Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Pope:
It is with great pride and admiration for the
family that is Pope John Paul II High School that I
share with you our 2008-09 Annual Report.
The past year was eventful and successful on many
fronts. As you peruse the school highlights beginning
on page four, you will notice many examples of
how we are able to successfully educate the whole
person. Academically, our students are well
prepared. The page seven listing of colleges where
members of the Class of 2009 have elected to
attend is further evidence of their preparedness for
collegiate studies.
In addition to educating the mind, Catholic
educators are also called upon to educate the heart.
From mission trips and donating blood to volunteering
on numerous projects and retreats, our
students (and faculty) frequently give of themselves
to help others. They realize God has blessed them in
many ways and that the best way for us to thank the
Giver is to share the gifts He has bestowed upon us.
Beyond the heart and mind, educating the whole
person also includes physical growth and participation.
Our students utilize the playing fields and the
performance stage to complement their classroom
learning as they showcase their talents for hundreds
of fans and theater-goers.
Elsewhere in this report, you will see a listing of the
many, many wonderful people who have supported
Pope throughout our first 29 years. We are forever
grateful to each and every volunteer and donor for
their support of Pope.
You will also see a sampling of successes attained
by many of our alumni. From educators to executives,
from newscasters and entertainers to medical
and legal professionals, and from military officers to
homemakers, our alumni remain a source of pride
for all of us. Their success is our success!
Although we have much cause for celebration, I
would be remiss if I did not call your attention to
the gloomy financial picture illustrated on pages
eight and nine. There is no easy way to say that we
need your financial support to continue our mission
of developing spiritual, physical and moral gifts
through academic excellence. Please support our
Annual Fund and/or “Escape to Paradise” at whatever
level is comfortable for you. You can make a
difference in helping to improve our financial
status as we seek to bridge the gap between tuition
revenue and the higher cost of educating each student.
Let me thank you in advance for praying and
caring for our school and the students we serve.
Pope simply would not be the wonderful school that
it is today if it were not for your continued interest
and support. Please know that your comments and
suggestions are encouraged and always appreciated
by me.

School Highlights
The 2008-09 academic year was a major success on
many counts, both inside and outside the classroom.
Academically, Pope students continued to score well
on both the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.
While the scores for Florida students remained
below the national average on both exams, Pope
scores continued to be higher than those recorded
in Florida and on the national front. Our SAT
composite totaled 1524 versus Florida’s mark
of 1475 and the national average of 1509. Our
ACT composite of 22.2 compared favorably with
the Florida score of 19.5 and the national average
of 21.1.
Preparedness for college can also be affirmed by the
performance of our students on Advanced
Placement exams. Last year, 82 students sat for a
total of 162 AP exams in 9 test areas. Over 50
percent of the scores were at the 3, 4 or 5 levels that
allow graduates to be considered for college credit
and/or advanced placement
in college.

more than just a college
preparatory school. We
are first and foremost a
Catholic school. As such,
we have the opportunity
to educate the whole
person by sharing faith
and family values.
Service to others continued
to be a major component
of the Pope experience.
“We require each
student to complete a minimum of 100 hours of
service to the community during their four years at
Pope,” noted Director of Campus Ministry Diane

DeMarco. “I continue to be amazed at the growing
number of students who exceed this minimum
requirement and by the quality of their service.”
During the summer of 2008, 12 students got an
early start on helping others as they participated in
a weeklong mission trip to the Catholic Heart
Workcamp in Charleston, South Carolina.

Baliram, the students helped rehab houses for the
poor and the elderly; staffed a food bank; and,
worked with migrant children.
In addition to a wide variety of service projects, the
school also hosted two blood drives. For the third
year in a row, the Community Blood Center of
South Florida awarded Pope the trophy for the
largest number of blood units collected in the
small school division. Pope also won another
trophy for the largest number of blood platelets
collected by a small school.

All underclass students and faculty members
participated in religious retreats last year.
Additionally, 107 members of the senior class
participated in a Kairos retreat – an extended fourday,
three-night spiritual experience guided by
adult and student leaders. It was offered three
times last year.

On the activities front, Drama Director Vincent
Castellano artfully directed four performances of
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The production
yielded nominations for eight students in six
categories from the Cappies (Critics and Awards
Program) – Bianca Barioli, Ali Beaumont, Celine
Boccia, Jackie Garcia, Stephanie LoVerde,
Breiland Springer, Rebecca Tiufekchiev and
Ambar Torres.

