SOC 401 Sociological Theory 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Systematic study of major classic and contemporary sociological theorists.<br />
Among areas emphasized are the variety and conflict of orientations<br />
toward society and the image of mankind, empirical support<br />
for explanations, and recent revisions of theoretical schemes. Next<br />

Offered every semester. Requires approval by Division Chair and<br />
Vice President for Academic Affairs.<br />
SPANISH (SPAN)<br />
SPAN 101-102 Elementary Spanish 6 sem. hrs.<br />
Essentials of Spanish enabling the student to achieve basic proficiency<br />
in the language. Emphasis on structure and vocabulary as well as<br />
on cultural elements of the Spanish speaking world. For entrance<br />
into 101 students should have a 101 placement or should not have<br />
studied Spanish previously. For 102, students must have a 102 placement<br />
or have successfully completed 101. Sequence offered every<br />
semester if interest warrants.<br />
SPAN 201-202 Intermediate Spanish 6 sem. hrs.<br />
A thorough review of the language with emphasis on structure and<br />
syntax; special attention to oral proficiency skills. These courses can<br />
be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement of the core curriculum<br />
by students who have had no more than three years of<br />
Spanish at the high school level or the college level equivalent. Final<br />
placement will be based on high school grades and university placement<br />
tests. Prerequisite: SPAN 102 or placement. Sequence offered<br />
every fall/spring; every semester if interest warrants.<br />
SPAN 300 Spanish for Business 3 sem. hrs.<br />
An introduction to key business vocabulary and Latin American cultural<br />
concepts that play a major role in international relations and<br />
trading. This course will focus on reading, conversation and writing<br />
in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or placement.<br />
SPAN 301-302 Advanced Spanish 6 sem. hrs.<br />
Review and study of the more advanced grammatical elements of the<br />
Spanish language emphasizing conversation, reading, and writing.<br />
These courses can be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement<br />
of the core curriculum by students who have had four years or<br />
more of Spanish at the high school level or the college level equivalent.<br />
Final placement will be based on high school grades and university<br />
placement tests. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or placement.<br />

Formerly SPAN 220. Intended for students who wish to develop a<br />
working and practical knowledge of nonliterary Spanish - its nuances<br />
of expression, meaning and style - through practice of everyday patterns<br />
of conversation. This course can be used to satisfy the foreign<br />
language requirement of the core curriculum by students who have<br />
had four years or more of Spanish at the high school level or the college<br />
level equivalent. Final placement will be based on high school<br />
grades and university placement tests. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or<br />

SPAN 308 Readings in Spanish 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Formerly SPAN 221. Directed readings and discussions of selected<br />
literary texts. This course can be used to satisfy the foreign language<br />
requirement of the core curriculum by students who have had four<br />
years or more of Spanish at the high school level or the college level<br />
equivalent. Final placement will be based on high school grades and<br />

SPAN 320 Spanish Civilization 3 sem. hrs.<br />
and Culture<br />
A study of the history of Spain from its origins as a country to the<br />
present day. All aspects of civilization and culture (art, music, dance,<br />
literature) will be incorporated with this historical study in order to<br />
more thoroughly understand the lives of the people of Spain.<br />
