MAJ GEN NARINDER SINGH – A TRIBUTE101MAJ GEN NARINDER SINGH– A TRIBUTE –KARTAR SINGH *I first met the late Maj Gen Narinder Singh during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. He was holding the key appointment <strong>of</strong> Director MilitaryOperations, Indian Army in the rank <strong>of</strong> Brigadier. I remember thatthe then Chief General ‘Muchoo’ Chaudhary placed great faith in him.Throughout the war, he dedicatedly devoted himself toward theconduct <strong>of</strong> operations and was the key adviser to the Chief.He was born into an Army family and spent his early years withhis grandfather (Nanaji) who had retired as an Honorary Captain andsettled down in Lyallpur district. Having passed Intermediate (F. Sc.)examination from Khalsa College, Amritsar, this young, adventurousstudent enlisted in the British Indian Army as a Sepoy in April 1938.He served in the Frontier force. A British Officer, Major Douglas sawa potential leader in this young sepoy, and recommended him to beinterviewed for a commission in the Army. Thus this young man wascommissioned as an Officer in the IMA, Dehru Doon in 1943 andjoined the 8 Cavalry Regiment. World War II found him on the Burmafront. Gradually he rose in rank, and held key command and staffappointments. The 1948 Hyderabad action saw his armoured squadronin the forefront, when they occupied Aurangabad. He then moved toJammu and Kashmir and also served in the North East Frontiers. In1951, he was selected to be trained at the prestigious Defence ServicesStaff College at Wellington. His was indeed an ideal Army Career. Atlast came the Red Letter day when he was given command <strong>of</strong> newlyraised20 Lancers at Ahmednagar in 1957. After distinguished serviceas Grade One Staff Officer <strong>of</strong> an operational Division, he was* Lt Gen (retd) PVSM, # 1801, Sector 34-D, Chandigarh
