A Message from the President and Executive Director
Dear Friends,
The Fairmount Park Conservancy is excited to celebrate its 10 th anniversary this year.
Since 2001, we are pleased to have raised over $20 million for the Fairmount Park
system. The Conservancy is committed to the re‐establishment of the Fairmount Park
system as the leading urban park system in the world. Fundamentally, we believe that
parks have the power to change people. Where there are great parks, the potential
exists for great neighborhoods and a great community. A revitalized Fairmount Park is
central to Philadelphia’s ability to achieve its potential to be a world class city.
In 2010, significant momentum was developed for several of our most significant
projects. The Conservancy commenced the revitalization of Hunting Park, a
comprehensive project that will transform this 87‐acre park into a green, stabilizing
anchor for its surrounding North Philadelphia community. This multi‐phase project will
revitalize Hunting Park’s amenities and provide area residents the opportunity to
experience the outdoors, participate in enhanced recreational programs, and bolster
the health, safety, quality of life and sense of community within the Hunting Park
neighborhood.
The Fairmount Park Conservancy’s longest running program, Growing the
Neighborhood, also completed its sixth year. Established in 2004 in partnership with
ACE Group and NovaCare Rehabilitation, Growing the Neighborhood transforms parks
throughout the city of Philadelphia, teaming corporate support with community vigor to
showcase how crucial parks are to the infrastructure of neighborhoods. In 2009,
through Growing the Neighborhood, capital improvements were made at Concourse
and Centennial Lakes in the Centennial District of West Fairmount Park.
Lastly, in what was our single most successful fundraising event to date, the 2010
Centennial Celebration raised over $420,000 for the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Over
450 supporters attended the Celebration, which honored long‐time Fairmount Park
stewards John K. Binswanger and Edith R. Dixon. It was also the first major event to be
held at the newly renovated Horticulture Center, a green venue which we are very
pleased to have reopened for public and private events.
As we enter our tenth year, the Conservancy continues to advance our mission: To
enhance the quality of life of the Greater Philadelphia Region through the financial
support of the Fairmount Park system. We thank our supporters and look forward to
the challenges ahead.

FY2010 Project Highlights
Revitalization of Hunting Park
Hunting Park is a section of Fairmount Park that is as old as any part of Philadelphia. It
was once a tract of farmland owned by William Penn’s secretary, James Logan in the 18 th
century. This parcel of land would be the site of America’s first horse trotting track and
was acquired by the City of Philadelphia in 1854. Carousels, ice skating ponds, and a
bandstand, where John Philip Sousa was said to have performed, are all a part of its rich
and unique history.
The Hunting Park Revitalization master plan was designed in 2009 to make the 87‐acre
North Philadelphia park a stabilizing force and sustainable means of economic
development for the surrounding neighborhoods. The revitalization effort is inspired by
the idea that a safe and well‐maintained park can strengthen the community by
providing natural health benefits, recreation, and a place for people to gather and enjoy
the type of solidarity and freedom that only open space can provide. Through capital
improvements and innovative programming including recreational fields, new lighting, a
farmers’ market and community garden, the Hunting Park Revitalization project will
substantially impact the health and safety of the Hunting Park community.
Today, Hunting Park is used by neighbors and regional visitors for picnics, youth and
adult sports teams, and after school programs. Despite its rich history and heavy use,
Hunting Park faces many challenges that are common in urban communities: vandalism,
deteriorating facilities, and various safety issues. But through this extraordinary project,
Hunting Park can be reclaimed as a vital resource for the community.
The Revitalization of Hunting Park would not be possible without the leadership and
generous support of our partners and funders: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Cindy
and John Affleck, Anonymous, Citizens Bank, Hon. Darrell L. Clarke, City of Philadelphia,
Comcast, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program,
Convergence Partnership of the Tides Foundation, The Food Trust, Growing the
Neighborhood, The Home Depot, Hunting Park United, Patricia Kind, KaBOOM!, Laura
and Marc McKenna, The McLean Contributionship, State Representative Tony Payton, Jr.,
Hon. Maria D. Quinones‐Sanchez, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Ryan Howard
Family Foundation, and Wells Appel. With their support, $3 million has been raised
towards the Revitalization of Hunting Park. Contributions are still needed to reach the

