Science Pre-Student Teaching<br />

Interdisciplinary understanding of science, professional, legal, safety<br />

and ethical obligations of teaching science, and problem-solving<br />

approaches for those seeking licensure at the middle level. Course<br />

includes focus on NSTA standards and Ohio Academic Content<br />

Standards, and various instructional strategies, assessment alternatives,<br />

and management techniques appropriate to adolescents learning<br />

science, providing for individual differences. Field experience<br />

included. All coursework and the appropriate Praxis II content<br />

test(s) must be successfully completed in order for student teaching<br />

to occur the following semester. Course to be taken semester<br />

prior to student teaching. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

Social Studies Pre-Student Teaching<br />

Course provides an integrative understanding of the social studies<br />

disciplines and the impact of NCSS standards and Ohio Academic<br />

Content Standards for those seeking licensure at the middle level.<br />

Various instructional strategies and assessment alternatives appropriate<br />

for learning social studies with a developmentally and culturally<br />

responsive curricula are emphasized. Field experience included. All<br />

coursework and the appropriate Praxis II content test(s) must be successfully<br />

completed in order for student teaching to occur the following<br />

semester. Course to be taken semester prior to student teaching.<br />

Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

MUSIC (MUS)<br />

MUS 050 <strong>Walsh</strong> <strong>University</strong> Chorale 1 sem. hr.*<br />

The Chorale is a performing ensemble (open to all) which studies,<br />

rehearses, and presents sacred and secular music from major musical<br />

periods. Performances traditionally include a Christmas Program and<br />

a major Spring Concert. Additionally, the choir enhances various<br />

academic and religious ceremonies and traditions which occur<br />

throughout the academic year. Offered every semester. *Students<br />

may receive a credit hour per semester, regardless of the number of<br />

semesters during which they participate in the Chorale. Students also<br />

may register to take choir for no credit without charge. Does not fulfill<br />

core curriculum music requirement.<br />

MUS 055 Voice 1 sem. hr.*<br />

Applied music instruction. Offered every semester. Prerequisite:<br />

permission of instructor. Does not fulfill core curriculum music<br />

requirement.<br />

MUS 060 Instrumental Music 1 sem. hr.*<br />

The instrumental music ensemble (open to all) rehearses and performs<br />

in concerts and events throughout the semester. *Students may<br />

receive a credit hour per semester regardless of the number of semes-<br />

ters that they participate in the instrumental music ensemble.<br />

Students also may register to take Instrumental Music for no credit<br />

without charge. Does not fulfill core curriculum music requirement.<br />

Introduces the student to perceiving and enjoying music as a listener.<br />

Special attention is given to relating music as a discipline to other<br />

broad disciplines of knowledge. Offered every semester.<br />

MUS 201 Master Choral Works 3 sem. hrs.<br />

A survey of great choral masterpieces down through the centuries.<br />

MUS 202 American Musical Theater 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Focuses on the nature and historical development of American musical<br />

theater and its attendant interdisciplinary implications.<br />

MUS 203 History of Blues & Jazz 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Focuses on the nature and historical development of Blues and<br />

Jazz.<br />

MUS 205 Fundamentals of 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Music Theory<br />

An introduction to the basic elelments of music theory including<br />

music reading, elementary harmony and rhythm. Next offered: TBA.<br />

MUS 210 History of Rock Music 3 sem. hrs.<br />

An examination of the history and evolution of rock music focusing<br />

on social, cultural, and musical aspects of the development of the<br />

genre. Next offered: TBA.<br />

MUS 322 Music Education 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Principles and procedures for teaching music in the elementary<br />

school. Course includes basic elements of music theory to provide<br />

sufficient background for teaching music in the classroom; study of<br />

the child voice and its care; rote songs; materials for rhythmic<br />

expression and listening; teaching skills and methods which classroom<br />

teacher must have to work effectively. Next offered: TBA.<br />

NATURAL SCIENCES (NS)<br />

NS 101 Science and Contemporary 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Health Issues<br />

Primary emphases on facilitating an understanding of the value of<br />

science and the use of the scientific method in problem solving,<br />

exploring the dynamics of human physiology, and evaluating healthrelated<br />

physiological activities. Important health issues and related<br />

contributions from the sciences are investigated. A variety of viewpoints<br />

and theories are examined in depth rather than from any one<br />

particular perspective. Trends in current research are important in<br />

both classroom discussion and course-related projects. Offered every<br />

semester.<br />
