Zealand finally receivedwell-deserved recognition.Along with this, Sport and RecreationNew Zealand (SPARC - formerly theHillary Commission) have granted <strong>ITFNZ</strong>recognition status as a National SportsOrganisation. For many years nowEvan DavidsonPresident <strong>of</strong> <strong>ITFNZ</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong><strong>ITFNZ</strong> has been working towards thisgoal and our thanks go to Mr Greg Skinnerfor his personal input and help inbringing this about.<strong>The</strong> National Champs in Dunedin turnedout to be a grand event, with outsidemedia interest at an all time high. Primetime news covered some results and TV3featured an aspect <strong>of</strong> the champs on their‘Sportzah’ program. Thank you to KrisHerbison, Hayden Breese and his crewfor organising a great spectacle.<strong>The</strong> Executive Committee and Directors<strong>of</strong> Sub-Committees show good leadership,and teamwork. <strong>The</strong>y have a desireto see <strong>ITFNZ</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the leading martialarts organisations in New Zealand. Havingsaid that, it is the quality <strong>of</strong> our ClubInstructors and their assistants who ensureour membership numbers keep growingand it is they who maintain the highstandard expected <strong>of</strong> ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>practitioners in New Zealand. Keep upthe excellent work.It was an honour for <strong>ITFNZ</strong>, in 2003, tohost a visit by the new President <strong>of</strong> the<strong>International</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> Federation,Master Tran Trieu Quan, 8th Dan. Heheld meetings with the Executive, seniorinstructors and our Junior Team. As always anything youwould like to have published on these pages can besent to tkdtalk@itfnz.org.nz<strong>The</strong> first ever National Junior Camp was held in November last year. It was open to kids below black belt and14 years or under. It was an awesome event, and there is an <strong>of</strong>ficial report on page 23, but I wanted to reporton some <strong>of</strong> the more unusual but memorable moments <strong>of</strong> the camp.Memorable Moment #1: Everyone had to wear a coloured peg forthe entire weekend. Each team had a different colour. <strong>The</strong> Team 5 boyswere especially fond <strong>of</strong> their BRIGHT PINK pegs. If you couldn’t findyour peg, you had to pay a penalty. Which brings me to............But pink doesn;tmatch my eyes Sir!Twinkle, twinkle littlestar, I wish my pegwould not go far.Memorable Moment #2: Usually the penalty for losingyour peg was to stand up in front <strong>of</strong> everyone and SING.(Lost pegs seemed to have the ability to find Mr Brownreally quickly. Perhaps they were homing pegs?) Why isit that most <strong>of</strong> the people who lost their pegs couldn’tsing very well?MemorableMoment #4:<strong>The</strong> most important questionanswered at the campwas....................... How do you geta giraffe into a refrigerator?(If you want to know the answer,ask someone who went tothe camp!)Would the giraffego in head or feetfirst?So was there any TKD at this camp?:Absolutely. Heaps <strong>of</strong> it in fact. <strong>The</strong>rewas power breaking with boards goingeverywhere, awesome team sparringwhere White Belt David could meet RedBelt Goliath and win, 70 children all sparring each other at the same time inthe same hall, and the same 70 children doing flying kicks all over the place.Patterns were done , and there were special sessions taken by past WorldJunior Team members as well. Kyle Caldwell and Regan Diggleman had them allspellbound as they demonstrated their specialty kick techniques. <strong>The</strong> weatherwas lousy and it didn’t matter a bit, the venue was excellent and the kids hada blast. Thanks to everyone for a really great weekend. <strong>The</strong>re is another campthis year, November 19th-21st, so if you didn’t make it to the first one, makesure you go to the second! Be there, or be square!Memorable Moment #3: Each team was given a little egg person to look afterfor the whole weekend. One didn’t even make it past the first night, and hadmysteriously evolved into an apple person by Sunday lunchtime. Two others werebut a shell <strong>of</strong> their former selves at the end <strong>of</strong> the camp. Something to do withbeing dropped from a great height perhaps? Not all the eggs had it hard :Two <strong>of</strong>them spent the weekend in the lap <strong>of</strong> luxury, wrapped up cosy and warm in theirteams belongings; I am sure they were even read bedtime stories to keep theiryolks in place.Memorable Moments #5, #6 and #7: Some <strong>of</strong> themore unusual goings on were having to turn one <strong>of</strong> yourteam members into a mummmy, with only the help <strong>of</strong> a roll<strong>of</strong> toilet paper, Mr Rimmer’s maze <strong>of</strong> string in the bushand the skits all the teams performed on the Sundayafternoon. Feature ArticleKapiti Coast-to-Coast Tour 22-29 February 2004by Steve Coburn, 3 rd gup, Kapiti CoastDay OneWell, the day had arrived. We were finallyleaving on the much-anticipated coastto-coastadventure: 5.45am and we wereall together; the long journey to Aucklandhad begun. Did I say ‘long journey’? –Helena’s 108 ways to get to know youbetter questionnaire had us so wrappedup in each other we hardly noticed thedrive at all!After settling into the motor-camp weheaded out to train