Content Analysis of Romantic Comedies 18Selective CodingAfter examining the data, a finding that seemed to emerge was that depictions ofrelationships seemed contradictory and therefore potentially confusing to adolescent viewers.With the purpose of the present study to identify how relationships are depicted in romanticcomedy films and what these might suggest to adolescent viewers, “Contradictory Messages”was named as the core concept.Relationships were shown to be at once highly desirable and highly undesirable.Characters in relationships placed importance on and prioritised partners, often made greatefforts with romantic gestures, and were understanding and supportive when partnersconfided in them. Characters were also shown, however, to neglect their relationships,deceive their partners, fight and argue, and in some cases be unfaithful. Whilst it could beargued that such contradictory behaviours are actually common in reality and that these filmsmay therefore be offering a realistic representation in this respect, the previously discussedunderplay of the consequences of negative and undesirable behaviours does not accuratelyreflect those typical in reality (e.g. Fitness, 2001), and so it would seem that theserepresentations of arguably realistic features of relationships are still depicted in anunrealistic way.Additional to the above desirable/undesirable representations were thecontradictions that could be found in the undesirable behaviours themselves. An example ofthis can be found in The Wedding Planner. A female character confides in a male characterabout a painful past experience of her ex-fiancé being unfaithful to her. However, these twocharacters are themselves having an emotional affair and yet this itself is not depictednegatively. With the character’s described experience of infidelity painted in a negative lightand the present behaviour as simply two people falling in love, there is potential forconfusion in viewers as to what is acceptable and what is not.
