4 Musculoskeletal <strong>risks</strong>Personal/<strong>in</strong>dividual behaviour measures• How people act <strong>and</strong> behave <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work environment can greatly affect slips <strong>and</strong>trips. It is <strong>the</strong> employer’s obligation to ensure maximum order at <strong>the</strong> workplace,to elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong>se causes for accidents at source <strong>and</strong> to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a safe conduct.Information, <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>and</strong> supervision can help to re<strong>in</strong>force such a safe conduct ofworkers. It is <strong>the</strong> worker’s responsibility to cooperate with <strong>the</strong> employer.Where possible, <strong>the</strong> aim should be to elim<strong>in</strong>ate risk at source (e.g. use of appropriate floor material,levell<strong>in</strong>g uneven floor surfaces). The next preferred option is substitution (e.g. us<strong>in</strong>g analternative method of floor clean<strong>in</strong>g), followed by separation (e.g. us<strong>in</strong>g barriers to keep workersaway from wet floors). The next prevention measure is protection (e.g. wear<strong>in</strong>g footwearwith nonslip soles). The f<strong>in</strong>al measure is provision of <strong>in</strong>formation for <strong>the</strong> workers. The use ofpersonal protective equipment <strong>and</strong> provision of <strong>in</strong>formation should be a last form of protectionafter all organisational <strong>and</strong> technical measures have been exhausted.Important to notePut <strong>in</strong> a management systemPlan:Work with your workers (representative sample of men, women, elder <strong>and</strong> disabledworkers) <strong>and</strong> possibly with patients <strong>and</strong> visitors to identify potential problem areas<strong>and</strong> set goals for improvement.Tra<strong>in</strong>:Give your workers <strong>the</strong> knowledge to identify <strong>and</strong> take action over potential <strong>risks</strong>.Organise:Make workers responsible for specific areas, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g clean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> contract staff, asfar as this is reasonable <strong>and</strong> legal.Control:Ensure work<strong>in</strong>g practices <strong>and</strong> processes are be<strong>in</strong>g carried out properly <strong>and</strong> keep arecord of all clean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance work.Monitor <strong>and</strong> review:Talk to your workers (representative sample of men, women, older <strong>and</strong> disabled staff)<strong>and</strong> possibly to patients <strong>and</strong> visitors so <strong>the</strong>y can provide feedback on how measuresare work<strong>in</strong>g. If necessary take fresh action.163