with Miss JeanetteJoe at Devonport <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. MissJoe’s approach to training was mostlyspeed and sparring related, it certainlyworked up a sweat on us in no time flat!A lot <strong>of</strong> the exercises involved quite fancyfootwork which took some getting usedto. Devonport students looked reallysharp which inspired me to train more onquick stance changes and kicking. Afterall that hard work it was nice to finishwith a comprehensive stretching sessionand something different – handstands!Dinner afterwards was at Takapuna withJeanette and some <strong>of</strong> her students; a verypleasant evening spent in good company.Day TwoUp early, Helena and I set <strong>of</strong>f on a lightjog before dawn, ending up with patternsat a volcanic crater as the sun rose – whatan awesome way to start a day we wouldbe spending in the city.We did the Auckland city tour with visitsto the Markets, Sky Tower, Queen Streetand the Viaduct Basin, then straight <strong>of</strong>fto Papakura to visit Mr Paul McPhail. Iwas immediately impressed with MrMcPhail’s welcoming manner and themeticulous presentation <strong>of</strong> the Papakura<strong>Do</strong>-Jang – a special touch was the noticeboardwhich had information from theKapiti Coast website introducing ourvisit to the club.18Trilford’s AngelsOur training at Papakura was very wellrounded with attention given to mostaspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>, especially linework and patterns. Another benefit totraining at Mr McPhail’s club was theopportunity to see several outstandingstudents performing in ways that westrive towards – well done Papakura!Day ThreeSuperman SteveAfter my morning run we headed upcountry towards Russell, ournorthernmost destination. <strong>The</strong> tedium<strong>of</strong> a long drive was alleviated by Brooke’sgame <strong>of</strong> Truth, Dare or Command, whichresulted in some hilarious revelations andthe need to perform dares <strong>of</strong> variouskinds. Luckily no one knew us in the farnorth so the embarrassment was lessenedsomewhat!Mrs Carol Harvey visited us at our motorcamp before training was due to start – awelcoming touch that was to set the tonefor our entire visit to Kororareka<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. Mrs Harvey was happy forMr Trilford to instruct the class so, asusual, it was ‘full steam ahead!’<strong>The</strong> enthusiasm and spirit <strong>of</strong> the clubwere amazing, with a genuine desire tolearn and enjoy <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. Full marksto Mrs Harvey and her students for anenjoyable and welcoming visit.Helena WebsterOur evening was spent at our cabinenjoying another <strong>of</strong> Brooke’s games –where do teenagers learn this stuff? - Agame called “I have never…” whichinvolved lots <strong>of</strong> hilarity and thediscovery that what goes on tourdefinitely stays on tour!Day FourOur morning in Russell saw Helena andme <strong>of</strong>f for a run over the hill to a lovelybeach where we practised patterns anddid <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> until the sun came up;what a beautiful part <strong>of</strong> the country! <strong>The</strong>nwe were <strong>of</strong>f on another long trip, this timedown to Te Awamutu with a stop atVictoria Park Markets to buy lunch andDirty <strong>Do</strong>g sunglasses. I think most <strong>of</strong> usfelt a bit seedy from the night before asthe journey was mostly spent dozing.While waiting for training time to comearound I probably spent an hour on themotel trampoline – I just love having allthat airtime to play with!Mr Evan Davidson’s club at Te Awamutuis held at a purpose-built dojang, sharedwith a Karate club. It may seem funny tonon-martial artists but we all remarked onthe floor, which was sanded floorboards,an awesome surface for <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. MrDavidson’s class was quite physical withparticular attention to techniques;especially some from higher up the colourbelt syllabus. I especially liked havingMr Davidson’s assistant instructorwalking around during class as he couldgive advice personally to improve our<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> without interfering with thewhole session. Dinner was enjoyedafterwards with Mr Davidson and some<strong>of</strong> his students at a café in Te Awamutu.Day FiveWe enjoyed a sleep-in today as the pacewas beginning to take its toll! We packedup and got on our way down StateHighway 3 heading for New Plymouth.<strong>The</strong> pass-the-parcel game we played hadR18 questions on the wrappers, whichwe had to answer truthfully, but after thelast few days we already knew practicallyeverything about each other!Arriving early in New Plymouth we settledinto our cabins and headed out to theshops, passing time until we went out toTaranaki <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>.Mr Neill Livingstone gave us a brilliantwarm up in the form <strong>of</strong> a yoga session. Itwas just what our sore muscles neededand was actually very hard work. I wouldhave liked to remember these techniquesbut there was just too much information– maybe when Mr Livingstone brings outa DVD I’ll buy it!Mr Livingstone’s passion and excitementTKD Talk, 2004 Issue 1


