Management modelA model of peoplemanagementgeared toprofessionaldevelopmentThe model of people management at <strong>BBVA</strong> is geared above all to professional development. Itis a model whose target is to generate the appropriate conditions for professional growth.But it is not enough to provide opportunities and challenges. There has to be support for peopledur<strong>in</strong>g their growth process. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plays a key role here. It is <strong>in</strong> fact another differentiat<strong>in</strong>gfeature of <strong>BBVA</strong> and a basic element for the development of talent. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is conceived of <strong>in</strong>the Group as an <strong>in</strong>vestment, with a two-fold objective:• As a response to customer needs, with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>BBVA</strong> customer-centric corporate culture.• As a response to the <strong>in</strong>dividual needs of all the professionals who work <strong>in</strong> the Group, with theaim of promot<strong>in</strong>g their professional development.In <strong>2012</strong>, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Group became more focused on the l<strong>in</strong>es for action that make up theCampus <strong>BBVA</strong> model. A specialized and global tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g system has been designed, cont<strong>in</strong>uouslyaligned with and adapted to the Bank’s strategy. The importance given by <strong>BBVA</strong> to tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g isclear from the more than €40m <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> <strong>2012</strong>. At the same time, the global nature of theOrganization means that tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> languages is an essential element, with <strong>in</strong>vestment ofmore than €3m. The <strong>in</strong>terest of people <strong>in</strong> their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is reflected by the more than 400,000<strong>in</strong>dividual development actions implemented <strong>in</strong> the last competence assessment process, thusdemonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that the commitment to professional development is mutual. In the f<strong>in</strong>al analysis,it also materializes <strong>in</strong> tangible aspects, such as:• Around 20% of the people <strong>in</strong> <strong>BBVA</strong> are promoted every year.• Campus <strong>BBVA</strong> received the award for “Innovation <strong>in</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Innovation and Technology(IT)” from the consultancy Greenlight Project Management <strong>in</strong> March <strong>2012</strong>. The awardrecognizes <strong>BBVA</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>novative IT courses, which makes Campus <strong>BBVA</strong> a benchmark fortra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the global f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>dustry.• <strong>BBVA</strong> Group has received the award for “Best Tra<strong>in</strong>er of Professionals <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a” <strong>in</strong> January<strong>2012</strong> from the Ch<strong>in</strong>a Club. It recognizes the Bank as the best tra<strong>in</strong>er of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese professionals,highlight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>BBVA</strong>’s work <strong>in</strong> attract<strong>in</strong>g talent <strong>in</strong> the Asian country.In addition, mak<strong>in</strong>g use of the advantages offered by new technologies, e-learn<strong>in</strong>g is becom<strong>in</strong>gthe ma<strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g channel <strong>in</strong> the Group. In <strong>2012</strong>, it provided 5.4 million hours of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, 63% ofthe total. Technology is thus becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly important, and is ensur<strong>in</strong>g a more efficientand flexible distribution of content. This medium gives the Group a tool for global learn<strong>in</strong>g, withthe efficiency derived from mass distribution, but with content developed or adapted locally.26 Executive summary
