EMMA FRANKLINFinance Support Manager, AustraliaEmma works as Finance Support Manager in Sydney for BAT Australia. An Australiannational, she joined The Management trainee programme after graduating with adegree in a Manufacturing Discipline.“The main attraction of British American Tobacco was the quality of the programme andthe fact that the company places as much emphasis on developing management andleadership capabilities as it does on acquiring technical competencies.I started in Operations and spent a year gaining a good all-round understanding of bothmanufacturing and engineering. Following my successful completion of the programmeI was promoted to the role of Manufacturing Shift Supervisor, a position that I knewwould give me significant challenges. I had to make important decisions on the spot, under pressure, knowing that I was accountable for the consequences. Also, the mergerbetween Wills and Rothmans took place while I was in Operations. Effectively, this meantmerging two factories, and accommodating major changes to production requirementswithout compromising production objectives. From the start, I always wanted to extend my knowledge of other functions, add depthto my commercial skills and, ultimately, give myself the all-round understanding I needto become a truly effective manager. So, with the full support of my coach andmanagers, I changed function completely. I took up a post as Internal Auditor in Finance, where I gained invaluable cross-functional experience through audits of Marketing, IT,Project Implementations and overseas visits to countries such as Papua New Guinea.I can’t think of another company that could, or would, have supported me in sucha profound change of direction in my career. The graduate programme gave me afoundation of management and leadership skills that made it possible for me tosuccessfully move into a function in which I had no experience.”

INDRIYATI SUMARSONOHead of Business Service, IndonesiaNow Head of Business Services for BAT Indonesia, Indri joined the businessimmediately after graduating. She entered the Finance function as a managementtrainee and rapidly worked her way up to the position of Financial Controller, atwhich point she moved to a wholly new area and accepted the challenge ofrunning the Business Services function.“I expected a great deal of BAT when I first joined the company. BAT had an excellentreputation for training and development in the Asia Pacific region and was clearly amajor player on the international business stage. That said, I was prepared to put in a great deal of effort and really make the most ofthe opportunities available. Even now, I’m proud of the fact that I graduated from myThe Management trainee programme early. I felt I was starting on a journey, and Iknew that The Management trainee programme was just the beginning.A major milestone early in my career involved automating Finance function processesthat had previously been manual and labour-intensive. The benefits were immediate, obvious and, in a business where speed of response, dynamism and energy are highlyvalued, very much appreciated. My biggest challenge to date, without a doubt, has been moving to a senior rolewithin Business Services. This was a completely new function, and to me felt like a boldmove. However, colleagues and senior managers provided me with support andencouragement, and BAT has been quick to provide me with the training and tools Ineed to succeed in such a different environment.I now have a fresh perspective on the business as a whole. Each move or promotionhas given me the chance to make a greater contribution, not least because my broaderview of BAT adds value to my judgement and opinions.I think my career path says a lot about BAT’s willingness to promote and reward onmerit, rather than age or seniority. I don’t know what my next move will be, but whatI do know is that I will continue to be stimulated, rewarded and valued and my rolewill be matched to my unique and individual career interests in the company.”07

HASAN ADNANHead of HR, IranHasan has recently moved to Iran where he has taken the role of Head of HumanResources.“I joined BAT’s Challenge Initiative programme because as a fresh graduate, my keypriority was to look for an organisation that could provide me with fast trackdevelopment as an HR professional and offer me an international career at a laterstage. Also, having just completed an MBA in HR, I felt that the multi-nationalism andscope of the business would give me more opportunities to put my expertise andpassion to good use.During the course of The Management trainee programme I had a great deal ofexposure to the various disciplines. This gave me an early opportunity to understandthe strategic role of HR in the context of the business as a whole. Just as importantly, working on cross-functional projects has given me a rounded and balancedunderstanding of how this major multinational business operates, and how everyone’scontribution plays a vital and unique part in delivering the corporate vision.I believe my work as a Change Management Facilitator was a significant step forward,as it helped me develop and implement a major change management programme. This allowed me to develop my capacity for strategic thought, and was the kind ofexposure you might expect as a more experienced manager rather than amanagement trainee. Projects like this helped me fast-track my learning and careerprogression, giving me the freedom to set goals and make important businessdecisions while simultaneously gaining both the confidence and opportunity to provemy capabilities. In common with my previous career moves, my current role is proving to be the mostcomplex, challenging and, consequently, rewarding to date. As Head of HR in Iran,my team and I are responsible for building an entire organisation in a country wherepotential employees are hard to source and consultants, recruitment agencies andother external suppliers are in short supply due to the limited presence of multinationalcompanies. It won’t be easy, but I know it will be fulfilling and hugely enjoyable.”09