for <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> shone throughout hisclass – especially during his instructionon the many and varied ways <strong>of</strong>delivering vertical kicks – a mostenjoyable session. We followed thistraining with a visit to the mineral pools,then dinner in town and ending in a gettogetheron the beach where Dylancompleted one <strong>of</strong> his dares – all goodfun.Day SixOnce again we ran before dawn,performing patterns on the beach as thesun came up – leaving pattern diagramsin the smooth sand for morning walkersto puzzle over. After packing up we leftthe camp and went surfing. We hadorganised board and wet-suit hire soheaded out and had fun – even managingto stand up a few times!Lunchtime saw us at Stratford in a caféwith none other than Billy Connolly onhis “Too Old to Die Young” tour.Plucking up their courage Dylan andHelena arranged for a photo session withhim which turned into a patternsdemonstration! Billy was a nice guy whoseemed genuinely interested in what wewere doing – I just hope we don’t becomethe butt <strong>of</strong> his Scottish humour in hisnext show!A mad rush saw us arriving just in timefor training with Mr Lawrence Mantjikaat Milson <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> where we werewarmly greeted and made thoroughlywelcome. What inspirational training! Ifeel this training was one where the wholewas more than the sum <strong>of</strong> individuals,we all just ‘clicked’ and <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> wasthe winner <strong>of</strong> the day! Thanks were givenfrom all <strong>of</strong> the coast-to-coast team to MrTrilford for all his efforts in organisingour tour- an unexpectedly emotionalmoment.Thank you Mr Mantjika and Milson<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> club members, we will besure to visit again.Day SevenHelena and I travelled home due to workand family commitments so were unableto train for the first day <strong>of</strong> Mr DaveBallard’s ‘Three Clubs Train as One’camp, although we managed to arrive laterin the afternoon; everyone at the campwas fizzing – it had obviously been anenjoyable day despite the pouring rain!<strong>The</strong> question and answer sessionthrough the evening proved entertaining,Demonstrating pattern Won Hyo for Mr Connollyas was the midnight feast enjoyed by theKapiti junior students. Sleep was finallygained in the early hours despite the bestefforts <strong>of</strong> a certain cabin!Day EightWe were awoken early by the sweet,gentle(!) sounds <strong>of</strong> pots being struckand were all <strong>of</strong>f out for our morningsession, most for a beach training withMr Trilford, but a few headed <strong>of</strong>f for arun in the dunes.<strong>The</strong> gang withcomedy legendBilly ConnollyFeature ArticleBack in dobok we split into three groups<strong>of</strong> which my group was instructed by MrDaniel Motu, who taught us break-fallingtechniques – great! Break falling is part<strong>of</strong> my next grading (to 2nd gup) so thetiming was perfect – I came away withplenty <strong>of</strong> information which I now canput into some practice.<strong>The</strong> camp finished <strong>of</strong>f with a speed andfitness time-trial out on the field whichwas hard work and good fun.So, that’s it, the end <strong>of</strong> the coast-to-coastroad trip – amazing. I would like to thankall <strong>of</strong> the instructors who welcomed usinto their dojang, and all the students whotrained with us. Thank you to the Kapitistudents who provided such pleasurablecompany. Feature ArticleComparison <strong>of</strong> ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> and WTF <strong>Taekwon</strong>doby Paul McPhail, VI danDirector <strong>of</strong> Techniques<strong>The</strong> history<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> founded and named in 1955 by GeneralChoi Hong Hi. ITF formed in 1966 with 9 membercountries, Gen. Choi President.Gen. Choi moved HQ to Canada in 1973 then laterAustria where it has been ever since.<strong>The</strong> techniquesGeneral Choi created 24 patterns (called Tul) that werepublished in the book “<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> <strong>The</strong> Art <strong>of</strong> Self-Defence,” in 1965. <strong>The</strong> Tuls they practice were createdby General Choi, each one having been named for someperson or concept significant to Korean history.<strong>The</strong> method <strong>of</strong> performing individual techniques, aswell as the techniques themselves are quite differentfrom WTF. Techniques start and finish in differentpositions and are executed using a sine-wave motion.<strong>The</strong> terminologyGen. Choi named all 3500 ITF techniques with bothEnglish and Korean terminology.<strong>The</strong> competition rulesITF competition includes four equally importantindividual events: patterns, free sparring, specialtechniques and power. <strong>The</strong>re is also a team event.In ITF free sparring, students wear foam rubber handand foot pads aimed, primarily, at minimizing damageto their opponents. Students are allowed to kick andpunch to both the head and body <strong>of</strong> their opponent.Illegal targets are the back, back <strong>of</strong> the head, andanywhere below the belt. Contact is restricted to “touchcontact”.<strong>The</strong> uniform<strong>The</strong> ITF uniform is white and zips up in the centre.Black belt holders have a black stripe on the bottom <strong>of</strong>the jacket, 4th dans and above have stripes down thesleeves and pants.<strong>The</strong> ranking systemITF system <strong>of</strong> rank is made up <strong>of</strong> 10 grades and 9degrees <strong>of</strong> black belt. <strong>The</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Master is reservedfor 7th degree and above only.