2. Each request for full participation by all students, regardless of academicstanding, in a curricular activity shall be granted if the principal, superintendent,and the local Board of Education approve participation in the activity as anextension of a course(s) requirement(s) and it is an event sanctioned by astate/national subject matter association.3. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this policy, student participation inextracurricular activities offered by the school through math, science, band,choral, music, and other courses at events such as athletic events (pregame,game, halftime, or other breaks), club conventions, parades, amusement parktrips and competitions, trips by tour companies, performances at variousmeetings, etc., are extracurricular, and students academically ineligible underthis policy shall not be allowed to participate.4. Decisions on a student’s participation in extracurricular activities shall bedeveloped and reached consistent with the requirements of the IDEA and itsimplementing regulations, as well as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of1973, if the student is identified as eligible under these statutes, rules, andregulation, and such participation is determined to be appropriate.This policy is effective for all students in Grade 8-12 beginning with the 1999-2000school year with their eligibility determined by grades earned during the 1998-99 schoolyear and 1999 summer school, and shall remain in effect for each succeeding year inthe same format as described herein.Adopted: 7/30/96Revised: 9/25/97; 6/24/994.15FIELD TRIPS AND EXCURSIONSThe Board recognizes that educational field trips and excursions to various typesof competitions for instructional purposes provide desirable learning experiences. TheBoard further recognizes the value of trips related to band, athletic, and similarextracurricular activities. Consistent with this philosophy, the Board establishes thefollowing policy guidelines and otherwise delegates to the Superintendent responsibilityand authority to develop specific administrative procedures governing field trips andexcursions.A. Field Trips for Academic Enrichment1. Field trips for academic enrichment must be educationally justified anddirectly related to the instructional program and objectives at the time ofthe trip. Appropriate instructional activities shall precede and/or followeach field trip.2. Each school faculty, under the leadership of the principal, shall developand submit to the curriculum coordinator by the end of the first attendanceperiod of each school year a school-wide plan governing academic fieldtrips for the year. The purpose of the plan shall be to maximize theeducational value of field trips and prevent waste of system resources.The plan shall identify generally the academic field trips to be taken by