Additionally, Victoria Razzo and Guiseppi Barioli
received the Commendee Award for Outstanding
Achievement in High School Theater, while
Ambar Torres was similarly recognized for her
contributions as a lead critic for the Cappies.
The athletic program was under new leadership
last year as Scott Baker took over the reins as
Athletic Director. New head coaches joining Eagle
athletics were Chris Kokell in football, David
Manning in baseball, and Gregg Norton and
Sheri Wilder in softball.
Here come the Eagles!
Outstanding team efforts resulted in girls’ volleyball
winning the District Championship, while
District Finalist honors went to boys’ lacrosse,
boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer. Boys’ golf and girls’
tennis finished second in Districts, while the girls’
track team placed fifth in the State meet.

School Highlights
Stephanie Schappert won a state championship in
3A cross country and placed second in state track
for both the 800 and 1600 meter run. Brittany
D’Addio received First Team All-State honors and
was recognized as the Palm Beach County Soccer
Player of the Year. Mallory Hager received the
prestigious Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for
Palm Beach County.

Meanwhile, our “mathletes” under the direction of
Jeff Brooks took third place honors in Palm Beach
County and 25th in state competition sponsored
by the Florida Math League. The team was led by
seniors Alessia Cioci, James Fortino and Luis
Perez de Lara. Top math performers among the
underclassmen were David Builes, Alessio
Santoro and Rebecca Tiufekchiev.
A sampling of student accomplishments in other
areas include Katie Freedman winning the Tenth
Annual Wolens Jewish Writing Competition for
Teens; Luca Boccia and Ambar Torres receiving
straight Excellence marks for their duet acting
piece at the State Thespian competitions; Mallory
Hager and Christopher Zebart being selected as
YMCA Schipani Scholarship recipients; Eddy
McCormack winning a Pathfinder Award for
Instrumental Music; and Kimberly Heise winning
the Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of
Commerce Scholarship Award for her work in art.
Special recognition at the 27th Commencement
went to Christina Dupre (Valedictorian) and
Allyson Smith (Salutatorian). Mallory Hager and
Sean Mallen were announced as the recipients of
the Pope John Paul II Award, the highest honor
bestowed by the school upon a student. These
honorees and their 142 classmates in the Class of
2009 raised our alumni count to more than 5,500.

*Financial Notes – During the 2008-09 academic year, expenditures exceeded revenues by $385,000. In
reality, the financial picture was more gloomy since the Other Income total of $704,000 represented receipt of
an insurance claim for damages caused by hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. (The repairs were paid in previous
fiscal years.) During the past fiscal year, the school also experienced a Net Loss on Investments of $113,000.
This was due to the declining stock market.

Nine Receive Presidential Merit Awards
Young Scholars Recognized
Nine students from five Catholic elementary
schools were honored at a Presidential Merit Award
Reception and Dinner at Pope John Paul II High
School on April 30. Each honoree received a
$1,000 Presidential Merit Award, renewable for
all four years of high school. This marked the
first year that the awards have been given by
Pope John Paul II High School to incoming
freshman students.
“We have always been fortunate to have outstanding
youngsters apply for admission to Pope,”
commented Dr. Michael J. Coury, the school’s
president. “This year, we wanted to recognize and
honor a select group of students who have already
distinguished themselves in a number of areas.”
Recipients of the Presidential Merit Award were
students who demonstrated outstanding academic
credentials, leadership and service qualities, and an
established record of involvement in clubs and
activities. The nine students who received this
award were: Nicolas Aquino and Christine
Sullivan from St. Joan of Arc School in Boca Raton
(Sr. Ellen Murphy, RSM, Principal); Alyssa Bilotta
and Amy Nevitt from St. Mark School in Boynton

Second Annual South County Shootout
Alumni Fishing Event Another Success
The Pope John Paul II Alumni Association hosted the
Second Annual South County Shootout on Saturday,
May 30. The deep-sea fishing tournament was followed
by a barbeque at the Royal Palm Yacht and Country
Club Marina in Boca Raton where attendees enjoyed
the fresh catch of the day. Anglers competed for $5,000
in cash prizes, while proceeds raised from the event
helped fund scholarships and other needs at Pope.
Tournament Coordinator Paul Cipolla, a member of
Pope’s first graduating class in 1983, was pleased with
the results of the event. “We were successful in doubling

revenue from our first shootout last year,” noted
Cipolla. “This allowed us to provide even more
resources for our high school.”
Major beneficiaries of the event are children of
alumni who now attend Pope. This year, 12 students at
Pope each received an $800 Children of Alumni Legacy
Scholarship. These second-generation Eagles are following
in their parents’ footsteps by attending the same
high school mom and/or dad attended.
Other proceeds from this fund-raising event were used
to provide supplemental funding for both the Athletic
Department and the Drama Department. An electronic
whiteboard was also purchased
and installed in a classroom,
allowing the school to further
integrate more technology into
the teaching and learning process.