<strong>The</strong> philosophyITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> follows the tenets <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>and philosophy <strong>of</strong> General Choi Hong Hi, founder <strong>of</strong><strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. <strong>The</strong>re is a heavy emphasis on theoryand philosophy, patterns and technical perfection, aswell as the sporting aspects.20“Turning kick”“Round Kick”South Korea set up the WTF in 1973.Spelled as one word, “taekwondo”, rather thanthe ITF spelling “<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>”.WTF has gone through several different sets<strong>of</strong> forms which they now call, “Poom-Se”. <strong>The</strong>original Poom-Se practiced by the WTF wereKi-Cho one through three, and Pal-Gwe onethrough eight. Most WTF schools no longerpractice these, choosing instead to practiceTae-Kook (Tae-Guek) one through eight forstudents who have not yet earned their blackbelts. At the black belt level, there exists anentirely different set <strong>of</strong> Poom-Se.WTF do not use a sine-wave motion.<strong>The</strong> terminology in WTF is completelydifferent from the ITF, both in English andKorean.WTF have only sparring events.In WTF free sparring, students wear thickchest padding similar in appearance to,although much lighter than, a bullet pro<strong>of</strong>vest. <strong>The</strong>y also wear foam rubber head gear.WTF competitors do not typically wearanything on their hands and punching to theface is illegal. New Requirements for Black BeltsNational Newsby Paul McPhail, VI dan - Director <strong>of</strong> Techniques<strong>The</strong> following changes have been made following the Technical Committee seminar held in November 2003. Most requirementsare effective immediately, but some flexibility will be observed throughout 2004.Age limitsIn accordance with the ITF Bylaw, the age limit for grading to 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree have been removed (previously 9, 14½ and16½). Minimum age for promotion to 4th degree has been reduced from 19½ to 18 yearsCredit Point ChangesCredit points are now separated into “Attendance Credits” and “Contribution Credits”. Attendance Credits are gained byattending such things as <strong>ITFNZ</strong> tournaments, camps, seminars and other events outside <strong>of</strong> normal club trainings. ContributionCredits are gained by contributing to the organisation, by assisting with such things as umpiring, instructing or organisingevents.Those testing for 1st dan must accumulate 10 Attendance or Contribution Credit points since joining <strong>ITFNZ</strong>. Those testing for2nd dan must accumulate 5 Contribution Credits since their last grading. National Juniors Camp 2003by Gwyn Brown, II danCamp OrganiserOrganise a National Camp for 70 childrenunder 14 years <strong>of</strong> age and 20 adults.Sounds easy, right?Actually, it was! Thanks to the ThreeAmigos: Trudie, Shaun, and myself. Allwe had to do was hold lots <strong>of</strong> meetingsand decide who would be paying for allthe pizzas. About 10 meetings later, everythingstarted to come together.<strong>The</strong> big day finally arrived.<strong>The</strong> weather gods were unkind, to saythe least. It rained pretty much the wholeweekend, despite our sacrificial <strong>of</strong>ferings.Did this dampen anyone’s spirits? No,not one little bit.Shaun and I got <strong>of</strong>f to a great start. Wemanaged to get all the gear, food, equipment,and ourselves to the venue withfive minutes to spare, while Trudie hadto finish work. Personally I think she gotthe better end <strong>of</strong> the deal.<strong>The</strong>n the children started to arrive andjust like the rain, they first trickled in, thenflooded in, and then trickled in again. By8:30, most had arrived and we began withintroductions, the weekend format and<strong>of</strong> course rules for all the participants.Carlos from Tauranga demonstratesflying reverse turning kick<strong>The</strong> children were buzzing, and soon hadorganised themselves with few problems.Our ages ranged from Georgia who was5, to Jason who was 15. I was sceptical atfirst that a 5 year old would cope at thecamp, however her Dad was there withher and as it turned out, she was a verymature 5 year old and a joy to be around.Friday night was spent playing a few icebreakergames and organising the childreninto their teams. An early night wasplanned but as expected, we had to getthe boys up after lights out to point outRegan Diggelman in the way?Kyle Caldwell takes a shortcut.the benefits <strong>of</strong> doing countlesspush-ups.Saturday dawned bright and clear... atleast, I am sure somewhere above the rainand wind, it was bright and clear. Shaunand I woke the children up at 6am andhad them all exercising by 6:05, which hasto be a minor miracle in itself. Any parentwho wishes to know the secret <strong>of</strong> thismethod can contact me. All I will say is itinvolves several trash can lids, a largewater pistol, an even larger <strong>of</strong>f duty policeman,and several thinly veiled pushupthreats.After the usual morning routines we settledinto a day <strong>of</strong> hard training involvinglots <strong>of</strong> sparring, breaking, sparring, breaking,sparring and breaking. Our goal foreach child at the camp was to be able toachieve something they had never triedor thought possible before.Our special guests ran some <strong>of</strong> the mostinspiring and enthusiastic training sessionsimaginable. By the end <strong>of</strong> the firstday, every child had achieved our goal. You are all probably familiarwith this format, where the childrenhave all day to come up with an idea for ashow and present it to the judges. <strong>The</strong>rewere some great skits, some very funnyones, and everybody had a great time.