STUDENT LIFE AND SERVICES
A college education consists of much more than classroom work. Walsh University’s goal is to help each student grow in knowledge,
wisdom, and virtue.
The University offers a comprehensive program of services designed to enhance each student’s ability to function as a responsible
member of the Walsh community and society. Coordination of services and activities is provided principally through the
Department of Student Affairs.
THE TOTAL ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE
The transition from home and high school to college and into a career can be an exciting time of challenge and change. Getting
started on the right track toward finding, starting, and completing a degree program at Walsh University is an important first step.
Walsh University designed the Total Orientation Experience with the goal of getting students headed in the direction of academic,
career, and personal success.
The Total Orientation Experience is one more way that Walsh University shows its commitment and dedication to student success.
More than a summer session and a weekend orientation, the Total Orientation Experience includes an extended orientation seminar
covering the first important weeks of college life. The Total Orientation Experience encourages students to understand themselves
and others, and ultimately to succeed at Walsh University.
The Summer Orientation Sessions (for parents and students) mark the beginning of Walsh University's distinctive orientation program.
This two day program is designed to assist both incoming students and their parents with the transition to the Walsh
University community. Students meet other First Year Students, interact with faculty and staff members who will be integral to
their university career, participate in English, math and foreign language placement testing, and learn about how to prepare for the
upcoming academic year. This program also providess the opportunity for parents to attend entertaining and educational sessions
specifically designed to meet their unique needs and interests, including direct meetings with University departments to answer
questions, and the “Letting Go” program which is designed to help parents with the transition of sending their child off to college.
Additional joint parent-student sessions are presented to encourage specific conversations before their first year of college begins.
During Orientation Weekend (the weekend before classes begin in August) students are introduced to the First Year Institute, a
series of small group meetings led by a specifically trained and selected instructor. Starting with the weekend orientation, the
First Year Institute continues to meet weekly during the first part of the first semester. Seminar meetings are scheduled to accommodate
a variety of schedules.
First Year Institute meetings are opportunities for real-life, hands-on discussions with an instructor. Typically, discussion and activities
center on such topics as college survival skills, diversity, responsible decision-making, career development, academic support
systems, justice and peace issues, and healthy relationships.
All first-year, traditional-aged students are required to successfully complete the Total Orientation Experience (Orientation
Weekend and First Year Institute). Students unable to satisfactorily complete the Total Orientation Experience must complete an
appropriate amount of community service before they may graduate.