LUC BADIBANGACorporate Social Responsibility Project Manager, UKLuc is a Congolese national who completed his management trainee schemein BAT Congo. He is currently on secondment in the UK as Corporate SocialResponsibility Project Manager whilst remaining a Non-Executive Director ofBAT Congo.“With drive, determination and a willingness to learn, it’s possible to progress veryquickly at BAT. From starting as a management trainee in 1998, I have had several roleswithin the function, all of which have increased in both responsibility and seniority.During my time as CORA manager in BAT Congo, I worked to improve existingcommunication channels within the business. This work included revamping themonthly team briefings and creating forums for employees to meet with the ManagingDirector -irrespective of their position in the company. These attempts at makingcommunication more open were particularly welcomed by staff and enabled them tounderstand the company vision. They were also used to communicate how and whythe work of CORA is vital to employees, the company and external audiences. One of my proudest achievements so far was when I successfully lobbied thegovernment to adopt tax reform within the tobacco area. The existing tax regulationsfavoured the informal sector and illegal trade, so tax reform was essential to our businesssuccess. The project entailed securing the involvement and respect of high rankinggovernment Ministers and Presidential Cabinet Advisors – which was an extremelychallenging exercise as the local cultural context is one in which seniority comes withage. Over time, I built strong relationships at this level via detailed project plans and oneto-onemeetings. After many late nights and a lot of hard work I delivered a presentationto the whole Cabinet and successfully managed to convince them of the benefits of theproposed tax reform – this resulted in gaining Presidential approval. If you are thinking of a career with British American Tobacco, one of the things I valuethe most is the open-mindedness that characterises BAT around the world. Good ideas, good management techniques and team spirit are a globally recognised currencywithin the business and, if you can make a lasting contribution in these areas, youare sure to go far.”11

RAZEEAH BELATHHR Management Trainee, MauritiusRazeeah graduated from the University of Mauritius with an honours degreein Management, and is currently a management trainee within the HR functionof BAT Mauritius.“I first experienced British American Tobacco as an intern during my degree studies. This gave me an invaluable insight into the business and allowed me to reach anobjective opinion on BAT as a potential employer.Having made it onto The Management trainee programme programme I’m certain thatI’ve made the right decision. After just nine months, the HR Executive was secondedout. This development presented me with a great deal of additional responsibility, notleastfor projects such as validating the company vision, improving internalcommunications and helping to manage the Global Employee Opinion survey.Entrusting me with this level of responsibility and involvement acted as a verypowerful reward and incentive, and gave me the motivation to strive for evenbetter performance. The responsibilities also proved to be important building blocks in my personal, professional and functional development. My understanding of the business hasbeen accelerated through various cross-functional projects, while off-the-jobtraining programmes, such as team building and leadership, negotiating skills andpresentation skills, have started the process of realising my management potential. The advice and support I’ve received from my coach has been fundamental to myprogress. I’ve learned from the values that lie at the heart of our business – support, openness, feedback, fun, innovation, and continuous improvement. My medium-term goal is to become the Head of an HR function with a BAT operatingcompany. After that, I can see myself moving into a more strategic role at a higherlevel. CLAIRE DE VALENCEFinance Management Trainee, SwitzerlandFrench Business graduate Claire currently works as a Finance ManagementTrainee with BAT Switzerland.“I was initially attracted by The Management trainee programme itself. It offeredplenty of support and training, but not at the expense of individuality or responsibility. It seemed a natural progression from my degree course - personally, academicallyand professionally.I joined the Finance function because I liked the fact that the function had a strategicinput that went way beyond just ‘number crunching’. So far, I’ve not been disappointed.Finance with BAT Switzerland is fun, fast-moving with a big requirement from managersto be innovative. I’m currently working in Corporate Finance, working on cash flowforecasts, participating in the company planning process and developing tools to trackour foreign exchange performance. This involves following up on the cash movementsand investments we make, which is a critical area in a multinational company. When I joined BAT my main expectation was to learn and to learn fast. What I’vefound is that every day brings new challenges and the opportunity to learn new skillsand deal with any mistakes made. Accepting responsibility for these isn’t easy, but mycoach is always positive, helping me realise that there is always something valuable tolearn from every experience. In just seven months I am more independent and amreally starting to release the potential of my analytical skills. It is so rewarding to seethat I can spot miscalculations more quickly, make links faster and I am really startingto understand the financial impacts of price, tax and overhead charges. At BAT we are given good tools to work with, the working hours are flexible and TheManagement trainee programme is comprehensive. Most of all, the people arepassionate about what they do and the real emphasis put on team work makes my dayfull of life! Now that I’ve nearly finished my time in Corporate Finance, the next three months willgive me exposure to cross-functional projects, three months on an overseasassignment, team building seminars and, no doubt, plenty of challenges that I’ve yetto imagine. One day I’d like to make it to Financial Director level. I don’t know how I’llget there, or how long it will take. The one certainty is that it will be a hugelyenjoyable process and one that is never less than immensely challenging.”19