<strong>The</strong>re had been no problems getting thechildren to bed on Saturday night. Wakingthem up on Sunday at 6am, however,was a little more difficult (although weagain managed to have them all assembledin the hall by 6:07am). <strong>The</strong>y werethen told to go back to bed, as therewould be no exercising that morning. Youshould have seen their faces!Participants at the campexperience the Game <strong>of</strong> SlimeSunday consisted <strong>of</strong> more training andthe activities the children loved: sparring,jumping, games, and lots <strong>of</strong> breaking. Wehad purchased over 150 boards for thecamp; next time we will buy more, andspend more time watching the sheer joyon each child’s face as they smashedthem to pieces.A big thanks to Trudie Malone andShaun Skedgwell and also to the manyparents and helpers for your assistanceto make the camp possible.We will be running this camp all overagain for 2004. <strong>The</strong> dates have yet to befinalised but it looks likely to be again atthe end <strong>of</strong> November, possibly the19 th – 21 st . Steve Pellow, V danby Mark Banicevich, IV danPapakuraMr Pellow probably has the mostinteresting training history <strong>of</strong> any <strong>ITFNZ</strong>instructor. It shows in his qualifications:V dan ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>, I dan Aikido, andinstructor <strong>of</strong> Balintawak and kickboxing.My first memory <strong>of</strong> Mr Pellow is from aseminar with General Choi Hong Hi in1991. He was a 3 rd dan black belt withfunny techniques; one <strong>of</strong> those Lim’sinstructors. Indeed, his mostembarrassing <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> moment washaving General Choi pull one <strong>of</strong> hispatterns to bits at that seminar, with hisold friend Paul McPhail looking on inobvious amusement.I also remember training for my firstdegree. Twice a week with Mr McPhail,and twice a week with Mr Pellow totoughen me up. Sparring sessions in asmall hall at the back <strong>of</strong> Papakura, full tocapacity with eight red and black belts.Pummelling each other. We hear a thump,and see Graeme Fleming raise himselffrom the floor. Mr Pellow (his opponent)stops the class and says, “Never duck aback kick. <strong>The</strong>y’re usually middle. Carryon.” (<strong>The</strong> back piercing kick is MrPellow’s favourite foot technique.Moving forwards, <strong>of</strong> course. As MrPellow says, “Is there any other way?”His favourite hand technique is theknifehand guarding block, as anyonewho has been to one <strong>of</strong> his self defenceseminars might guess.)To Mr Pellow, martial arts are all aboutself defence. Around 1993, he told me hisgoal is to ensure that his students candefend themselves if they are attacked,and he gave a recent successful example<strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> his female students. It is thisintent that drove him to ensure <strong>ITFNZ</strong>introduced a realistic self defencesyllabus to grade to 1 st dan, which we didin 1993.His techniques are realistic – he is one <strong>of</strong>the most dangerous men I know.Fortunately, he is also one <strong>of</strong> the nicest.In the beginningMr Pellow’s interest in the martial artsbegan as a kid watching David Carridinein the 1960s TV series “Kung Fu”. In1980, Mr Pellow visited an old friend inSydney, Kevin West. He accompanied hisfriend to a <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> class near theCentral Railway Station. A sessionwatching that, and Mr Pellow wanted tojoin.Soon after, a friend told Mr Pellow abouta new club in Papakura. His first sessionwas 30 September 1980 – in a smallnarrow room at the back <strong>of</strong> the PapakuraYMCA. <strong>The</strong> instructor, Olly Olsen,learned <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> under Master BSHaun, while stationed in Singapore withthe army. <strong>The</strong> club was affiliated to theSouth Pacific <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> Federation,under Master YK Yun. Training includedlots <strong>of</strong> press ups, kicks, punches, fitnesstraining and partner stretching.Six weeks later, Mr Pellow wore hisdobok for the first time at his firstgrading. It was held at the Otahuhudojang <strong>of</strong> Tere Maorikava. He wasgreeted by a smiling new 1 st dan namedMr Pellow as a green student,with Kevin West in 1981Rocky Rounthwaite. Mr Pellow also sawthe first blue belts he had seen: MarkRounthwaite, Rua Kaiou, and GavinRyan (Alan Gillon’s first instructor). MrPellow stood in the front line, right infront <strong>of</strong> Master Yun. He performed sajujirugi and Chon-Ji without error, andpassed his yellow belt.