Honor Roll of Donors
Assembling this Honor Roll of Donors has been a privilege and a challenge.
There are nearly 3,200 donors recorded since our school’s inception in 1980.
Our decision to recognize gifts both cumulatively and annually meant
that past records needed to be upgraded to the new recognition levels, while
allowing gifts received during the 2008-09 academic year to “stand out”
among the list of donors. The result is the system below.
The giving categories reflect the total of all gifts received by donors throughout
their giving history at Pope. Additionally, gifts received during the past
academic year at the President’s Club level are highlighted in bold with the
appropriate “star” in black, silver, or gold (see the legend below.)
This massive project was a collaborative effort requiring the review of all of
our donor records and the expertise of our IT Department. With a high volume

CLASS OF 1983
Rick Simpson graduated from Loyola
University where he majored in
Marketing. He has become a wellknown
face in the local and national
medical industry as the CEO of
Diagnostic Test Group, a multimillion
dollar company. Rick also
spends quality time supporting one of
his favorite local charities “Boys Town
South Florida”, as well as the
renowned “Boys Town” in Nebraska.
CLASS OF 1985
Stacie Nevadomski Berdan is a
famous award-winning author and
consultant who has appeared on various
television shows. Her professional
responsibilities have taken her to more
than 50 countries in Asia-Pacific,
Europe and South America. She is coauthor
with C. Perry Yeatman on “Get
Ahead By Going Abroad: A Woman’s
Guide to Fast-Track Career Success.”
Stacie has generously shared her talents
with her alma mater by making presentations
on campus. A graduate of
Florida Atlantic University, she and
her husband are the parents of twin
daughters, Vizsla and Cody, and the
family resides in Glastonbury, CT.

Dr. William M. DeMarchi has actively
supported our school. He is known
throughout the communities of Boca
Raton and Coral Springs for both his
talent and his philanthropic endeavors.
Dr. DeMarchi was inducted into the
Pope John Paul II High School Hall of
Fame last year.
CLASS OF 1986
Sean Graham is a former Calvin Klein
model and Marlboro man. He is now
one of Hollywood’s most famous
stuntmen, doubling for a number of
actors such as Brad Pitt and Mark
Wahlberg. He holds a world record
for stunt driving, and he demonstrated
his skills on TV with Jay Leno when he
slid a car 180 degrees into a parallel
parking space only 35 centimeters
larger than the car. Sean also gives
back to the community. For over 16
years, he has been an avid volunteer for
Special Olympics and The Penny Lane
Foundation for Abused Kids.

Jennifer Mulhall taught in the Social
Studies Department at Pope from
1992 to 2007. She recently completed
her studies for two Masters Degrees;
one in Political Science, the other in
Curriculum and Instruction. She is
now enrolled in the doctoral program
at Florida Atlantic University.

McCormack ’85 nurtured their love
for baseball at their alma mater, playing
under Coach Tim Koerber. Brian
and John now coach baseball at the
Division I collegiate level. Brian is the
head coach of the Bearcats at the
University of Cincinnati; John is the
head coach for the Florida Atlantic
University Owls.

Scott Barlow graduated from the
University of Florida and the
University of Akron School of Law.
Since 2001, he has served as Vice
President and General Counsel for
ValueClick, Inc., the world’s largest
online advertising firm based in
Westlake Village, California. He has
been acclaimed as one of the “Top 25
Lawyers in the Valley” by the San
Fernando Valley Business Journal.
Kristine Buckley has appeared in several
television productions. Most recently,
she played the role of Rhonda on the
popular TV show, “According to Jim”.

Mark Hansen, a graduate of Florida
Atlantic University, is a successful
businessman and a two-term member
of the Palm Beach County School
Board. He has given over 1,300
seminars and authored “An Ark
for Learning”, a learning guide for
students and teachers. His most recent
publication is “Success 101 for Teens: 7
Traits for a Winning Life.”
Douglas Graham Vincent was promoted
to the ranks of Lieutenant
Colonel in the US Army at a Pentagon
ceremony. The youngest person to
hold this rank, Doug will take his
squadron to Afghanistan for his
fifth combat zone deployment. He is
married to Irene (Mesa) Vincent ’89.

Major Dean Lynch graduated from
the University of Florida School of
Law and now serves in the Army’s
Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG.)
One of Dean’s most important contributions
has been as the primary legal
advisor to a Brigade Commander in
Iraq, where he is helping to frame the
rebuilding of that country. Dean has
been awarded the Bronze Star!

