Veterans’ Week - this year is no different. 

During this week, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies 

and events will take place across the country to recognize 

the achievements of our Veterans and honour those who 

made the ultimate sacrifice. 

This Veterans’ Week, take the remembrance challenge. 

There are many ways to show that you remember and 

honour our Veterans: 

•Pin a poppy above your heart. 

•Attend the local Remembrance Day ceremony. 

•Talk to a friend or relative who has just returned home 

from Afghanistan or who served in other areas of conflict. 

•Listen to Veterans talk about their experiences.

fun and safe Halloween! 

Our little preschoolers 

were adorable in their 

costumes for their parties! 

I would like to thank 

everyone who came out 

for our Annual General 

Meeting. It’s a good 

way to find out what is happening here at the Community 

Centre and to voice your opinion. We are looking for a few 

more board members so if you are interested please give us 

a call at the office. 

There are lots of exciting things happening and coming up in 

the next couple of months! Indoor soccer is in full swing and 

will finish up before Christmas. Ball Hockey will start in the 

second week of January so watch our website to sign up and 

if you would like to coach that would be great!! It is only 

an hour or so a week and it means so much to the children. 

Give it a try; no experience needed! 

We still need several volunteers to help with the casino on 

November 28 and 29th so please call us at the office and we 

will give you any information that you might need. You do 

not need any experience. 

Our Children’s Christmas Party is on December 1st and 

will be lots of fun with Comedian Ventriloquist, Val Hilliker 

performing and Children’s music specialist, Richard Hertert 

singing carols with the children! Of course, we will have a 

visit from Old St. Nick himself and each child will receive 

a gift! There will be a light meal, crafts, raffles and lots of 

fun for everyone! The tickets are $15.00 per child, aged 

0-12, and they will be receiving a gift. Everyone else is free!! 

Don’t be disappointed; get your tickets early so you don’t 

miss out! Tickets are available in the office during office 

hours, 9-4:30 or give us a call to make other arrangements.

Our last Movie in the Gym, September 8th, was lots of 

fun! Our next Movie in the Gym will be on December 8th 

and it will be a Christmas movie! There is no charge for 

the movie, but bring your loonies as there will be a loonie 

concession stand. 

We will be having our New Year’s Family Dance on 

December 29th. The tickets are $5.00 per child. All other 

family members are free. Get your tickets early as they will 

be limited and there will be no tickets available at the door.

RINK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! 

Can you volunteer for a few hours this winter? 

We are looking for willing, committed volunteers to help 

maintain the ice at our community rink. No experience 

needed! Training will be provided so volunteers can effectively 

clear the snow and flood the rink as needed. 

With enough volunteers, we will 

be able to keep the ice open all 

winter. Community members will 

be welcome to drop by to teach 

their children to skate or start up a 

little hockey game with friends. It 

can truly be community ice space 

for all to enjoy! 

If you are able to volunteer for a few hours each week – or 

even each month – during the winter, please call the Community

Fall Programs 

HOME ON YOUR OWN (8 – 12 years old) 

Saturday, November 3rd 2:15pm to 4:15pm 

This safety awareness program is a great class that 

teaches children 8 – 12 years old who are mature enough to 

stay home on their own. They will handle non-emergency and 

emergency situations with confidence. This course will also 

talk about age appropriate situations that they may encounter 

outside their home regarding dealing with ”strangers”; how to 

identify them, how to handle certain situations that they may 

encounter and how to stay safe. The course includes games, 

scenarios, role playing and activity book that depict everyday 

situations. This Course is taught by an experienced First Aid 

instructor. Members $30.00 Non-members $45.00 

STRANGER DANGER (4 to 7 years old) 

Saturday, November 3rd 1:00pm to 2:00pm 

This Red Cross Safety course equips children 4 – 7 

years old to recognize and deal with “strangers”; how to trust 

their instincts and how to keep themselves safe. They will learn 

when, who and how to call for help in an emergency as well as 

basic care for injuries until help arrives. People Savers follows 

the motto “Prepare, Stay Safe, Survive”. The class is taught in 

a fun and interactive way, and includes a colouring book to reinforce 

the concepts taught in the course to ensure that children 

remember. This Course is taught by an experienced First Aid 

instructor. Members $25.00 Non-members $40.00 

RED CROSS BABYSITTING COURSE (11 - 15 years old) 

Saturday, November 3rd 10:00am – 4:00pm 

Instructed by Leona Verburg of Medistat 

This babysitting course teaches 11 – 15 year olds 

to confidently handle the responsibilities of being a babysitter. 