<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> skill begins to developAt green belt, Mr Pellow was teaching.He desperately wanted to learn more, sohe went along with a friend to a selfdefence course at night school. It turnedout to be a karate class, taught by a 1 stdan named Royce Lane. Classesconsisted <strong>of</strong> kicks, punches and ahundred miles <strong>of</strong> line work – as if to weedout the weak. “I get paid by thegovernment the same amount <strong>of</strong> money.It doesn’t matter to me if there are two <strong>of</strong>you or two hundred.”Mr Lane also <strong>of</strong>fered private tuition onSaturdays for $5, and Mr Pellow becamea regular at these tiring sessions. It wasInstructor Pr<strong>of</strong>ileironic to have the tenets <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>hammered home by a karate instructor!(Incidentally, Mr Lane was shot in thehead while working as a bodyguard inHong Kong a few years ago. Mr Pellowsays, “Royce being Royce, it failed to killhim” – he is still alive and well.)By late 1982, Mr Pellow was a red belt,but not <strong>of</strong> today’s standard. <strong>The</strong> club splitfrom Master Yun when he was red stripe.<strong>The</strong> club was discontent, but therewasn’t really anything else around.Mr Pellow’s martial arts career changeddramatically when he happened to meetThomas Tamakore, a black sash in KungFu under Henry Gibson, 2 nddan in<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> with Master Rhee, and aboxer. Mr Tamakore was 170cm, quietlyspoken, with skill and knowledge MrPellow hadn’t seen, and the speed,flexibility and cat-like agility <strong>of</strong> a 70kgathlete – except he was 120kg! He loveddemonstrations, and Mr Pellowperformed many with him. Ask Mr Pellowabout Mr Tamakore’s favourite break –it’s amazing!Mr Tamakore’s favourite saying was, “Iteach for reality.” His philosophy: thecolour <strong>of</strong> a belt means nothing – merely away to hold up one’s trousers. Mr Pellowsays, “<strong>The</strong> skill, methods and attitudeThomas taught me are with me in everyclass I teach to this day.” Soon after MrPellow transferred to his Mangere club,Mr Tamakore opened clubs atGreenmeadows, and later Papakura.Mr Tamakore split from Master Rhee andconducted his own, formal andceremonious, gradings. In March 1983,Mr Pellow regraded to blue belt, and hewas happier a good blue belt than a poorred belt. <strong>The</strong> grading included a surprisebreak – Mr Pellow’s first. A three boardreverse turning kick! <strong>The</strong> second attemptwas successful. Mr Tamakore liked to puthis students on the spot to see how theywould react – something Mr Pellowvowed to do to others as soon as he hadthe chance.Broadening his horizonsIn January 1984, Mr Pellow attended aweeklong Wing Chun Kung Fu trainingcamp in Australia, run by William Cheung.(Mr Pellow was so impressed, he attended24TKD Talk, 2004 Issue 1


again in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In 1986, MrPellow attended a second week <strong>of</strong>Escrima, Muay Thai and Jeet Kune <strong>Do</strong>with Dan Inosanto – Bruce Lee’s mostsenior student!)Mr Pellow and one other student gradedto 1 st dan on 12 June 1984 under a panel<strong>of</strong> Mr Tamakore, John Jarvis (a NewZealand pioneer <strong>of</strong> judo and karate), andKevin Tisch (a 3 rd dan student <strong>of</strong> WillieLim). It was a long hard night <strong>of</strong>everything <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>.In October 1984, Mr Tamakore wasinvolved in a car accident. He retired from<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> and returned to Australia,leaving Mr Pellow to teach the clubs atGreenmeadows and Papakura. In 1985,Mr Pellow withBill “Superfoot”WallaceAbove right: Mr Pellow with William Cheung(centre) and Willie LimBelow right: Alan Tromp, Mr Pellow, BobbyTaboada and Alan Gillon“<strong>The</strong> Karate Kid” hit cinemas, and everymartial arts club in the country hadstudents queued down the street andaround the corner. Mr Pellow contactedMr Tisch for help, and Mr Tisch gavehim a letter <strong>of</strong> introduction to Willie Lim.Mr Pellow travelled with a group to trainwith Mr Lim in Hamilton every Saturday.<strong>The</strong>re were <strong>of</strong>ten over 20 instructors andblack belts, plus gup students, at eachtraining. Classes were hard – old school.No sine wave, but effective. Mr Pellowhas fond memories <strong>of</strong> them.Mr Lim’s open minded approach totraining made it a highlight <strong>of</strong> Mr Pellow’s<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> career. He gave Mr Pellowthe opportunity to find his own truth, andto train with many martial arts legends <strong>of</strong>the 1970s and 1980s, about whom theywere reading in magazines: WilliamCheung (Wing Chun kung fu), Bill“Superfoot” Wallace (kickboxing), Benny“<strong>The</strong> Jet” Urquidez (kickboxing), FumioDemuria (7 th dan, karate), Remy Presas(modern Arnis), Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wally Jay (10 thdan, small circle jujutsu), George Dillman(8 th dan, karate), and Kwang Jo Choi (8 thdan, Mr Lim’s instructor). Neither werethese one <strong>of</strong>f experiences; Mr Pellowtrained with Wally Jay and GeorgeDillman in eight or more seminars eachover a four year period. Mr Lim calledthis “investing in yourself”.This may seem haphazard – training inso many styles – but many <strong>of</strong> theselegends trained together (although manywere masters in their own right), and theirseminars complemented each other. Forexample, William Cheung was a boyhoodfriend <strong>of</strong> Bruce Lee, and Wally Jay trainedextensively with Bruce Lee’s student DanInosanto, and together with Remy Presasand George Dillman.In 1987, Mr Lim introduced Mr Pellow toBalintawak instructor