Lance Simon is an Architecture graduate
from the University of Southern
California. He is the Principal of
Phoenix-FTA Inc., a Los Angeles
firm that specializes in affordable and
sustainable housing.
CLASS OF 1990
Marc Boran has been an active
duty Naval Officer for the past 15
years. He is currently serving as the
Executive Officer on the USS FAR-
RAGUT (DDG 99), homeported in
Mayport, Florida. The FARRAGUT
recently circumnavigated South
America where it supported the
United States Southern Command's
Partnership of the America's 2008
six-month deployment.
Dr. Kevin M. Ross serves as Lynn
University’s fifth President. Dr. Ross
previously served on the advisory
board of Pope John Paul II High
School, and he was inducted into the
Pope John Paul II High School Hall of
Fame in 2006.

Christopher Kilian serves as the
Assistant Principal at Pope. He and
his wife, Suzanne (a former Math
Department Chair at Pope), are the
parents of two daughters - Katie, age 3,
and Kelly, age 20 months – and a new
baby son, Christopher F. Kilian, II.

Our school has been the catalyst
for entire families, and the Gregory
family is one of our most notable.
Dale Gregory ’93 is a naval pilot,
while Erin Gregory ’96 has had
some of her work published in the
American Medical Journal. Katy
Gregory ’98, meanwhile, is the chief
archeologist for the Seminole Tribe.

Valerie (Cardinale) Guagenti and her
husband, Frank, were married last year
at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.
They are now the proud parents of a
new baby boy, Anthony Michael.
Valerie is in her fourth year of service
at Pope where she works with the
Dean of Students and oversees the
Attendance Office.

Lauren Godden graduated from
Boston College before earning her law
degree from Florida State University.
She is now an Assistant State Attorney
in West Palm Beach.
Doreen Scanlon is a graduate from
Boston College with a Master’s degree
in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson
College. After working with Fox News
Channel in New York City, she is now
the morning and noon anchor for
ABC6 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Tara Taylor serves on the staff at her
alma mater where she is the head
women’s volleyball coach and assistant
women’s lacrosse coach. She also
assists with the cheerleaders and is the
moderator for the Spirit Club.

Alex DiPrato received a double
major in Broadcast Journalism and
Political Science from the University
of Miami. After stints with television

Dr. Justin Sporrer graduated from
the University of Florida School of
Medicine. He specializes in neurosurgery,
and he works with the neurosurgeon
who once operated on him:
Dr. Ben Carson! Justin is in his second
year of residency at Shands Hospital
in Gainesville. He married a Pope
classmate, Kristy Mechler ’99.
CLASS OF 2000
Courtney Vincent Holmes is the
Assistant Artistic Director at the
Amyclae Ballet Company in Stafford,
Virginia. She received the Masters
Degree in both Renaissance Literature
and in Shakespeare in Performance.
Timothy Lewis Jr. is a well-known
member of NASCAR. He continues
his Rolex GT career as part of Autohaus
Motorsports and the first-year Rolex
team’s No. 72 GXP.R. The team will
compete in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Ed Marynowitz completed his BA
degree in Business Management at the
University of Central Florida, then
earned double Masters degrees from
UCF in Business Administration and
in Sports Business Management. He
is the Director of Player Personnel for
Crimson Tide Football at the
University of Alabama. Ed previously
served as a Scouting Assistant for the
Miami Dolphins football team.

Justin Kintz graduated cum laude from

of the Interior in External and
Intergovernmental Affairs.

Molly Godden graduated from the
United States Coast Guard Academy.
She is now an ensign stationed in Key

Michael Crowley has been a member
of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University Eagles Flight Team since his
freshman year in college. He is also a
part-time flight instructor at ERAU
where he completed the Bachelor of
Science in Aeronautical Science program
in just three years.
Kaitlin Godden attends the United
States Coast Guard Academy where she
is a 1st Class cadet (senior).
Billy Pulte attends Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois, where
he earned his helicopter license during
his freshman year. Noting the demand
for aerial photography in the
Chicagoland area, he began his own
aerial photography business (Great
Lake Helicopters) from his dorm room.

Pope John Paul II High School, like most non-public schools, conducts
an Annual Fund. As the name implies, this is something the school does
every year. We invite our many friends to make a voluntary contribution
to the school. The monies raised for the Annual Fund help the school
bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the higher cost to educate
each student. In many ways, the Annual Fund may be seen as a silent
scholarship that will benefit “every student, every day” at Pope.
As Chairman for this year’s Annual Fund, my priority is to not only
surpass our goal of $100,000, but to also increase the percentage of
participation among all stakeholder groups. A higher percentage of
participation from the members of our school family improves our
chances to successfully compete for grants from outside organizations and
foundations. These additional gifts would allow us to provide more opportunities for our students
without increasing the cost of a Pope education.