They will learn first aid, safety tips and injury prevention for 

children of all ages. They will learn to diaper and feed infants 

as well as some basic business skills. All of this will be taught 

in a fun and interactive environment. Cost includes a babysitter’s 

manual and certificate upon completion of the course. This 

Course is taught by an experienced First Aid instructor. Please 

bring a snack and lunch (peanut and nut free). Bring a stuffed 

bear or doll to class. Members $65 .00 Non-members $80.00

Letters to the Editor 

The following is in response to the letter to the editor sent by 

Elly in the October 2012 edition of the McKenzie Gazette: 

Dear Elly, 

We feel your frustration with the 

situation of certain teenagers living 

on our street. Use of illegal drugs, 

property damage, vehicle breakins, 

disrespect, intimidating the 

younger children are some of the 

things that we have experienced. 

Over the past five months we’ve 

had both of our vehicles broken into 

while parked on the driveway, only to have these people steal 

whatever money might possibly be inside. In talking to other 

families within our street, we find they also have experienced 

similar events. Most disconcerting is their use of illegal drugs 

out in the open with no attempt to conceal or hide their 

actions. Over the past five months or so, the city police have 

been visiting the home of these people. However after the 

police leave, these teenage youths have no problem continuing 

their works of disrespect, break-ins, smoke-ups, etc. as before. 

There obviously is little respect for law and order. 

Elly, what to do with this situation? Our suggestion is to 

continue reporting these events to the Calgary Crime Stoppers 

until something has finally been done about it. Also, keep the 

discussions going with your fellow neighbours as a support 

group until this problem is cleared. You are not alone.

Hello McKenzie Lake Preschool Families! 

October was a fun and busy month at school. We started off by learning about Thanksgiving. We learned about people 

and things that we can be thankful for. The children designed masks, learned songs and created centerpieces for their 

tables. Next we had orange day and explored many fun and creative things to do with the color orange and enjoyed getting 

dressed up in our best orange clothes. Finally we ended the month with amazing Halloween Parties. Everyone looked 

awesome dressed up in their costumes and enjoyed amazing festive treats provided by the parents. Each class did a small 

Halloween performance for their families, which was a big success. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed time chatting and spending 

a spooky afternoon together before a night of Trick or Treating. 

This month we will be looking at Community Helpers. The children will be learning about safety in their home, and safety 

in the community. We will also be looking at specific community helpers such as Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Paramedics, 

Airline Pilots, dental assistants and more. Through this unit we hope that the children will gain a better understanding of 

people and places in their community. 

In addition to all the fun events and activities, the children continue to work on learning their numbers, letters, and letter 

sounds and will continue to be involved in activities that include cooperation and friendship with each other. The preschool 

also has started gym time once per week. We all enjoy the opportunity to run around, play and be silly in a large, fun, and 

safe space.

The RANT 

Here comes winter and there’s great 

news from City Hall: the on-road 

bike lanes will be a number one 

priority for having snow removed. 

Corner 

I love to bike when its 20 above and 

the sky is blue, but I would never want to bike to work every day 

just given the safety, grime, and sweat factors, let alone when it’s 

20 below out or raining. 

I just don’t get those good folks at City Hall, or maybe they don’t 

get me, but I’m not delusional when I say that most folks prefer a 

car, or transit if it’s available, over taking a bike to work in winter. 

You’ve got to love these city planners who cut the number of 

parking spaces in the downtown core to increase alternative 

modes of transport, yet at the same time drag their feet when 

it comes to supplying all corners of the City with rapid transit. 

These same planners are putting the kibosh on all kinds of new 

development because it doesn’t meet the ever-evolving vision 

of the elected folks at City Hall; all of whom get heated parking 

spaces BTW. 

I’ve got news for City Hall, most of us like our cars, especially 

when it’s cold out. Our cars have heated seats, cup holders, and 

radios… plus for those who have the foresight, we can get winter

There’s always some individual from the Roads department who 

has to get on T.V. every time we get more than a few inches of the 

white stuff–to explain why the City goes into total gridlock, and why 

it’s going to take three weeks and the entire snow removal budget 

to clear all the streets. Or, maybe you’ll have to wait till spring… or 

the best one… hope for a Chinook to turn your side street into a 

skating rink (maybe we can all skate to work). 

So, have a great winter everyone, and if you want to avoid those 

clogged snow filled streets this winter just hop on your freezing 

cold bike and head to work on a cleared road. Just wish they 

had Tim Horton’s bike-through on all those paths. Oh, and does 

anyone know where you can get winter tires for your bike?

DEAR BAS FAMILIES 

What a beautiful fall we have had! This year the weather was so great 

that we were able to attend our field trip to the Calgary corn maze. 

The children all had a blast and we will definitely do it again next year. 

During the month of October the children and staff talked about giving 

back and what it meant. All the children agreed that they would like to give back 

to the Calgary Food Bank. We would like to thank all families that participated in 

our food donations to the Calgary Food Bank. They were very happy to see our 

program supporting them. And all the children were very proud of themselves.

