˘˘``Section 5DANA TURONOVAKrkonos˘e IPA (Giant Mountains).The highest Czech Mountains (up to 1,602 m) bear the impacts of Pleistocene glaciationand host interesting sub-alpine and alpine plant communities, glacial relicts (Rubuschamaemorus), and local endemics (Campanula bohemica, Pedicularis sudetica, Sorbussudetica).Their isolated mountain tundra formations qualify them as ‘an Arctic island incentral Europe’.This was the first national park in the Czech Republic (established in1963), and includes the very valuable, coherent, upper zones of sub-alpine and alpinevegetation, peat-bogs, dwarf pine stands, mountain meadows and adjacent montanespruce and mixed forests.DANA TURONOVAPavlovské vrchy IPA (Pavlov Hills)This site is an upland area of steep rocky limestone hills dominating the South-Moravianlandscape (up to 550 m). Here, in the Pannonic zone and in the warmest region of theCzech Republic, rich plant communities of rock steppes, dry grasslands, forest steppesand thermophilous oakwoods have developed and been preserved.The flora containsmany relict species as well as species on the boundaries of their geographical range.Thesite contains the Criterion A species Iris humilis subsp. arenaria, Dianthus lumnitzeri, andPulsatilla grandis (shown above).42