TIM FOWLEBusiness Services Management Trainee, UKTim graduated in History from the University of Leicester and joined theBritish American Tobacco Challenge Initiative through the Business Servicesfunction.“Of the several job offers I had to consider after graduating, BAT stood out as abusiness with a uniquely global profile and the kind of opportunities that promisedto keep me motivated and challenged throughout my career.I chose the Business Services function because BAT has developed the BusinessServices environment for ‘business technologists’, and not just technical experts. Isoon learned that leadership and the ability to generate new ideas are the qualitiesmost valued in BAT Business Services Managers. Also, I could see that BusinessServices runs through every aspect of BAT’s worldwide operation and is at the heart ofthe company’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.I’m currently working with the Global HR Systems Team, where I am representingBusiness Services as a Project Manager. My task is to select a supplier for a globalsystem. The solution chosen and developed will ultimately be deployed in over 80end markets around the world. I’ve also managed a project to define and implementa new support model for an HR system – a challenge that has helped me broaden myunderstanding of the business as a whole. To date, my biggest challenge has been a seven-week assignment in Korea, where Iworked with a multi-disciplinary, multinational audit team engaged in assessing themanagement of risk and control in BAT Korea’s business process. The work was hard, but immensely rewarding, and I’ll never forget my time in Korea. The tobacco industry is an extremely interesting area in which to work. Every businessdecision is shaped and driven by the fast-paced nature of the business environment. The challenge is to master your own discipline and optimise the relevance of youractions to the rest of the business. In the long-term, I’d like to further my Business Services career from a business-facingperspective, and for that I’ll need more management training, more exposure, andmore international assignments. ‘VALERIE LEGRIRORECORA Management Trainee, MauritiusValérie graduated with a postgraduate qualification in International Tradeand Communications and a Masters in Spanish and English, and then secureda position as a Management Trainee in Corporate and Regulatory Affairs withBAT Mauritius.“Having studied in Europe and gained an insight into the breadth and reachof multinational companies, I knew that BAT was the clear choice in Mauritius.CORA appealed to me because the function is faced with ever-changingchallenges, which vary enormously from country to country. More than meremanagement of communication between employees and external stakeholders, the CORA department in BAT acts as the guardian of our reputation as aresponsible tobacco company.Working in a controversial industry, it’s important to be part of a company inwhich ethics, meritocracy and a commitment to initiatives such as the anti-youthsmoking programme are valued.I’ve been lucky enough at this early stage in my career to play a significant rolein developing the Social Reporting process for BAT Mauritius. This project mademe realise that even though I viewed myself as a management trainee, mycolleagues saw beyond this and viewed me as an important part of the SocialReporting team.Looking back at the last 10 months, one of my biggest personal achievements hasbeen to contribute in re-injecting a sense of commitment and enthusiasm amongstthe employees by encouraging them to actively participate in communicationmeetings. Individuals are now able to share their achievements, experiences andthose of their departments through presentations to all their colleagues. The training, development and guidance I’ve received have been consistentlyexcellent, as has the extent and nature of my exposure to major projects. I hopeto expand my horizons and increase my international exposure by working inanother BAT operating company. To reach this goal, I know that BAT will help meopen doors through training, increased business awareness and cross-functionalprojects. However, I know that the more determined I am to succeed, the moreopportunities will become available.”23

