Pol<strong>and</strong>Pol<strong>and</strong>By Zbigniew MirekPol<strong>and</strong> covers an area of over 312,000 km 2 <strong>in</strong> Central Europe<strong>and</strong> has two biogeographical zones: the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental, whichcovers most of the country <strong>and</strong> a small area of the Alp<strong>in</strong>e zone<strong>in</strong> the Carparthian Mounta<strong>in</strong>s of the south. Pol<strong>and</strong>’s natural <strong>and</strong>semi-natural habitats consist ma<strong>in</strong>ly of several types of forest,mown or grazed grassl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g small <strong>areas</strong> of warm, dry,steppe-like grassl<strong>and</strong>, as well as vast <strong>areas</strong> of swamps <strong>and</strong> peatbogs.The country also harbours two Centres of Plant Diversity,the Carpathians <strong>and</strong> the Bial ⁄ owiez·a Forest.
