EDUC 263 Multi-Age Physical 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Education Psychology<br />
Learning theories and instructional models are examined from a<br />
practical classroom-based perspective. Emphasis is on interpreting<br />
and integrating educational concepts to address various learning situations<br />
in the classroom setting. Cognitive, social, and personal<br />
development are included as are concepts of motivation, instructional<br />
design and approaches, individual learning style and needs, and<br />
classroom decision-making processes. Prerequisites: EDUC 1<strong>07</strong> and<br />
sophomore standing. Offered every semester.<br />
Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program required prior<br />
to enrollment in 300-/400-level education courses.<br />
EDUC 351 Methods of Teaching 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Developmental Reading<br />
Students examine a wide variety of instructional methods for teaching<br />
reading and writing from early childhood to middle school level.<br />
Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and visualizing are viewed as<br />
interrelated literacy skills. Emphasis is placed on the five essential<br />
components of an effective literacy program: phonetic awareness,<br />
phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students explore a<br />
broad spectrum of reading and writing materials, strategies, and literature,<br />
including electronic texts. Scientifically-based instructional<br />
practices are examined. Field experience required. Offered fall and<br />
spring semesters.<br />
EDUC 352 The Principles & Practices 3 sem. hrs.<br />
of Teaching Phonics<br />
The nature and role of phonics and phonemic awareness within the<br />
meaning-centered reading and writing process are explored, as well<br />
as current research regarding phonics instruction. Lessons are<br />
designed which demonstrate skill in teaching word study at the<br />
early and middle childhood levels. Offered every semester.<br />
EDUC 353 Reading Assessment and 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Intervention<br />
The course focuses on assessment and intervention as part of ongoing<br />
instruction. Case study required. Students work with individuals<br />
in need of reading intervention. Field experience required.<br />
Prerequisites: EDUC 250 or EDUC 354; EDUC 351; and EDUC<br />
352. Offered every semester.<br />
EDUC 354 Reading in the Content Area 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Survey of principles, strategies and practical techniques used to assist<br />
students to deal effectively with reading/ study materials in the content<br />
areas. Emphasis on middle school and AYA education strategies.<br />
Field experience required. Offered every semester.<br />
EDUC 362 Special Topics 1-3 sem. hrs.<br />
An opportunity to present various special courses in education such<br />

Teaching Experience<br />
Theory is implemented along with actual teaching in schools.<br />
Developing skills in methods, procedures, technique is emphasized.<br />
Individual and group conferences are held with the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s supervisor of student teaching and with cooperating<br />
teachers. Prerequisite: all courses leading to licensure. Taken concurrently<br />
with EDUC 466. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />
Designated only for those students enrolled in the LEAD Program.<br />
EDUC 455 Clinical Practicum in 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Reading<br />
Application of previous courses, including supervised<br />
assessment/intervention reading work with individuals in need of<br />
special reading instruction. Case studies are included. Students must<br />
arrange to work with individuals with special reading instruction<br />
needs. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Completion of all<br />
other reading courses required. Offered every semester.<br />
EDUC 463 Multi-Age Professionalism 3 sem. hrs.<br />
in Practice: Pre-Student Teaching<br />
Course involves models of teaching, lesson planning, classroom<br />
management, and provisions for dealing with individual differences<br />
among students. Also, students work with subject-area professors<br />
for specific subject content. (Course requires field experiences<br />
in classroom where student teaching will be performed. All<br />
coursework and the appropriate Praxis II content test(s) must be<br />
successfully completed in order for student teaching to occur the<br />
following semester.) Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />
EDUC 464 Academic Content 3 sem. hrs.<br />
Standards: Exploration & Application<br />
The course provides a focus of study for support in understanding<br />
and mastering the knowledge, skills, & dispositions necessary for<br />
taking Praxis II content area assessments. By recommendation only.<br />

Teaching Seminar<br />
This capstone seminar accompanies the clinical practice and serves<br />
as the Heritage III requirement for Education students. The seminar<br />
provides for the integration of experience in the liberal arts tradition<br />
which enables students to respond to the contemporary challenges of<br />
the 21st century posed by the teaching profession today.<br />
Prerequisites: all coursework leading to Multi-Age licensure. Course<br />