The Management trainee programme...organise opportunitiesOPERATIONSOur challenge is to get the ‘right product’ tothe ‘right place’ at the ‘right time’ at the ‘rightcost’. This requires the orchestration andexcellent management of a wide range ofactivities from the development of productsthat meet the needs of our customers, to theoperation of the Supply Chain which beginswith us causing tobacco to be grown and endswith the delivery of products to the satisfactionof our customers. To successfully manage sucha wide variety of functions, Operations calls fora diverse mix of people - to bring the broadestrange of talents, perspectives and backgroundsto the mix.To develop future generations of products youwill need an enquiring mind, a great deal ofcuriosity about the material world, and aconstant need to discover better, faster andsafer technological solutions. Our Leaf operations require a uniquecombination of craft, experience and science tosuccessfully manage a natural product fromseed to the point-of-sale. In Manufacturing, akey element of our supply chain, you willdiscover a fast-moving, pressurised, qualityfocussedenvironment in which the smallestdetail can make the biggest difference, andwhere the ability to think and act fast is ofparamount importance. The first part of your development inOperations will be to gain a generalunderstanding of Product and Supply Chain. This will be followed by more in-depthtraining, so that by the time you’ve completedThe Management trainee programme you willunderstand how the functions interact, howour people coordinate their thoughts andactions, and how the entire function isfocussed to meet customers’ changing needs.www.bat.com

JASON KHOOOperations Management Trainee, MalaysiaJason is a Malaysian who graduated in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and is nowa management trainee with BAT in Singapore.“Since joining British American Tobacco I’ve exceeded limits and explored capabilitiesthat I never knew I had in me. My current role is to manage aspects of Productionin the Manufacturing Department - a huge challenge made all the more testing bysignificant restructuring involving the redesign of many processes and procedures.Recently, I’ve led a team in the planning and implementation of a new calibrationsystem for all measuring equipment. My biggest challenge, though, was to lead aproject designed to introduce visual controls across the entire manufacturing area. The responsibility was that much greater because most of the team members weremanagers and far more senior than myself.Responsibility and accountability are the hallmarks of The Management traineeprogramme. I remember being called by the Quality Control Officer in the middleof the night. She told me that the plant’s moisture measuring equipment was givingcontradictory results and that we might be about to produce around two million rejectcigarettes. Alternatively, we could stop production altogether and incur serious losses inrevenue - this was a decision I had to make. My recommendation was that productionshould be continued as normal - it was a calculated risk that paid off, as the productwas fine. If you feel you’re not ready for accountability or don’t have the ability toremain calm under pressure, think twice before joining BAT as a management trainee! The environment is hard work but fun, and I’m learning more and more every day. Inleading a team spanning a wide range of age and experience, my management skills,in particular, are being put to the test. Being the youngest, I have had to exercisepatience and work hard to earn respect. I constantly review my approach to ensureI maintain effective communication with all the members of my team. I can’t imaginegaining this breadth, depth and intensity of experience in any other business.A motivating factor for me is that, as time goes by, I’m working on increasinglycomplex assignments and being given more and more freedom to make decisions. It’sa good feeling, because it tells me that the company values and recognises my talent.”25

SARAH MARTINMaterials Supply Manager, UKSarah has just completed her The Management trainee programme – six monthsearly. She was the second management trainee to join the programme throughthe Supply Chain function in the UK.“British American Tobacco appealed because of the size of the business and theopportunities that a truly multinational company could provide. I particularly wanteda role with an international perspective, so Supply Chain, which deals mainly withExport Markets, seemed an ideal place to start.I wanted a challenge from the outset, and although BAT promised exactly that, I wasstill surprised to be given roles with real responsibility and accountability so early on.One of the first major projects I worked on came through the Brand Launch andModifications Team. We were working to accommodate a new European Directiveconcerning Health Warnings on cigarette packs. The sheer size and complexity of thisproject has been the most challenging aspect of working in BAT to date. Together, wewere managing 31 development briefs with consequences for end marketsthroughout Europe. This meant altering 247 products, which equated to 529materials changing. We had to focus on many different facets – everything fromlegislation in different markets to production tracking, materials tracking, artworktracking and working as part of a virtual team to minimise ‘write-offs’.I became a Materials Supply Manager 18 months later. I felt very privileged to moveinto a management role early and it was great to know that the work I’d completedwas recognised - it proved to me that if you put in the effort you willbe rewarded.British American Tobacco is a business that puts you in at the deep end, but givesyou all the support and encouragement you need to stay afloat and make progress. There’s been a strong sense of team spirit on every project that’s come my way, andthis really motivates me on a day-to-day basis. The industry itself adds another dimension, making my role even more exciting.Things change so fast, and so dramatically, that there’s always something new tolearn and a fresh challenge to face.”27

