Section 5WOJCIECH PAULMethodology summaryCriteria lists: Poland’s criterion A list for threatened species covers a wide range fromglobally to regionally and nationally threatened. The IPA project also provided animpetus to update national red lists and checklists.The Criterion C list for Poland alsocontains a high number of priority threatened habitats.Data and fieldwork: much of the IPA selection was based on existing data with someadditional fieldwork to verify and/or supplement the necessary IPA information.Site selection: potential IPAs were identified from national and landscape parks, thepreliminary Natura 2000 list, and other sites nominated by specialists.These sites werechecked using the IPA criteria and the results reviewed by consultation with regionaladvisors and non-vascular plant and fungi specialists.The national site selection strategyfocussed on a range of site sizes from thousands of hectares to single hectaresdepending on the qualifying features and ecological context. Special attention has beenpaid to the botanically important sites proposed for the NATURA 2000 network, thatwere not included in the official list presented to the EU. More potential IPAs will beinvestigated during the planned continuation of the network.Dolina Biebrzy (Biebrza River Valley)IPAThe Biebrza IPA, as the largest lowlandriver valley preserved in an almost naturalstate in western and central Europe, iswidely acknowledged for its unique valueas a habitat complex for many plants andanimal species.Among the mosaic of bog,fen and wet forest communites there arefifteen priority threatened habitats fromthe Habitats Directive, and this area is therichest site in the whole country forspecies such as Cypripedium calceolus.The picture shows Cochleria polonica, aglobally threatened species.Key issues: Criterion B application evidently needs more analyses and a multi-facetedapproach. Red list ofthreatened algae in Poland.Major habitats at IPAs in PolandForest is the most widespread of habitats at IPAs, occurring at ninety-eight IPAs (84%),(deciduous 95, coniferous 75 IPAs, mixed 49 IPAs). Grassland is also a major habitat typeat 93 IPAs (80%) (wet 63 IPAs, mesic 56 IPAs, dry 31 IPAs, alpine and subalpine 8).Cultivated and constructed habitats occur at a low level of many IPAs.Wetland habitatsoccur at almost two thirds of IPAs (sedge/reed beds 38, valley mires/fens 35, base richfens 29, bogs 17). Inland water occurs at 51% of IPAs.Temperate heath and alpine scrub,screes and rock habitats, coastal dunes and marine habitats also occur at IPAs.Agriculture occurs at 67% of IPAs (arable 54, mixed 52, animals/grazing 41).