The Horticulture Center Renovation
In spring of 2010, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, in partnership with Mrs. F. Eugene
Dixon and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, supported the renovation of The
Horticulture Center in the Centennial District of West Fairmount Park, allowing the
Center to once again be open for public and private events. The Fairmount Park
Conservancy kicked off this effort by holding its Centennial Celebration fundraising
dinner at the Horticulture Center in April of 2010.
Renovation of the Horticulture Center allows for memorable events to take place
within Fairmount Park. Such a unique setting, just minutes from Center City, will
become an asset for Fairmount Park as a premiere event venue with catering by
Stephen Starr Events. A renovated Horticulture Center will also offer the opportunity
for visitors to better understand the horticulture of the Park and region, while
providing a dynamic gathering place for park volunteers.
A crucial aspect of the Horticulture Center’s renovation was the focus on sustainable
and environmentally conscious construction. 84% of debris removed during the
renovation has been recycled, and steadfast efforts were made to reuse and recycle
materials that make up flooring, walls, ceilings, and other features of the site.

Growing the Neighborhood Year Six: Concourse and Centennial Lakes
The Fairmount Park Conservancy’s longest running program, Growing the
Neighborhood continues to emphasize the role parks play in recreation,
stewardship efforts, and community cohesion in the city and region.
Established in 2004 in partnership with ACE Group and NovaCare
Rehabilitation, Growing the Neighborhood has revitalized twelve
neighborhood parks, reconnecting people with their parks all over the City
of Philadelphia.
Growing the Neighborhood emphasizes the immense role clean, green
open space plays in sustaining vibrant communities, increasing property
values, and attracting new business and residents. Since its inception,
Growing the Neighborhood has leveraged over $1 million in additional
support from public and private sectors.
In 2009 Growing the Neighborhood’s focus was on Concourse and
Centennial Lakes in the Centennial District of West Fairmount Park. ACE
Group and NovaCare Rehabilitation, PRWT Services, Inc., U.S. Facilities,
Inc., and The Albert J. Lofgren & Antoinette Farrar Seymour Donor‐
Advised Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation, provided over $100,000 for
capital improvements to the area.
Major restoration work was completed in Concourse Lake, where a marsh
area was also formed to introduce a number of native plants to enhance
the lake’s ecology. Year Six of Growing the Neighborhood was successful
in bringing a positive impact to the West Parkside neighborhood, which
borders West Fairmount Park. By engaging the community and bringing in
corporate support, the improvements garnered will attract more families
into the park and make the park a safer and more hospitable environment
for all to enjoy. The restoration of Concourse Lake will be a centerpiece
for years to come in the continuous revival of West Fairmount Park.
The Centennial District of
West Fairmount Park
In 1876, Philadelphia hosted America’s first world’s fair,
the Centennial Exhibition, to celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the
Declaration of Independence. The Exhibition was held on a 285‐acre
swath of Fairmount Park, filled with 250 buildings. Nearly
10,000,000 visitors attended the Exhibition during its six month run,
which was roughly 20 percent of America’s population.
In 2005, a Master Plan developed by civic leaders of Philadelphia outlined a 20 year plan to invest $300 million in the
Centennial District of West Fairmount Park, which would commemorate the historical significance of the Centennial
Exhibition of 1876. This 733‐acre span will provide recreational and cultural services and amenities to people who visit and
use that area of West Fairmount Park as a means of enhancing the economic and cultural redevelopment within the
Centennial District and its surrounding neighborhoods.
The completion of the Centennial District Master Plan is targeted for 2026 to coincide with the 250 th anniversary of the
Declaration of Independence, celebrating the birth of the Nation with the rebirth of the District and its surrounding
neighborhoods as the model for 21 st century urban environment.