BRIAN NCUBELeaf Management Trainee, ZimbabweBrian is a Zimbabwean national currently working as a Leaf management trainee inthe UK. He has a MSc in Advanced Farm Management from the Royal AgriculturalCollege, Cirencester.“I knew from friends and teachers that BAT was a successful company with a goodreputation for supporting, promoting and rewarding talented employees. My academicbackground made Leaf the ideal function to join as a management trainee. My time so far within BAT has been very varied and diverse. I began my career inZimbabwe at ‘Export Leaf Tobacco of Africa’, a subsidiary of BAT. This was very hands-onand involved working on a commercial tobacco farm, participating at the auction floors, grading tobacco, and processing leaf in the factory. Within the same period I spent timein the Finance and Logistics departments as part of my cross-functional development.I have since spent time in other BAT operating companies. My time in the UK Southamptonfactory allowed me to get an appreciation for cigarette manufacturing, and a follow upvisit to Groningen Smoking Tobacco and Cigar operations allowed me to get an overviewof a different area of our business. All of this combined has meant that even at such anearly stage in my career I have an holistic view of our business. My most stretching experience was when, together with another management trainee, Iwas responsible for preparing the company to meet the standard necessary for externalaccreditation. This involved drawing up quality and environmental policies, cascading thepolicies throughout the company, assisting line managers with the documentation ofdepartmental procedures and carrying out internal audits.I think the diversity of BAT’s people makes it a particularly open-minded and stimulatingplace to work. There is a dynamism to the environment that makes the daily experiencenever less than exciting and, quite frequently, surprising. My plan is to gain more experience in Leaf, acquire additional responsibility and becomea rounded and highly competent manager with the ability and confidence to accept anychallenge. I am really looking forward to my next secondment – a long-term trainingopportunity in Brazil, which should help me realise these ambitions and open up newopportunities along the way.”29

JOCHEN ROELSScientific Project Leader, GermanyJochen obtained his Diploma of Chemistry at the University of Münster and thencompleted his PhD at the Technical University of Dresden. He is currently aScientific Project Leader within the Material Development department wherehe is responsible for the chemical evaluation of packaging materials.“I was keen to join a business where my specialised chemistry expertise and organisationalskills could be used together. BAT clearly had the size, scope and ambition to fulfil thatwish. I suppose I am like many graduates in that I was looking for an organisation whereI could make breakthroughs, push boundaries and create something new. So far, I cansay that BAT has given me the opportunity to do just that, allowing me to deal directlywith suppliers and giving me the freedom to pursue my own ideas.I have learnt a great deal whilst being on The Management trainee programme, not leastthe fact that there is always more than one solution to a problem. I have worked acrossseveral different functions and disciplines. At one point I was working closely with theQuality and Analytical departments to investigate carbon-monoxide measurements - areal project with important consequences, which also allowed me to spend some timein our Operating Company in Zevenaar.Throughout my training I’ve been in regular contact with BAT colleagues around theworld, and I’ve benefited from access to their different views and specialist knowledge.Currently, I’m responsible for an analytical laboratory, investigating a wide range ofpackaging materials to assess and evaluate their chemical composition. This alsoinvolves being responsible for the development and qualification of new materials. These projects have been a great challenge. It has been thrilling to work in close cooperationwith internal and external business partners to ensure that any customisationto existing methods meets everybody’s needs.I’m not sure what the future holds. I’m happy working in the Research andDevelopment function at present, as the constantly increasing levels of responsibility arekeeping me stretched. I feel I am now ready for an overseas secondment, and as this isclearly an achievable ambition within BAT I’m keen to take full advantage of theinternational opportunities available.”31
