ECE 210 Early Childhood Education: 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Introduction<br />

Examination of theories in child development which have special relevance<br />

to understanding and meeting needs of infants, toddlers,<br />

preschoolers, early and late primary children. Appraisal of personal<br />

philosophy, preschool visitations, quality early childhood education<br />

programs and practices. Field experience required. Prerequisites:<br />

EDU 1<strong>07</strong> and sophomore standing. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 211 Early Childhood Education: 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Assessment, Growth and Development<br />

Evaluation of physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth and<br />

development of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, early and late primary<br />

children. Basic principles for working with special-needs children.<br />

Developmentally appropriate practices are identified. Field<br />

experience required. Prerequisites: EDU 1<strong>07</strong> and sophomore standing.<br />

Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 213 Early Childhood Education 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Psychology<br />

Learning theories and instructional models are examined from a<br />

practical classroom-based perspective. Emphasis is on interpreting<br />

and integrating educational concepts to address various learning situations<br />

in the early childhood classroom setting. Cognitive, social,<br />

and personal development are included as are concepts of motivation,<br />

instructional design and approaches, individual learning style<br />

and needs, and classroom decision-making processes. Prerequisites:<br />

EDU 1<strong>07</strong> and sophomore standing. Offered every semester.<br />

Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program required prior<br />

to enrollment in 300-/400-level education courses.<br />

ECE 313 Early Childhood Language 4 sem. hrs.<br />

Arts Studies Methods<br />

Pre-service teachers will learn various instructional delivery strategies.<br />

The social studies curriculum will be explored. Literacy methods and<br />

materials for reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are shared.<br />

Peer teaching strengthens the student's knowledge, skills and performance.<br />

Planning and the implementation of integrative activities are<br />

stressed; adaptive lesson planning is investigated. Prerequisite: ECE<br />

210 and ECE 211. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 315 Early Childhood 4 sem. hrs.<br />

Mathematics and Science Methods<br />

Course shows how to teach early childhood mathematics and science<br />

and takes the pre-service teacher through the learning-discovery<br />

process of the subject matter to be taught. Developmentally appropriate<br />

lesson planning is based on knowledge of individual children, the<br />

community, and curriculum goals and content. Prerequisites: ECE<br />

210 & 211. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 316 Early Childhood Education: 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Teaching, Learning & Organizing<br />

The incorporation of the knowledge and understanding of child<br />

development with concepts from the academic disciplines. Course<br />

examines resources for planning creative experiences for young children;<br />

relationships between materials and total learning environment;<br />

and techniques for helping children with special needs. Basic principles<br />

of administration, organization, and operation of early childhood<br />

quality programs. Prerequisites: ECE 210 and 211. Offered fall and<br />

spring semesters.<br />

ECE 318 Early Childhood Integrated 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Arts Methods<br />

Focus on development of children's aesthetic experiences through<br />

the design, extension and application of the creative arts. Teaching<br />

techniques and ways to use creative activities in music, visual art,<br />

movement and drama are investigated. A variety of materials and<br />

media are demonstrated to alert the preservice teacher to the ways to<br />

elicit and nourish creativity in children ages three through eight.<br />

Field experience required. Prerequisites: ECE 210 & 211. Offered<br />

fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 319 Early Childhood Education: 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Curriculum & Intervention Strategies<br />

(Moderate/Intensive)<br />

Study of curriculum development and intervention practices for<br />

young children with moderate-intensive disabilities. Course emphasizes<br />

collaborative partnership of professional disciplines and the<br />

child's family, in planning and implementing curricula and interventions.<br />

Course presents curriculum models and intervention methodologies<br />

based on developmentally and individually appropriate practices<br />

for the young child. Field experience required. Offered every<br />

spring semester.<br />

ECE 410 Early Childhood: 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Professionalism in Practice,<br />

Pre-Student Teaching<br />

Seminar and guided practice experience directly prior to student<br />

teaching semester. Concepts and practice in collaboration with family,<br />

professionals, and community members, inclusionary issues, team<br />

teaching. Course includes dialogue and planning activities with peers<br />

from general education for children with and without special needs.<br />

Field experience, on-site in university after-school programs and offsite<br />

in subsequent student teaching setting with weekly meetings.<br />

Course is to be taken the semester directly prior to student teaching,<br />

may be taken concurrently with 300-400 level courses. All coursework<br />

and the appropriate Praxis II content test(s) must be successfully<br />

completed in order for student teaching to occur the following<br />

semester. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 411 Early Childhood Student 9 sem. hrs.<br />

Teaching<br />

Theory is implemented along with actual teaching in two early childhood<br />

settings. Skills in methods, procedures, and techniques are<br />

developed. Individual and group conferences are held with the<br />

<strong>University</strong>'s supervisor of student teaching and with cooperating<br />

teachers. Prerequisite: all coursework leading to ECE Licensure.<br />

Taken currently with ECE 412. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ECE 412 Early Childhood Teaching 3 sem. hrs.<br />

Seminar<br />

This capstone seminar accompanies the clinical practice and<br />

serves as the Heritage III requirement for Education students. The<br />

seminar provides for the integration of experience in the liberal<br />

arts tradition which enables students to respond to the contemporary<br />

challenges of the 21st century posed by the teaching profession<br />

today. Prerequisites: all coursework leading to Early<br />

Childhood licensure. Course to be taken concurrently with student<br />

teaching (ECE 411). Offered fall and spring semesters.