A Child's Calendar 

magic (www.motivationalmagic.ca) do a show: “Be Aware 

and Bullying Prevention”. All the children learned a great deal 

about awareness. As all schools were out on the 26th the 

children requested a pj day. So, we did. Everyone - even the 

staff - looked so comfy watching a movie and eating popcorn. 

We had a super fun day on Oct 31st as it was our Halloween 

party. Some children looked spooky, scary and funny. The 

children enjoyed helping with the planning of our activities, 

snacks and decorating. Thanks to the families that helped out 

with snacks. 

In November our focus will be on Health and Nutrition and 

Remembrance Day. Miss Marie will be doing a presentation 

about Remembrance Day as she has served in the Army 

herself. 

We still have a few spaces available in our program for children

Time is the enemy in 

any emergency. You can 

help; EMS, police and fire 

get to the scene quickly 

and safely by following 

the rules of the road. It’s 

important for motorists to 

understand how to safely 

yield right of way to emergency vehicles with lights and siren 

activated so that everyone stays safe. 

What to do when an emergency vehicle 

approaches with lights and siren activated 

• If you’re in the middle of an intersection when an 

emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren 

activated, clear the intersection. 

• On a one or two lane road, motorists should move to the 

right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal. 

• On a road with three or more lanes, motorists should 

move to the nearest side of the road and stop. If driving 

in the centre lane, move to the right side of the road and 

stop. Remember to signal. 

• Come to a complete stop and wait for the emergency 

vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency 

vehicles (there is often more than one) before re-entering 

traffic flow. Remember to signal. 

• Remember, emergency vehicles may need to use any 

available road space to maneuver. This may include the 

use of shoulders and left hand turning lanes to pass other 

traffic. 

While driving on the road 

• Drive defensively at all times. Be attentive to sirens of 

emergency vehicles and be prepared to yield the right of 

way. 

• It is the law for motorists to slow down to at least 60 km/ 

hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when driving in the 

lane next to where an emergency vehicle is stopped. 

• Do not break the rules of the road in order to give right 

of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include 

proceeding through a red light or making an illegal turn. 

Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in the area. 

• Do not drive on or block the shoulder of highways if 

emergency vehicles require it for access. Instead, wait for 

the emergency vehicle to pass before merging safely back 

in to the flow of traffic. 

• Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle and an 

emergency vehicle in case it should stop suddenly.

Pumpkins are withering on front 

stoops and piles of golden leaves 

are being replaced by skiffs of 

snow. As the days shorten and 

the mercury dips, there are 

few things more tempting than 

curling up in an easy chair with a 

blanket, cup of hot cocoa at your 

elbow and a pile of books beside you. But with our busy lives, 

it’s often hard to find that kind of time. It’s especially tough for 

children, whose after-school hours are often packed with sports 

and lessons. 

Calgary Reads has a few suggestions to help you keep your child 

engaged in reading, by using daily activities as an opportunity to 

sneak in some reading. 

Read store signs and road signs. Read the cereal box at the 

breakfast table. Bake cookies, after reading the recipe, of 

course! Keep some books in the car to read on the way to 

lessons or sports. For a treat, listen to books on CD or tape. 

Have a family games night and read the instructions. Read 

comic books. Use internet sites like CBC Kids, Kids Reads 

and Funbrain.com. And of course, have plenty of books in 

your home, which you can borrow from the public and school 

libraries.

Calgary Reads helps kids learn to read. Calgary Reads’ primary 

program trains volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with 

struggling Grade 1 and 2 readers. If you love reading and 

working with children, consider becoming a trained volunteer 

tutor with Calgary Reads. Calgary Reads offers free training 

sessions and tutoring is provided at no cost to families. Read

It is hard to know what to 

do? What happens in their 

relationship is their business, 

right? Will I be meddling if I say 

anything or call for help? 

So often the victims of domestic violence, including children, 

are silenced and they do need your help. You could be the 

person that makes the difference and stop the cycle of abuse. 

This November’s Family Violence Prevention Month campaign 

encourages Albertans to call the Family Violence Info Line at 

(403) 310-1818 and help those affected by family violence. The 

24-hour line is toll-free, available in 170 languages and available 

seven days a week. 

Let’s encourage a community standard in which family violence 

and bullying are wrong. Learn more about abuse, what can 

you do, warning signs, and where to get help. Information & 

resources can be found at www.familyviolence.alberta.ca 

How to Report to the Police 

• Family violence can be very dangerous situations. 

Call the police. Do not engage in the situation. 

• Family violence comes in many forms. It is very 

important if you suspect someone is in need of help 

to report it to the police. Even reporting at a later 

date, after the incident, what you know or suspect 

is beneficial. Never underestimate the value of your 

information. 

Depending on the urgency, choose the method that best suits 

the situation: 

• 911 - Emergencies or crimes in progress 

• (403) 266-1234 - All other crimes must be reported by 

calling the non-emergency line at (403)266-1234. 

The Calgary Police Service encourages 

Calgarians to report all crimes.
