Mechanical <strong>technology</strong> 2 DoE/Examination Guidelines Amendments 2008NSCThe <strong>practical</strong> <strong>assessment</strong> task <strong>for</strong> 2008 was reviewed and the followingrecommendations are put <strong>for</strong>ward <strong>for</strong> your kind consideration.THREE QUESTIONS:Due to total amount of different <strong>tasks</strong> set in the Practical Assessment Task (PAT) of 2008the PAT seems to be too difficult to complete during one year. The teachers could beguided and assisted in a very short time to clarify and implement the suggested PAT.It is there<strong>for</strong>e recommended that the PAT be adjusted as follows:• The scenarios of question one (pg 9) and question two (Pg 14) will be usedas the Practical Assessment Task (PAT) <strong>for</strong> 2008. One of these scenarioscan be chosen as the PAT <strong>for</strong> 2008. The Technological process need to beincluded in the required Design Portfolio.Please note: The word (elevate) used in the scenario on pg 9 must bereplaced with the word support.• Question one ( joining methods pg 8) could be used as aninvestigation task <strong>for</strong> the school based <strong>assessment</strong> ( CASS)The scenario given (Motor Trestle) should be used as PAT.• Question two (pg 11-13) will be used as a simulation task <strong>for</strong>the school based <strong>assessment</strong> ( CASS).The scenario given (Machine part) should be used as PAT• Question three (pg 16-18) could be used as an investigation task <strong>for</strong> theschool based <strong>assessment</strong> ( CASS).The working drawing (Figure 1 on pg 10) is included as an example and innovations canbe done by the learners.The working drawing (Figure 5 on pg 14) needs to be corrected by adding the diametersymbols ( ∅ ) on the drawing.Thank you <strong>for</strong> your kind assistance in this delicate matter.2