Bobby Taboada,who grunted, “You come next week.” <strong>The</strong>class followed Mr Lim’s <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>class, and lasted anything from 45minutes to two hours.In his limited English,he would say,“defence faster”, andtap students with hisstick. If a studentwas still too slow, hewould “tap harder”.He was pleased whenhe weeded the classdown to three or fourstudents, at whichpoint he warmed upa bit. After class, MrTaboada would walkInstructor Pr<strong>of</strong>ileaway without saying a word.Mr Taboada reminded Mr Pellow <strong>of</strong> MrTamakore: big, fast and very powerful,with a flamboyant manner and attitude.Four years later, Mr Lim and Mr Taboadamoved to the USA.In January 1989, Master Chai Sirisute(President <strong>of</strong> the US Thai BoxingAssociation) gave his first Muay Thaiseminar in New Zealand. Dan Inosantohad spoken highly <strong>of</strong> Master Chai, soMr Pellow couldn’t stay away. Mr Pellowhas trained with Master Chai onnumerous occasions since, and theyhave a friendly relationship. A few yearsago, Master Chai visited Mr Pellow athis work. Mr Pellow’s greeting was afriendly hug and the comment, “Oh,you’ve gotten fat!”, which broughtgiggles from Master Chai.A martial artistHumility is something Mr Pellow respectshighly in the best instructors. MasterChai once helped the New Zealandcontingent carry there bags to a camp insoaking rain. Wally Jay would greetstudents to his seminar with, “Hi, myname’s Wally. Thank you for coming tomy seminar.” <strong>The</strong>se two, Willie Lim,Bobby Taboada and Paul McPhail are MrPellow’s most admired martial artists.Mr Pellow’s advice to a new student?<strong>Do</strong>n’t quit; keep going, or you will regretit for the rest <strong>of</strong> you life. It is not all steadyprogression – it has its ups and downs.A good practitioner is not necessarily astar. Epson Under 18 Tournament Series WinnersChanthie ThachI didn’t know what toexpect at the under18s last year. <strong>The</strong> lasttime I competed was atthe 2002 Under 18s inAuckland North.Since then, I’vetrained hard and soon enough the 2003Under 18s was up and running. To behonest I have never placed in patterns inan Under 18’s before. So my goal was tocome somewhere, well, anywhere inpatterns. Twenty minutes later I was inthe finals! I missed out on 1 st but I got2 nd ! I have never got that far before.I gained my black belt in May, so my firstchallenge was to compete as a 1 st dan. Itwas tough, as I was up against peoplewho had recently represented NewZealand. But I got myself in the ring, headup high and did better than I expected.By the final tournament for the series, Iwas at the top <strong>of</strong> the table leading byonly a few points. To hold my positionwas hard as I had three <strong>of</strong> the best behindme. After a very long day <strong>of</strong> patterns,sparring and special techniques I wasawarded Female Black Belt GrandChampion. <strong>The</strong> most memorable momentin the 2003 under 18s series was thePalmerston North tournament, where Idamaged my foot just before sparring.Now speciality comes after sparring.It was tough, but fun.Samuel SkinnerAfter returning fromthe Junior WorldChampionships <strong>of</strong>2002, I was keen to seta goal for 2003. <strong>The</strong>trophy that I desiredabove all was theEpson U18 Male Black Belt GrandChampion. I was keen to compete in allfive tournaments as I had only competedin two tournaments in 2002 due to acouple <strong>of</strong> injuries.I felt that I had to improve in certain areas.I had been reasonably competitive insparring and specialty technique, butneeded to improve in patterns. I was alsositting my 2nd dan in May, so I knew thatI needed to spend time here.I am fortunate that my club, Nibun ITF,has many students who have competedinternationally and so I discussed thiswith them and took advice whenever Icould. I also had Hong Looi and HonzaKubat staying at our house for severalmonths and they were <strong>of</strong> great help andinspiration to me. I saw how theypractised all aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> tobe competitive all round.When we arrived for the final tournamentI was ahead on points, but with othercompetitors capable <strong>of</strong> overtaking me.Things went well and I received theGrand Champion trophy. It was one <strong>of</strong>the proudest moments <strong>of</strong> my life.This year will be my last series. My adviceto all junior students is to take part in asmany as you can. I wasplaced 1 st in all the five tournaments.Preparing for each tournament involvedregular club night trainings at MrMcPhail’s Papakura club, as well astraining at home with my sister Alisa. Ialso had extra coaching and training aspart <strong>of</strong> the ‘Counties Manukau NationalsTeam’. I didn’t do special techniques untilthe fourth tournament because I thoughtI was too short. (A big mistake!)I was fully supported by my parentsDavid and Vienna. My dad was mysecond in the ring for sparring, and mymum and sister would cheer me on fromthe side.My best tournament was in theWellington U18-4, where I came first inpatterns, sparring and specialtechniques. I was supported by abouttwenty <strong>of</strong> my extended family members,who lived locally. My grandparents alsotravelled with us.My goals for 2004 are to win ‘Best OverallBelt’ at the Counties Regional tournamentfor the 3 rd year in a row, compete in theNationals and to defend my ‘EpsonUnder 18s Colour Belt’ title. Standards and DisciplineMoral Ethics and the Code <strong>of</strong> Conduct in <strong>ITFNZ</strong>by Ian Campbell, IV dan, Director,Standards and Discipline SubcommitteePart 1 <strong>of</strong> 3<strong>The</strong> student / instructor relationship –sajeji-do<strong>The</strong> morality and conduct <strong>of</strong> studentshas always been a high priority and anintegral element in the martial art <strong>of</strong><strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. General Choi documentedethical ways <strong>of</strong> conduct and behaviourfor students and instructors, notably thetenets and the student oath.