For moreinformation, see Installing StarTeamMPX on Windows on page 53.• For more information about installation and upgrade instructions for StarTeam Workflow Extensions, seeInstalling StarTeam Workflow Extensions on page 67.Evaluating StarTeam ServerThe first time you run StarTeam Server, an evaluation license is created for StarTeam Enterprise Advantage,which is the edition of StarTeam with the largest feature set.Before the 30-day product review period expires, you can extend the evaluation period by contacting BorlandSales for an extended evaluation key, or by contacting your Borland Account team if you have one.Be sure to register the product or extend the evaluation period before it expires. Otherwise, when expiredclients access a server configuration managed by StarTeam Server, no components (such as the file or changerequest component) are available. In the StarTeam Cross-Platform Client, the upper and lower panes haveno tabs.To extend the evaluation period for StarTeam Server:1. After you obtain an extended evaluation key, select Start ➤ Programs ➤ Borland StarTeam ➤ StarTeamServer 2009 ➤ StarTeam Server The Server Administration window opens.2. Select Help ➤ About from the menu bar. The About StarTeam Server dialog box opens.3. Select License in the left pane of the dialog box.4. Click Extend Evaluation. The Extend Evaluation dialog box opens.5. Enter the evaluation key, and click OK.6. Close the About StarTeam Server dialog box.Licensing StarTeam ServerStarTeam Server can be run as an Enterprise or Enterprise Advantage server which have the following features:• StarTeam Enterprise provides a basic feature set, including the StarTeam Server, the Cross-Platform andWeb Clients, LDAP Quick Start Manager, StarTeamMPX (Event Transmitter and Message Broker), andSDK.• StarTeam Enterprise Advantage has all the StarTeam Enterprise features plus the Requirement component,StarTeamMPX (File Transmitter and Cache Agent), and StarTeam Workflow Extensions which includealternate property editors (APEs) that enable you to create custom forms and design workflow rules tocontrol how all the items in a component move from state to state.Which server you have (or more explicitly, what features a client can access on that server) is determined bythe product license.30 | Installing StarTeam Server on Windows
Understanding LicensingLicenses determine how many users can access StarTeam Server. Users can have either named user orconcurrent licenses. A named user license can be used only by the user who has been assigned that license.For example, if you have 5 named user licenses and 25 concurrent licenses, the 5 users who receive thenamed user licenses are guaranteed access to the server. No one else can use their licenses.A concurrent license can be used by any user who does not have a named user license. For example, userswithout named user licenses receive concurrent licenses on a first-come, first-served basis. After all theconcurrent licenses are in use, users attempting to log on are notified that there are no more licenses availableat this time. They can try again later.You can add as many users as you choose, but access to the server is granted only to users with named userlicenses or to users who receive concurrent licenses as they log on.Tip: You can import user information from Active Directory or OpenLDAP and assign users to StarTeamlicense types or license server slips using Borland LDAP QuickStart Manager. Refer to the Borland LDAPQuickStart Manager Administrator Guide for more information. This guide is available on the BorlandStarTeam installation DVD and on the Borland Technical Publications Web site at:http://techpubs.borland.com/starteam/.If you have StarTeam named user licenses, you must assign them to specific users in the User Managerdialog box. Everyone else is assumed to have a StarTeam concurrent license. See the Administering andUsing StarTeam guide for details.If you have Borland licenses, users must be assigned to the correct slip in the User Manager dialog box,regardless of their named or concurrent user status. An additional status, Unassigned, may be used insteadof a slip.The StarTeam Server Administrator is automatically assigned a named user license which cannot be removed.This is a “free” license that is not counted against the number of named user licenses you have available.Using StarTeam LicensingStarTeam Server can be licensed in either of two ways:• StarTeam licensing, also referred to as native licensing, which is internal to the product• Borland licensing available for use with license serversImportant: BLS should be added to the windows firewall exceptions (on the BLS server machine) whenBLS is started as a windows service. Otherwise StarTeam Server will be unable to connect to the BLS.If StarTeam users attempt to access a server configuration that is managed by an unlicensed version ofStarTeam Server, the tabs in the upper and lower panes of their StarTeam clients will not display.Customers buy named Enterprise, concurrent Enterprise, named Enterprise Advantage, or concurrent EnterpriseAdvantage licenses for StarTeam Server. Any client can access any server as long as that server recognizesthe user and has a license for that user. Customers usually choose just one method of licensing: StarTeamnative licensing, Borland License Server licensing, or FLEXnet Publisher licensing, but combinations can besupported. Licensing is handled after the installation, either by setting up a licensing server and putting "slip"files in the StarTeam Server's \Licenses folder (a child of the server's installation folder) or by registeringStarTeam native licenses using the StarTeam Server Administration tool.Because StarTeam Server licenses are stackable, you can enter more than one license key so long as all thelicense keys are for the same edition (Enterprise or Enterprise Advantage).
