Company profileSchramberg-Tennenbronn siteThe company was founded in 1938 in Tennenbronn byChristian <strong>Schneider</strong>. Roland <strong>Schneider</strong> has been the ManagingDirector and Proprietor since 1978. His son Christian<strong>Schneider</strong> joined the Executive Board along with Frank Großin 2010. Production of ballpoint refills was started in 1949and since 1990 the company has produced writing instrumentsonly.The company headquarters in the health resort Schramberg-Tennenbronn covers a surface area of 27,155 m², of whichan area of 11,084 m² is sealed. Due to the multi-storeyconstruction of the premises, 27,500 m² is available forproduction and administration. The River “Schiltach“, partiallybuilt over, flows through the company grounds, a designatedindustrial state. Extensive measures have been takento ensure ecologically compatible integration of the entirecompany into its natural surroundings.A total of 317 staff are employed in development, laboratory,construction design, tool manufacture, production, marketing,sales, purchasing and administration. Technical product explanationsWriting systems with ink reservoirCartridge systemsX-traJobInk pens and rollerballs with regulator are produced atWernigerode, as are markers with tampon reservoir and inkcartridges.Ink pens and rollerballs with ink regulatorThe ink is stored without a tampon (liquid ink system). Theregulator controls the flow of ink to the writing tip as wellas balancing out pressure and temperature fluctuations (leakprotection). The advantages of regulator technology are theprecise and even flow of ink and the fact that the large supplyof ink is used up entirely. Plastics are mainly used for theseproducts.Metals are used for nibs, writing tips and clips. Theinks are water soluble.Ink cartridgesStandard ink cartridges are produced which fit ink pens androllerballs made by <strong>Schneider</strong> and other manufacturers.Rollerball cartridges are also made which are already fittedwith a writing tip. This means that the tip is also replacedalong with the cartridge, since it is especially susceptible towear. Use of the writing instrument is thus no longer limiteddue to decrease in quality.Markers with tampon reservoirHighlighters are mainly produced in Wernigerode. The barrelsare mainly made of polypropylene (PP). Reservoirs (fibrebundles which absorb and contain the ink) and writing tipsare made of polyester. Company portraitWernigerode siteIn 1991 <strong>Schneider</strong> acquired the former VEB Heiko, the EastGerman ink pen brand. This put <strong>Schneider</strong> in possession ofthe latter's regulator technology for liquid ink systems withouttampon reservoir. A newly built production and administrationfacility went into operation on the Stadtfeld industrialestate in 1992. The site has a total surface area of 22,890m², of which 8,515 m² is used for buildings with floor spaceof 10,000 m². In Wernigerode work is mainly done ondeveloping regulator technology and producing the writinginstruments which use this technology. For reasons of space,some markers with tampon reservoir have been moved fromTennenbronn to Wernigerode. Production techniques1. Plastic mouldingPolypropylene (PP) is the most widely used raw material forboth casings and mechanical parts. The remainder is accountedfor by environmentally compatible and recyclable thermoplasticssuch as ABS, POM, PET and SAN. We do not usePVC. <strong>Schneider</strong> recycles its materials directly at the injectionmoulding machines, i.e.burrs and rejects are immediatelyground and fed back into the manufacturing process. Numerouscomponents are manufactured 100% from internally recycledmaterial. The use of new fully electric injection mouldingmachines has enabled energy savings of up to 25%.Noise emissions have also been reduced. The higher precisionof the injection moulding processes allows for increased performanceand quality which results in fewer rejects and thusless waste. System-inherent cooling of the injection mouldsand machines uses water, which is re-cooled by cooling towersin Wernigerode and by a stream in Tennenbronn. Usingmodern heat recovery equipment in the water and ventilationsystems, a large portion of the waste heat in Tennenbronn isre-used for heating purposes.2. Tool and equipment manufactureEach site has its own tooling and equipment manufacture facilitieswith the appropriate machinery.The injection moulds used in the plastic moulding shops arevirtually all made internally by <strong>Schneider</strong>, but in some casesmoulds are produced especially for customers. The mainprocessing methods used in the manufacture of the mouldsand tools are as follows:• Metal-cutting processes with geometrically defined and undefinedcutting such as turning, milling, drilling, galling andgrinding. Water- emulsifiable cooling lubricants are amongthose used.