The valleys have a strong Mediterranean<strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>and</strong> Macedonia has a very high level of local <strong>and</strong> Balkanendemic species, <strong>and</strong> relict species <strong>in</strong> the mounta<strong>in</strong>s, forest <strong>and</strong>“steppes” of the lowl<strong>and</strong>s.
