ADMISSION TO THE TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM Undergraduate and graduate students pursuing licensure must be formally accepted into the Teacher Preparation Program. Application for admission to the program should be made during the semester the student expects to complete all the pre-professional requirements listed below (usually at the end of the sophomore year). The deadline for application to the Teacher Preparation Program is the end of the third week of the semester (Fall, Spring, Summer II) in which requirements will be completed. Acceptance into the program is a prerequisite for enrollment in higher-level (300-400) Education courses, including Pre-Student Teaching and Student Teaching. A student who is denied admission into the Teacher Preparation Program will not be permitted to enroll in 300/400 level classes and may: 1. Decide not to enter the program; 2. Verify improvement in the areas of deficiency and reapply at a later date; 3. Appeal to the Teacher Preparation Screening Committee. Appeals must be made in writing within two weeks of the date of the denial letter and must be accompanied by appropriate documentation; or 4. Appeal to the Standards Committee if dissatisfied with the decision of the Teacher Preparation Committee. A listing of the pre-professional requirements can be obtained in the Education Placement Office, Hannon Center, Room #110. PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE All educational coursework, all content area courses, and all required Praxis II content tests must be completed prior to Student Teaching. All students applying for the Teacher Preparation Program and Pre-Student/Student Teaching should be aware that prior criminal convictions, whether or not the conviction has been expunged, can affect the student’s ability to obtain a license to teach in the State of Ohio and/or affect the student’s ability to obtain employment in a pre-school program, public school district or chartered non-public school. It is the student’s responsibility to determine whether he or she is eligible for licensure and/or employment as a teacher in the State of Ohio. Students will be placed in field experiences only after a background check indicates no offenses that would preclude licensure and/or employability in the State of Ohio. On the Ohio Praxis II group of written tests of educational theory and techniques for the 2004/2005 academic year, Walsh University students achieved a pass rate of 100% on the Principles of Learning and Teaching K-3 and 7-12 tests and an 86% pass rate on the 5-9 test. Students who took the Early Childhood Education test passed at a rate of 97%. Of the students who took the Middle Childhood Language Arts test, 100% passed; those students who took the Middle Childhood Social Studies test passed at an 85% rate. The Division of Education’s Teacher Preparation Program enrolled 85 students who completed the program during the 2004-2005 reporting period. LEAD PROGRAM (LICENSURE IN EDUCATION FOR ADULTS WITH DEGREES) A student who has received a Bachelor’s Degree (either a B.A. or B.S.) may add a teaching license to his/her credentials. While the individual programs vary by subject area, most post-baccalaureate students are able to complete licensure preparation courses in four to five semesters by attending classes full-time. Academic advisors will assist students with course selection and scheduling for the specific individual licensure programs offered at Walsh University. Regardless of licensure program, certain commonalities apply to any student who elects to participate in the Teacher Preparation Program.