• Spark erosion processes such as sinker or wire-cut EDM.Here either oils or deionised water are used as a dielectric.• Assembly processesAssembly departments/ink cartridge manufacture<strong>Schneider</strong> writing instruments are mainly assembled on fullyautomated assembly lines. Automatic controls integrated inthe assembly process detect malfunctions immediately, therebyhelping to avoid rejects. As a rule, barrel housing componentsare assembled by screw, snap or push connections.Friction or ultrasonic welding is used for permanent connections,so adhesives containing solvents can be dispensed withalmost entirely. Ink pastes for ballpoint pens and refills aresupplied in metal or plastic containers. After being emptied,these are fed back into the material cycle. Inks are dispensedfrom reusable containers with a capacity of up to 1000 litres.An additional automatic washing station is integrated in themanufacturing process for ink cartridges.4. Printing of writing instrumentsFor specific target groups (including advertising customers),writing instruments are printed with images, company logosor other information. In the case of small series this isdone by pad or screen printing. Here inks containing solventsare used. For large series. hot stamping or film transfer techniquesare employed. Each site manufactures its own films,plates and screens as required.In order to minimise employee exposure to solvent emissions,the latter are extracted directly at the workplace by means ofventilation units.5. Tip productionOn special rotary machines the brass, nickel silver or stainlesssteel blanks and wires are turned into tips for paste, inkor gel writing instruments and fitted with spheres. Swarf andcutting oils are then removed in a purification unit. Some tipsare dry-treated without subsequent cleaning. By using an integrateddistillation unit, <strong>Schneider</strong> has significantly reducedthe need for solvents over the past few years.Tips for ink ballpoint pens are also made from plastic or ametal/plastic combination. In the production of the combinedtips, the metal blanks are placed in the injection mould andovermoulded with plastic.6. Ink feeder manufactureTo achieve the very best writing quality, it is very importantto ensure precise harmonisation between the chemical-physicalproperties of the ink, ink feeder and writing tip. <strong>Schneider</strong>is the only German manufacturer to have set up its ownink feeder production facility, providing control over the maincomponents during the manufacturing process, Here polyesteryarns are bundled together with special resins and bondedunder thermal conditions. In subsequent manufacturingstages the ink feeders are cut to size according to theirintended use and given different bevels. The grinding dustthereby produced is extracted by filter units7. Finishing plantIn order to deburr metal parts prior to further processing ormake them shine, they are rotated against each other by vibrationin vibratory vessels. Depending on requirements, wateris used in conjunction with various additives (so-calledcompounds) or abrasives. The resulting metal grinding sludgeis precipitated, flocculated, filtered and then disposed of. Thewaste water produced is analysed, treated and passed intothe sewage system. Waste water treatment takes place at anapproved plant (indirect feeder).16 <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Declaration</strong>

<strong>Environmental</strong> impactProduct materialDifferent types of plastics, metals, pastes and inks areprocessed. Plastics are obtained as granulates for injectionmoulding and also as tubing, yarn or fibres. <strong>Schneider</strong> mainlyuses polypropylene (PP), followed by the plastics ABS andSAN. PVC is not used.The metals stainless steel, nickel silver and brass are purchasedeither as wire or tubes. In general, the various wiresare used to manufacture writing tips but they are also usedto make springs for the refills. The tubing is utilised for manufacturingrefills. Carbide metals (tungsten carbide) are usedin small amounts, as are ceramics. Tool steels, copper andaluminium are processed in the tool and equipment manufacturingdepartments.Depending on the intended use, various pastes, inks and gelsare used as writing media. In order to preclude environmentaldamage, combustible or water pollutant materials are storedin special rooms with drain pans in accordance with legalrequirements.PackagingFor folding boxes and disposable displays we nearly exclusivelyuse carton quality GD2 with a recycled paper content ofat least 80%. Meanwhile, permanent displays can be madefrom plastic, wood, metal or glass. Shipment is in corrugatedcardboard cartons, usually on Euro pallets, and protected bystretch film. Disposable pallets are also used for shipmentpurposes. Carton and wood account for approx. 