The problem of the background<br />
Measurements performed at the n_TOF facility until June 2001 showed that the<br />
background for capture measurements was about two orders of magnitude higher than<br />
tolerable.<br />
The following features had been observed:<br />
- a <strong>st</strong>rong asymmetry in the n_TOF measuring <strong>st</strong>ation<br />
- the presence of a short and a fa<strong>st</strong> component<br />
- an intense prompt pulse also outside the beam<br />
An extensive <strong>st</strong>udy, consi<strong>st</strong>ing in simulations and experimental work, was therefore<br />
undertaken with the following purposes:<br />
- determine the origin of the background<br />
- find a way to reduce it!
