CITY OF LAKEVILLEPOSITION DESCRIPTIONPOSITION TITLE:DEPARTMENT:ACCOUNTABLE TO:<strong>Police</strong> <strong>Officer</strong><strong>Police</strong>Patrol SergeantPRIMARY OBJECTIVE: responsible for the protection <strong>of</strong> life and property,maintaining and restoring public order, prevention <strong>of</strong> crimes, apprehension <strong>of</strong>criminals, and enforcement <strong>of</strong> laws and ordinances in accordance with rules andregulations.Major Areas <strong>of</strong> Accountability:1. Respond to police calls and/or emergencies, both <strong>of</strong>f-duty and on-duty, asdirected. Operate vehicles properly under both emergency and tacticalconditions.2. Handle arrest situations and procedures as appropriate. This may include theapprehension <strong>of</strong> violators or providing appropriate warnings to suspects.3. Monitor and control hazardous roadway conditions and perform immediate actionto remedy hazardous conditions; enforce traffic laws and other ordinances; andassist stranded motorists.4. Respond to traffic accidents and triage scenes. Provide rescue help andemergency first aid treatment as necessary and provide support to other agenciesas directed.5. Conduct initial review <strong>of</strong> investigations including taking statements and gatheringinformation or physical evidence as required. Serve warrants and subpoenas asdirected.6. Respond and react to various complaints and calls for assistance as appropriate ordirected.7. Complete required reports and related documents for investigations, accidents,and preparation for court.2/2012


8. Interact with victims, witnesses, survivors, and outside agencies in order tomaintain effective community relations. Communicate appropriate information tohelp make the public aware <strong>of</strong> special areas <strong>of</strong> concern.9. Monitor and report on vehicle condition and appearance. Request necessaryrepairs. Restock vehicle with supplies when appropriate.10. Performs such other duties as are consistent with the tasks <strong>of</strong> the position and asmay be assigned by the Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>Police</strong>, his designee, or the <strong>City</strong>.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:• Associates degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field along withtwo years equivalent work experience or a bachelor’s degree.• Eligible to be licensed as a peace <strong>of</strong>ficer by the Minnesota Board <strong>of</strong> Peace <strong>Officer</strong>s’Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).• Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license.• Must successfully complete a physical exam, psychological exam, drug and alcoholscreening and background investigation. No felony convictions.• Knowledge <strong>of</strong> State Statutes and local ordinances.• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.• Knowledge and experience in computer operations, including word processing.• Ability to cope with situations pr<strong>of</strong>essionally, courteously and tactfully and withrespect for the rights <strong>of</strong> the citizen.• Ability to acquire skill in the use and care <strong>of</strong> firearms.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:• Knowledge <strong>of</strong> modern police service delivery and investigation methods andprocedures.• Knowledge <strong>of</strong> recent developments, current literature and sources <strong>of</strong> informationregarding modern police methods, techniques, and records.2/2012