90% of thetotal packaging used.<strong>Schneider</strong> cooperates with various authorised service providersfor the disposal of packaging at the trade and consumerlevels.Sales of writing instruments for private use and partially alsofor small businesses are shifting more and more from theadvisory specialised dealer to self-service stores. To meet therequirements for product information, sales promotion andtheft prevention for this distribution channel, the writing instrumentsare increasingly packed in so-called blisters. Blistercards are usually used which have a minimum recycled papercontent of 80%. Harmless paints are used for the heat-sealablecoating. The blister covers are made from environmentallycompatible and recyclable PET.Waste in WernigerodeThe average annual share of recyclable waste in Wernigerodeis over 85%. The largest contributors to waste are cartonand production waste (an assortment of plastic waste andother writing instrument components). Some plastic waste isrecycled externally.The main types of waste sent for disposal are domestic-typecommercial refuse and oil-contaminated operating materials.Auxiliary and operating materials in TennenbronnThe auxiliary and operating materials are mainly cutting andhydraulic oils, additives for the grinding unit, cleaning agentsand solvents.A cleaning unit in accordance with 2. BlmSchV usingtrichloroethylene (chlorinated hydrocarbon) is employed fordegreasing metal tips. This unit is regarded by <strong>Schneider</strong> asbeing highly critical due to the cleaning agent used, but it isindispensable due to the extreme cleaning requirements.Unfortunately, past substitution attempts using water-basedcleaning agents or plasma processes did not not producethe desired results. However, we will continue to observe themarket so as to be able to replace this process in due course.Various measures have been implemented in recent yearsto mitigate the environmental impact, with solvent emissionsbeing reduced by the factor 10. For example, the unituses a cyclical process featuring integrated solvent recycling.The vapour recovery system precludes any danger from thesolvent to employees and the environment during filling andemptying of the unit. The entire unit is installed on a drainpan so as to protect the ground water.The supply of newproduct and the return of used solvent for recycling is carriedout using approved safety containers, so-called SafeChemcontainers. The integrated distillation unit has brought abouta considerable reduction in the required annual supply ofnew solvent.Materials possessing water pollutant or other hazardousproperties are treated and stored in accordance with legalrequirements. The consumption of auxiliary and operatingmaterials in Tennenbronn has been reduced continuouslyover the past years. Over the years, average consumption hasdropped from approx. 23 tons to some 14 tons. This trend ismainly due to a reduction in material diversity and machineryupgrades. Peaks occurring at five-year intervals can largely beaccounted for by oil replacement for machines.Waste in TennenbronnThe main components of the waste in Tennenbronn areplastics, metals, paper and carton, with these three groupsaccounting for over 80% of production waste. The averageannual percentage of recyclable waste exceeds 90%.Domestic-type commercial refuse accounts for most of thewaste.The solvent used in the chlorinated hydrocarbon cleaningstation is taken back by the manufacturer.28 <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Declaration</strong>


Auxiliary and operating materials in WernigerodeThe auxiliary and operating materials in Wernigerode arelargely hydraulic, machine and drilling oils for the injectionmoulding machines and for tool manufacture, as well assmall amounts of cleaning agents and solvents for the assemblyand printing departments.Energy consumption in TennenbronnElectricity100% of the electricity consumed in Tennenbronn comesfrom hydroelectric power. To some extent, self-generatedelectricity is used from the combined heat and power unit(gas CHP). In addition a photovoltaic system was installed onthe company building towards the end of 2006 which nowhas an output of 33 kWp.All in all, <strong>Schneider</strong> operates photovoltaicsystems with a total output of over 100 kWp, feedingsome of their power into the