<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>CDE</strong>- ConservationRules and RegulationsJim HoweOley Valley High SchoolThe Conservation <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> Career Development Event will followthe same format as that for the Prepared <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>CDE</strong> as outlined inthe National <strong>FFA</strong> <strong>CDE</strong> Handbook located athttp://www.ffa.org/programs/cde/html/cde_events.htm#ppsWith the following additions: The Conservation <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>CDE</strong> willbe limited to <strong>FFA</strong> members currently enrolled in Agriculture Education classin grades 7 through 12.NOTE: Once a student competes in the Conservation <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>CDE</strong>,they are no longer eligible to participate in the <strong>Junior</strong> Prepared <strong>Public</strong><strong>Speaking</strong> <strong>CDE</strong>.Number of ContestantsThree (3) contestants from each of the four Regions may compete.Manuscripts1. Four typewritten or computer generated copies of the speech on 81/2”X 11” white bond paper with a cover page displaying the speechtitle; participant’s name, chapter, and date must be submitted and thatthe speech is for the Conservation <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> Contest. Theformat should use 1” margins, and 10-12 characters per inch. Followthe American Psychological Association (APA) style manual fordeveloping references and bibliography. Do not bind, but place astaple in upper left corner. Manuscripts not meeting these guidelineswill be penalized.2. A complete, accurate, and up-to-date bibliography used in writing thespeech, MUST be included as part of the manuscript. All participantsin the Prepared <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong> Career Development Event shouldgive credit to others where any direct quotes, phrases, or special datesare used in the manuscript, in order not to be guilty of plagiarism.The Boards of National Officers and Directors of <strong>FFA</strong> at the October1960 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, adopted the following:<strong>FFA</strong> State <strong>CDE</strong> 10/04 <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong>-Conservation - 1


“ A bibliography MUST be included as part of the public speaker’smanuscript, and any direct quotes from any source of informationmust be marked in “quotes” on the manuscript and be identified inthe bibliography. Failure to do so will automatically disqualify aparticipant. This applies to all events above the local level.”3. Each participant’s manuscript will be the result of his or her ownefforts. It is expected that the participant will take advantage of allavailable training facilities at their local school in developing theirspeaking ability. Facts and working data may be secured from anysource, but must be appropriately documented.4. Contestants may choose their own topic. The topic must relate to theconservation of soil, land, air, wildlife or water. Each contestant’sspeech is to be the result of his or her own efforts.EligibilityThe contest will be open to students enrolled in a course in agriculturaleducation during the school year immediately preceding the state contest.Previous first place winners in this contest are not eligible to compete asecond time in this contest.<strong>FFA</strong> State <strong>CDE</strong>- 10/04 <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Speaking</strong>-Conservation- 2
