To the extent that it has retained this significanceamid the land-use pressures of the last century and stillmanages to find contemporary uses — such as the NationalTrail — then Offa’s Dyke arguably stands out among allBritain’s major ancient monuments as that which most tangiblyconnects our modern lives with their distant historical origins.