grid.The principal consumer of electrical power at <strong>Schneider</strong>'sTennenbronn site is the plastic moulding department. Hereplastic granulate is heated so it can be injected into metalmoulds. In order to achieve good working conditions in allwork areas, comprehensive ventilation systems were installedas part of the last facility expansions as well as older partsof the building.This too has led to a slight increase in powerconsumption over the past few years. However, the additionalpower requirement is mainly due to significantly increasedproduction.Heating plants• The building is heated using a modern condensing gasboiler with LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), with only thecanteen area still being heated using small amounts ofheating oil. The LPG store is an approved installation inaccordance with 4. BlmSchV (Federal Emissions ProtectionAct). The underground storage tank has a capacity of 48tons of LPG.• The combined heat and power unit, installed in 1998 andfuelled by LPG, was supplemented with another slightlysmaller unit and significantly increases energy yield. Thepower and heat generated are fed into the in-house grid.• Heat is recovered effectively from waste heat in the plasticmoulding shop via a rotary air-to-air heat exchanger as wellas from the newly installed ventilation unit in the manufacturingdepartments.• Heat recovery at the compressor unit heats the processwater throughout the entire year.Heating for buildings• The factory at Wernigerode does not have its own dedicatedheating system. District heating from the public utilitycompany is used to heat the buildings.• In Wernigerode, too, the process water is heated throughoutthe year by heat recovery from the compressors.• Various constructional alterations were made to optimisethe grid so as to integrate recovered heat into the heatingsystem as well.• The newly completed warehouse is heated by means ofwaste heat from the plastic moulding shop.Water/waste water in TennenbronThe potable water comes exclusively from the company'sown springs. It is largely used in the sanitary areas, with smallamounts also required for ink feeder manufacture and inthe grinding shop. In the injection moulding unit the mouldsand machines are cooled indirectly with water from the RiverSchiltach via a heat exchanger in the cooling water system.Water for re-cooling is taken from the stream and purifiedusing silica sand filters. It is heated in the heat exchanger andthen fed back ínto the River Schiltach without loss and withoutthe addition of chemicals.The waste water is made up ofthe used potable water, the re-cooling water returned to theRiver Schiltach and a small amount of waste water from thegrinding unit (indirect feed).Water/ waste water in WernigerodeOnly potable water is obtained and used from the publicwaterworks as fresh water. It is used in the sanitary areas, forthe manufacture of inks and to top up the cooling water systemof the plastic moulding shop and the eroding machines.Waste water is produced in the sanitary areas and as rinsingresidues in the cleaning of ink containers and ink cartridges.NoiseNew measurements were carried out after the limits for noiseareas were lowered. Here it was discovered that noise pollutionis possible in the plastic moulding and tip productiondepartments at the Tennenbronn site. In order to offer maximumhearing protection, each employee was issued withspecially fitted ear protectors. Suitable ear protectors are alsoavailable for employees in departments without noise areas.No noise pollution can be detected outside the buildings.Energy consumption in WernigerodeElectricityAt <strong>Schneider</strong>'s Wernigerode site, too, the main consumer ofelectrical energy is the plastic moulding shop.As in Tennenbronn, the plastic granulate is likewise heatedand injected into moulds. Further major energy consumersare the compressors and cooling units. Since the beginning of2010 this site has also run 100% on hydroelectric power.<strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Declaration</strong> 29


<strong>Environmental</strong> impactEmissionsAt the Tennenbronn site, emissions are largely due to theheating units and the two CHP units. Emissions from thechlorinated hydrocarbon cleaning station are mainly withheldby active carbon filters, ensuring that levels are within theapproved thresholds. Most emissions in Wernigerode do notoccur directly at the <strong>Schneider</strong> site but on the premises ofthe district heating supplier. At both locations emissions areproduced in small amounts by solvents, thinners and printinginks in the screen print unit, as well as by the small companyvehicle fleet.