<strong>The</strong> tenets <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> are courtesy,integrity, perseverance, selfcontrol,indomitable spirit.<strong>The</strong> student oath reads as follows:<strong>The</strong>se two elements are embeddedinto new students’ training. <strong>The</strong>tenets and the student oath formthe initial understanding <strong>of</strong> ethicalbehaviour in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. <strong>The</strong> instructorinstils this and is responsible formentoring these elements whilst teachingthe student the physical and mentalaspects <strong>of</strong> the art.Students can refer to the do jang rules tograsp what is expected from them. Eachdo jang has the same basic rules althoughinstructors may have extra rules specificto their own do jang. As a visiting studentyou should make yourself familiar withthe expectations <strong>of</strong> the instructor.When we progress as students wenaturally take on more responsibilitiesand there is accordingly a tendency forjuniors to look upon their seniors as rolemodels. Students tend to emulate thetraining styles <strong>of</strong> their instructors, andthe way that they conduct themselvesinside and outside the do jang. <strong>The</strong> trustand loyalty students build with theirrespective instructors overtime will havea major influence on an individual. Aninstructor will not only teach the studentthe physical aspects <strong>of</strong> the art, they willalso pass on their life skills, conduct andintegrity and the do, or way, aspect <strong>of</strong><strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>. It is important, therefore,to ensure seniors and instructors havean awareness <strong>of</strong> what is expected <strong>of</strong> themas holders <strong>of</strong> such influential positions.Our founder, General Choi, understoodthe unique dynamics created betweeninstructors and their students. Inrecognising this he set guidelines forstudent / instructor relationships – sajejido.Never tire <strong>of</strong> teaching. A good instructorcan teach anywhere any time, and alwaysbe ready to answer questions.An instructor should be eager for theirstudent to surpass them; it is the ultimatecompliment for an instructor. A studentshould never be held back. If theinstructor realizes the student hasdeveloped beyond their teachingcapabilities, the student should be sentto a higher ranking instructor.An instructor must always set a goodexample for the student and neverattempt to defraud them. <strong>The</strong>development <strong>of</strong> students takesprecedence over commercialism. Oncean instructor becomes concerned withmaterialism they will lose the respect <strong>of</strong>their students.Instructors should teach scientificallyand theoretically to save time and energy.Instructors should help studentsdevelop good contacts outside the dojang. It is an instructor’s responsibilityto develop students outside as well asinside the do jang.Students should be encouraged to visitother do jang and study othertechniques. Students who are forbiddento are more likely to become rebellious.<strong>The</strong>re are two advantages for allowingthis: not only is there the possibility astudent may observe a technique thatis ideally suited to them, but they mayalso have the chance to learn bycomparing their technique to inferiortechniques.All students should be treated equally;there should be no favourites.If the instructor is not able to answer astudent’s question, they should notGeorge Konia receives the 2003 Epson New Zealand Instructor <strong>of</strong> the Year Awardfabricate an answer but admit they donot know and attempt to find out.An instructor should not seek anyfavours from their students.An instructor should not exploit theirstudent. <strong>The</strong> only purpose <strong>of</strong> aninstructor is to produce both technicallyand mentally excellent students.Always be honest with students, andnever break their trust.(General Choi, Condensed Encyclopaedia<strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong>, 5th ed, p43)All instructors are aware <strong>of</strong> their hugeresponsibility to their students. Yourjunior grades are aware <strong>of</strong> what you aresaying and doing while you are sitting onthe floor so a mature <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>Do</strong> attitudeshould be practised by you at all timesthroughout the grading.DO move quickly when spoken to by yourseniors.DO NOT turn your back when moving backfrom the examiners.DO sit properly while waiting to be called.Stretching is allowed.DO NOT lean against the back wall.DO NOT ridicule others grading. Everyoneis nervous, and others listening toyou will not appreciate any negative comments.You should sit quietly and be supportive<strong>of</strong> your fellow students no matterwhich club they are from.DO NOT take your theory book onto thefloor.
