MEDICINES AND PUBLIC HEALTH | 21> Intensive work on access to <strong>medicines</strong> forHIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and other prioritydiseases, with a focus on selection, regulation,quality assessment, prices, and monitoring oftrade agreements.> Expansion of information on comparativemedicine prices worldwide and developmentof a new price survey methodology to helphealth systems and consumers become moreinformed buyers of quality <strong>medicines</strong>.> Launch of the first global training programmeon GMP to improve the quality of <strong>medicines</strong>production worldwide.> Creation of a programme for qualityassessment for priority products(prequalification) which now covers HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria.> Expansion of the WHO InternationalProgramme for Monitoring Drug Safety, whichalso marked its 25 th year and now extends to72 countries.OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTEDOUTCOMES FOR 2004-2007The WMS 2004-2007 retains the same fourobjectives as the previous <strong>strategy</strong>, but dividesexpected outcomes <strong>int</strong>o seven components.These objectives and components reflect whatis needed in countries to achieve the essential<strong>medicines</strong> vision. WHO’s work for the nextfour years is then defined in terms of support forcountries to achieve these aims.> Revision of the essential <strong>medicines</strong> selectionprocess to ensure a more evidence-based,independent, and transparent process.Reasons for selection are published on theWHO Medicines Library website, togetherwith comparative information on prices andthe WHO Model Formulary.> Development of comprehensive trainingprogrammes on rational use of <strong>medicines</strong>,including programmes on problembasedtherapy, rational use in communityprescribing, pharmacoeconomics, and drugsand therapeutics committees.> Launch of a campaign to raise awarenessabout the dangers of counterfeit andsubstandard <strong>medicines</strong>.
